1 Factum est autem in sabbato secundo primo, cum transiret per sata, vellebant discipuli eius spicas, et manducabant confricantes manibus.
It happened that on a Sabbath he was going through the wheat-fields. His disciples were picking the ears and eating the wheat, rubbing it out with their hands.
2 Quidam autem Pharisaeorum, dicebant illis: Quid facitis quod non licet in sabbatis?
And some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what it is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?"
3 Et respondens Iesus ad eos, dixit: Nec hoc legistis quod fecit David, cum esurisset ipse, et qui cum illo erant?
"Have you never read," answered Jesus, "what David did when he and his followers were hungry?
4 quomodo intravit in domum Dei, et panes propositionis sumpsit, et manducavit, et dedit his, qui cum ipso erant: quos non licet manducare nisi tantum sacerdotibus?
"How he entered into God’s house and took and ate the Presented Loaves, and gave some to his followers, loaves which none must eat but the priests?
5 Et dicebat illis: Quia Dominus est Filius hominis, etiam sabbati.
"THE SON OF MAN," he told them, "IS LORD EVEN OVER THE SABBATH."
6 Factum est autem in alio sabbato, ut intraret in synagogam, et doceret. Et erat ibi homo, et manus eius dextra erat arida.
On another Sabbath he went into a synagogue and was teaching; and there was there a man whose right hand was withered.
7 Observabant autem Scribae, et Pharisaei si in sabbato curaret: ut invenirent unde accusarent eum.
Now the Scribes and Pharisees kept watching to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might be able to bring on accusations to him.
8 Ipse vero sciebat cogitationes eorum: et ait homini, qui habebat manum aridam: Surge, et sta in medium. Et surgens stetit.
He was all along aware of their thoughts; and he said to the man with the withered hand, "Rise, and stand there in the midst."
9 Ait autem ad illos Iesus: Interrogo vos si licet sabbatis benefacere, an male: animam salvam facere, an perdere?
So he rose and stood. Then Jesus said to them. "I ask you whether it is lawful on the Sabbath Day to do good or to do harm? To save a life or to destroy it?"
10 Et circumspectis omnibus dixit homini: Extende manum tuam. Et extendit: et restituta est manus eius.
Then he looked round about on them in anger, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand!"
11 Ipsi autem repleti sunt insipientia, et colloquebantur ad invicem, quidnam facerent de Iesu.
He did so; and his hand was restored. But they were filled with fury, and they began to talk over together what they could do to Jesus.
12 Factum est autem in illis diebus, exiit in montem orare, et erat pernoctans in oratione Dei.
It happened about that time that he went out into the mountain to pray. He continued all night in prayer to God.
13 Et cum dies factus esset, vocavit discipulos suos: et elegit duodecim ex ipsis (quos et Apostolos nominavit)
And when day dawned he called his disciples, and from among them he selected twelve, whom also he called Apostles missionaries.
14 Simonem, quem cognominavit Petrum, et Andream fratrem eius, Iacobum, et Ioannem, Philippum, et Bartholomaeum,
They were Simon, whom he had also called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John;
15 Matthaeum, et Thomam, Iacobum Alphaei, et Simonem, qui vocatur zelotes,
Philip and Bartholomew; Mathew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot;
16 et Iudam Iacobi, et Iudam Iscariotem, qui fuit proditor.
Jude the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who was the traitor.
17 Et descendens cum illis, stetit in loco campestri, et turba discipulorum eius, et multitudo copiosa plebis ab omni Iudaea, et Ierusalem, et maritima, et Tyri, et Sidonis,
With these he came down till he reached a level place, where there was a great crowd of his disciples and a great many people from all Judea and Jerusalem and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. These came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases.
18 qui venerant ut audirent eum, et sanarentur a languoribus suis. Et qui vexabantur a spiritibus immundis, curabantur.
Those who were tormented by unclean spirits were healed also.
19 Et omnis turba quaerebat eum tangere: quia virtus de illo exibat, et sanabat omnes.
The whole crowd were trying to touch him, because power emanated from him and cured them all.
20 Et ipse elevatis oculis in discipulis suis, dicebat: Beati pauperes: quia vestrum est regnum Dei.
Then raising his eyes upon his disciples he began to say to them. "Blessed are you poor, For the kingdom of God is yours.
21 Beati, qui nunc esuritis: quia saturabimini. Beati, qui nunc fletis: quia ridebitis.
"Blessed are you who are hungry now, For you shall be filled. "Blessed are you who are wailing now, For you shall laugh.
22 Beati eritis cum vos oderint homines, et cum separaverint vos, et exprobraverint, et eiicerint nomen vestrum tamquam malum propter Filium hominis.
"Blessed are you when men shall hate you, And excommunicate you and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil because of the Son of man.
23 Gaudete in illa die, et exultate: ecce enim merces vestra multa est in caelo: secundum haec enim faciebant Prophetis patres eorum.
"Rejoice in that day and exult, For your reward is great in heaven; For even so did their fathers to the prophets.
24 Verumtamen vae vobis divitibus, qui habetis consolationem vestram.
"But woe to you rich! For you already have received your consolation.
25 Vae vobis, qui saturati estis: quia esurietis. Vae vobis, qui ridetis nunc: quia lugebitis et flebitis.
"Woe unto you who are full now! For you shall suffer hunger. "Woe to you who are laughing now! For you shall wail and weep.
26 Vae cum benedixerint vobis omnes homines: secundum haec enim faciebant pseudoprophetis patres eorum.
"Woe to you when all men shall speak well of you! For even so did their fathers to the false prophets.
27 Sed vobis dico, qui auditis: Diligite inimicos vestros, benefacite his, qui oderunt vos.
"But to you who are listening to me I say, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28 Benedicite maledicentibus vobis, et orate pro calumniantibus vos.
Bless those who curse you, pray for those who calumniate you.
29 Et qui te percutit in maxillam unam, praebe illi et alteram. Et ab eo, qui aufert tibi vestimentum, etiam tunicam noli prohibere.
To him who gives you a blow on the jaw Turn the other jaw also; And from him who is robbing you of your cloak Withhold not your coat also.
30 Omni autem petenti te, tribue: et qui aufert quae tua sunt, ne repetas.
Give to every one who asks you; And do not demand your goods back from him who is taking them away.
31 Et prout vultis ut faciant vobis homines, et vos facite illis similiter.
And as you would like men to do to you, So do you also to them.
32 Et si diligitis eos, qui vos diligunt, quae vobis est gratia? nam et peccatores diligentes se diligunt.
"If you love those who love you what credit is it to you? Why even sinners love those who love them.
33 Et si benefeceritis his, qui vobis benefaciunt; quae vobis est gratia? siquidem et peccatores hoc faciunt.
"And if you are kind to those who are kind to you, what credit is it to you? Even sinners do the same.
34 Et si mutuum dederitis his, a quibus speratis recipere; quae gratia est vobis? nam et peccatores peccatoribus foenerantur, ut recipiant aequalia.
"And if you lend to those from whom you are hoping to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, so as to get as much back.
35 Verumtamen diligite inimicos vestros: benefacite, et mutuum date, nihil inde sperantes: et erit merces vestra multa, et eritis filii Altissimi, quia ipse benignus est super ingratos et malos.
"But you must love even your enemies and be kind to them, And lend, despairing of no man. Then your reward will be great, And you will be the sons of the Most High; For he is kind even to the ungrateful and to the evil.
36 Estote ergo misericordes sicut et Pater vester misericors est.
"Do you therefore be merciful, As your Father is merciful.
37 Nolite iudicare, et non iudicabimini: nolite condemnare, et non condemnabimini. Dimitte, et dimittemini.
"Do not judge, and you shall not be judged; Do not condemn, and you shall not be condemned;
38 Date, et dabitur vobis: mensuram bonam, et confertam, et coagitatam, et supereffluentem dabunt in sinum vestrum. Eadem quippe mensura, qua mensi fueritis, remetietur vobis.
"Pardon, and you shall be pardoned; Give, and gifts shall be given to you; Full measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they shall pour into your bosom. For with what measure you measure, they will measure back to you."
39 Dicebat autem illis et similitudinem: Numquid potest caecus caecum ducere? nonne ambo in foveam cadunt?
He also told them a parable. "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
40 Non est discipulus super magistrum: perfectus autem omnis erit, si sit sicut magister eius.
"There is no disciple who is above his master; But every one when he is completely trained will be like his master.
41 Quid autem vides festucam in oculo fratris tui, trabem autem, quae in oculo tuo est, non consideras?
"And why do you look at the splinter that is in your brother’s eye, but never consider the beam that is in your own eye?
42 Aut quomodo potes dicere fratri tuo: Frater sine eiiciam festucam de oculo tuo: ipse in oculo tuo trabem non videns? Hypocrita eiice primum trabem de oculo tuo: et tunc perspicies ut educas festucam de oculo fratris tui.
"Or how can you say to your brother. "Brother, allow me to pull that splinter out of your eye," when you do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite! Take out first the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the splinter from your brother’s eye.
43 Non est enim arbor bona, quae facit fructus malos: neque arbor mala, faciens fructum bonum.
"For there is not good tree which bears worthless fruit, nor again any worthless tree which bears good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit.
44 Unaquaeque enim arbor de fructu suo cognoscitur. Neque enim de spinis colligunt ficus: neque de rubo vindemiant uvam.
"You do not gather figs from thorns, and grapes are not plucked from a bramble-bush.
45 Bonus homo de bono thesauro cordis sui profert bonum: et malus homo de malo thesauro profert malum. Ex abundantia enim cordis os loquitur.
"The good man out of the good treasure-house of his heart brings forth good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure-house of his heart brings forth evil; for the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart.
46 Quid autem vocatis me Domine, Domine: et non facitis quae dico?
"And why are you calling me Lord, Lord, and not doing what I tell you?
47 Omnis, qui venit ad me, et audit sermones meos, et facit eos: ostendam vobis cui similis sit:
"I will show whom the man that comes to me, and listens to my works, and does them, is like.
48 similis est homini aedificanti domum, qui fodit in altum, et posuit fundamentum supra petram. inundatione autem facta, illisum est flumen domui illi, et non potuit eam movere: fundata enim erat supra petram.
"He is like a man who is building a house who digged and went deep and laid a foundation upon rock. And, when a flood came, the torrent dashed against that house, but could not move, because it had been founded upon rock.
49 Qui autem audit, et non facit: similis est homini aedificanti domum suam supra terram sine fundamento: in quam illisus est fluvius, et continuo cecidit: et facta est ruina domus illius magna.
"But he who listens but does not do, is like a man who built a house upon the soil, without foundations, against which the torrent burst, and at once it fell in, and the ruin of that house was great."
