Mattheum 20

1 Simile est regnum caelorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam.

FOR the kingdom of heaven is like a man, the master of a family, who went out at break of day, to hire labourers into his vineyard.

2 Conventione autem facta cum operariis ex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.

And when he had agreed with the labourers at a denarius a day, he sent them into the vineyard.

3 Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos,

And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market place unemployed.

4 et dixit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam, et quod iustum fuerit dabo vobis.

And he said to them, Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatever is equitable, I will give it you. So they went.

5 Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiit circa sextam et nonam horam: et fecit similiter.

Again going out, about the sixth and ninth hour, he did after the same manner.

6 Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis: Quid hic statis tota die otiosi?

But about the eleventh hour, going out, he found others standing unemployed, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

7 Dicunt ei: Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam.

They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is equitable, ye shall receive.

8 Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineae procuratori suo: Voca operarios, et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos.

Now when the evening came, the master of the vineyard said to his overseer, Call the labourers, and give them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.

9 Cum venissent ergo qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulos denarios.

And when they came, who began about the eleventh hour, they received each a denarius.

10 Venientes autem et primi, arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi: acceperunt autem et ipsi singulos denarios.

But when the first came, they expected that they should receive more; and they also received every man a denarius.

11 Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias,

But when they received it, they murmured against the master of the family:

12 dicentes: Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, et pares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei, et aestus.

saying, These last have wrought only a single hour, and thou hast put them on an equality with us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day.

13 At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit: Amice non facio tibi iniuriam: nonne ex denario convenisti mecum?

But he answering, said to one of them, Friend, I do thee no injustice; did I not agree with thee for a denarius?

14 Tolle quod tuum est, et vade: volo autem et huic novissimo dare sicut et tibi.

Take then thine own, and begone: I chuse to give to this last even as to thee.

15 Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere? an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?

Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

16 Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.

Thus shall the last be first, and the first last; for many are called, but the elect are few.

17 Et ascendens Iesus Ierosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis:

And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took his twelve disciples aside on the road, and said to them;

18 Ecce ascendimus Ierosolymam, et filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et Scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte,

Lo! we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests and scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,

19 et tradent eum Gentibus ad illudendum, et flagellandum, et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget.

and shall deliver him to the Gentiles, to insult, and to scourge, and to crucify: and the third day he shall rise again.

20 Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedaei cum filiis suis, adorans et petens aliquid ab eo.

Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children, with her sons, paying him obeisance, and petitioning a favour of him.

21 Qui dixit ei: Quid vis? Ait illi: Dic ut sedeant hi duo filii mei, unus ad dexteram tuam, et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo.

Then he said to her, What is thy wish? She saith unto him, Tell me that these my two sons shall sit, the one at thy right hand, and the other at thy left, in thy kingdom.

22 Respondens autem Iesus, dixit: Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei: Possumus.

Then Jesus answering said, Ye know not what ye ask. Can ye drink of the cup that I am going to drink, and be baptised with the baptism with which I am baptised? They say unto him, We are able.

23 Ait illis: Calicem quidem meum bibetis: sedere autem ad dexteram meam vel sinistram non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo.

And he saith unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of my cup, and with the baptism with which I am baptised, shall ye be baptised; but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, it is not in my power to bestow, but on those, for whom it was prepared by my Father.

24 Et audientes decem, indignati sunt de duobus fratribus.

And the twelve, on hearing this, were filled with indignation against the two brethren.

25 Iesus autem vocavit eos ad se, et ait: Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum: et qui maiores sunt, potestatem exercent in eos.

But Jesus, calling them to him, said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority among them.

26 Non ita erit inter vos: sed quicumque voluerit inter vos maior fieri, sit vester minister:

But thus shall it not be with you. But whosoever will be a great man among you, let him be your servant;

27 et qui voluerit inter vos primus esse, erit vester servus.

and whosoever will be first, let him be your slave.

28 sicut filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam, in redemptionem pro multis.

Even as the Son of man came not to be waited upon, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

29 Et egredientibus illis ab Iericho, secuta est eum turba multa,

And as they were going out of Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

30 et ecce duo caeci sedentes secus viam, audierunt, quia Iesus transiret: et clamaverunt, dicentes: Domine miserere nostri, fili David.

And, behold, two blind men sat by the road side, who hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, son of David!

31 Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent. At illi magis clamabant, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

And the multitude checked them, that they should be silent; but they cried out the more, Have mercy on us, Lord, son of David.

32 Et stetit Iesus, et vocavit eos, et ait: Quid vultis ut faciam vobis?

And Jesus standing called them, and said, What desire ye, that I should do for you?

33 Dicunt illi: Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri.

They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.

34 Misertus autem eorum Iesus, tetigit oculos eorum. Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum.

Then Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes recovered sight, and they followed him.
