Mattheum 17
1 Et post dies sex assumpsit Iesus Petrum, et Iacobum, et Ioannem fratrem eius, et duxit illos in montem excelsum seorsum:
Six days later Jesus took with him Peter and Jamesand his brother John, and led them up a high mountain, by themselves apart.
2 et transfiguratus est ante eos. Et resplenduit facies eius sicut sol: vestimenta autem eius facta sunt alba sicut nix.
Here he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.
3 Et ecce apparuerunt illis Moyses, et Elias cum eo loquentes.
And behold! Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus.
4 Respondens autem Petrus, dixit ad Iesum: Domine, bonum est nos hic esse: si vis, faciamus tria tabernacula, tibi unum, Moysi unum, et Eliae unum.
Then Peter said to Jesus. "Master, it is good that we are here! If you are willing I will make here three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
5 Adhuc eo loquente, ecce nubes lucida obumbravit eos. Et ecce vox de nube, dicens: Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi bene complacui: ipsum audite.
While he was yet speaking, behold! a luminous cloud overshadowed them; and a voice out of the cloud, saying. "This is my Son, my Beloved, in whom is my delight. Listen to him."
6 Et audientes discipuli ceciderunt in faciem suam, et timuerunt valde.
When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
7 Et accessit Iesus, et tetigit eos: dixitque eis: Surgite, et nolite timere.
But Jesus came to them and touched them, saying, "Rise, have no fear!"
8 Levantes autem oculos suos, neminem viderunt, nisi solum Iesum.
And when they raised their eyes they saw no one save Jesus only.
9 Et descendentibus illis de monte, praecepit eis Iesus, dicens: Nemini dixeritis visionem, donec Filius hominis a mortuis resurgat.
While they were going down from the mountain, Jesus laid a command on them. "Speak to no man about the vision," he said, "until after the Son of man has been raised from the dead."
10 Et interrogaverunt eum discipuli, dicentes: Quid ergo scribae dicunt quod Eliam oporteat primum venire?
And his disciples asked him, saying, "Why then do the Scribes say that Elijah must first come?"
11 At ille respondens, ait eis: Elias quidem venturus est, et restituet omnia.
And he answered. "Elijah is coming, and will restore all things.
12 dico autem vobis, quia Elias iam venit, et non cognoverunt eum, sed fecerunt in eo quaecumque voluerunt. Sic et Filius hominis passurus est ab eis.
"Nay, I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they chose. Even so the Son of man also is about to suffer at their hands."
13 Tunc intellexerunt discipuli, quia de Ioanne Baptista dixisset eis.
Then the disciples divined that he had been speaking to them about John, the Baptist.
14 Et cum venisset ad turbam, accessit ad eum homo genibus provolutus ante eum, dicens:
As they reached the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, and fell on his knees before him, saying.
15 Domine, miserere filio meo, quia lunaticus est, et male patitur: nam saepe cadit in ignem, et crebro in aquam.
"Master, take pity on my son, for he is an epileptic and sore distressed. Often he falls into the fire and often into the water.
16 et obtuli eum discipulis tuis, et non potuerunt curare eum.
"And I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him."
17 Respondens autem Iesus, ait: O generatio incredula, et perversa, quousque ero vobiscum? usquequo patiar vos? Afferte huc illum ad me.
In reply Jesus said. "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I endure you? Bring him here to me!"
18 Et increpavit illum Iesus, et exiit ab eo daemonium, et curatus est puer ex illa hora.
Then Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, and it came out of him; and the boy was cured from that very hour.
19 Tunc accesserunt discipuli ad Iesum secreto, et dixerunt: Quare nos non potuimus eiicere illum?
Thereupon Jesus’ disciples came to him and asked him privately, "Why were we not able to cast it out?"
20 Dixit illis Iesus: Propter incredulitatem vestram. Amen quippe dico vobis, si habueritis fidem, sicut granum sinapis, dicetis monti huic, Transi hinc, et transibit, et nihil impossibile erit vobis.
"Because of your little faith," he answered. "In solemn truth I tell you that if you have faith the size of a mustard-seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from this place to that!’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
21 Hoc autem genus non eiicitur nisi per orationem, et ieiunium.
"But this kind is driven out by prayer alone."
22 Conversantibus autem eis in Galilaea, dixit illis Iesus: Filius hominis tradendus est in manus hominum:
As they continued going from place to place in Galilee, Jesus said to them. "The Son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men;
23 et occident eum, et tertia die resurget. Et contristati sunt vehementer.
"and they will kill him, but on the third day he will rise again." And they were greatly grieved.
24 Et cum venissent Capharnaum, accesserunt qui didrachma accipiebant, ad Petrum, et dixerunt ei: Magister vester non solvit didrachma?
As they came into Capernaum the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked, "Does not your Teacher pay the temple tax?"
25 Ait: Etiam. Et cum intrasset in domum, praevenit eum Iesus, dicens: Quid tibi videtur Simon? Reges terrae a quibus accipiunt tributum vel censum? a filiis suis, an ab alienis?
"Indeed he does," answered Peter. But on Peter’s entering the house, Jesus forestalled him, saying. "How does it seem to you, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect customs or taxes-from their own people, or from aliens?"
26 Et ille dixit: Ab alienis. Dixit illi Iesus: Ergo liberi sunt filii.
And when he replied, "From aliens," Jesus said. "Then their people go free.
27 Ut autem non scandalizemus eos, vade ad mare, et mitte hamum: et eum piscem, qui primus ascenderit, tolle: et aperto ore eius, invenies staterem: illum sumens, da eis pro me, et te.
"Nevertheless, that we may not give offense, go to the seaside, throw in your hook; take the first fish that rises, and when you have opened its mouth, you will find a shekel in it. Take it and give it to them for us both."
