Iosue 24
1 Congregavitque Iosue omnes tribus Israel in Sichem, et vocavit maiores natu, ac principes, et iudices, et magistros: steteruntque in conspectu Domini:
And Joshua gathered all the tribe of Israel to Selo, and convoked their elders, and their officers, and their judges, and set them before God.
2 et ad populum sic locutus est: Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel: Trans fluvium habitaverunt patres vestri ab initio, Thare pater Abraham, et Nachor: servieruntque diis alienis.
And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, Your fathers at first sojourned beyond the river, [even] Thara, the father of Abraam and the father of Nachor; and they served other gods.
3 Tuli ergo patrem vestrum Abraham de Mesopotamiae finibus: et adduxi eum in Terram Chanaan: multiplicavique semen eius,
And I took your father Abraam from the other side of the river, and I guided him through all the land, and I multiplied his seed;
4 et dedi ei Isaac: illique rursum dedi Iacob et Esau. E quibus, Esau dedi montem Seir ad possidendum: Iacob vero, et filii eius descenderunt in Aegyptum.
and I gave to him Isaac, and to Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave to Esau mount Seir for him to inherit: and Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt, and became there a great and populous and mighty nation: and the Egyptians afflicted them.
5 Misique Moysen et Aaron, et percussi Aegyptum multis signis atque portentis.
And I smote Egypt with the wonders that I wrought among them.
6 Eduxique vos et patres vestros de Aegypto, et venistis ad mare: persecutique sunt Aegyptii patres vestros cum curribus et equitatu, usque ad Mare rubrum.
And afterwards [God] brought out our fathers from Egypt, and ye entered into the Red Sea; and the Egyptians pursued after our fathers with chariots and horses into the Red Sea.
7 Clamaverunt autem ad Dominum filii Israel: qui posuit tenebras inter vos et Aegyptios, et adduxit super eos mare, et operuit eos. Viderunt oculi vestri cuncta quae in Aegypto fecerim, et habitastis in solitudine multo tempore:
And we cried aloud to the Lord; and he put a cloud and darkness between us and the Egyptians, and he brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in the land of Egypt; and ye were in the wilderness many days.
8 et introduxi vos in Terram Amorrhaei, qui habitabat trans Iordanem. Cumque pugnarent contra vos, tradidi eos in manus vestras, et possedistis Terram eorum, atque interfecistis eos.
And he brought us into the land of the Amorites that dwelt beyond Jordan, and the Lord delivered them into our hands; and ye inherited their land, and utterly destroyed them from before you.
9 Surrexit autem Balac filius Sephor rex Moab, et pugnavit contra Israelem. Misitque et vocavit Balaam filium Beor, ut malediceret vobis:
And Balac, king of Moab, son of Sepphor, rose up, and made war against Israel, and sent and called Balaam to curse us.
10 et ego nolui audire eum, sed econtrario per illum benedixi vobis, et liberavi vos de manu eius.
But the Lord thy God would not destroy thee; and he greatly blessed us, and rescued us out of their hands, and delivered them [to us].
11 Transistisque Iordanem, et venistis ad Iericho. Pugnaveruntque contra vos viri civitatis eius, Amorrhaeus, et Pherezaeus, et Chananaeus, et Hethaeus, et Gergezaeus, et Hevaeus, et Iebusaeus: et tradidi illos in manus vestras.
And ye crossed over Jordan, and came to Jericho; and the inhabitants of Jericho fought against us, the Amorite, and the Chananite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Chettite, and the Gergesite, and the Lord delivered them into our hands.
12 Misique ante vos crabrones: et eieci eos de locis suis, duos reges Amorrhaeorum, non in gladio nec in arcu tuo.
And he sent forth the hornet before you; and he drove them out from before you, [even] twelve kings of the Amorites, not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
13 Dedique vobis Terram, in qua non laborastis, et urbes quas non aedificastis, ut habitaretis in eis: vineas et oliveta, quae non plantastis.
And he gave you a land on which ye did not labour, and cities which ye did not build, and ye were settled in them; and ye eat [of] vineyards and oliveyards which ye did not plant.
14 Nunc ergo timete Dominum, et servite ei perfecto corde atque verissimo: et auferte deos, quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia et in Aegypto, ac servite Domino.
And now fear the Lord, and serve him in righteousness and justice; and remove the strange gods, which our fathers served beyond the river, and in Egypt; and serve the Lord.
15 Sin autem malum vobis videtur ut Domino serviatis, optio vobis datur: eligite hodie quod placet, cui servire potissimum debeatis, utrum diis, quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia, an diis Amorrhaeorum, in quorum Terra habitatis: ego autem et domus mea serviemus Domino.
But if it seem not good to you to serve the Lord, choose to yourselves this day whom ye will serve, whether the gods of your fathers that were on the other side of the river, or the gods of the Amorites, among whom ye dwell upon their land: but I and my house will serve the Lord, for he is holy.
16 Responditque populus, et ait: Absit a nobis ut relinquamus Dominum, et serviamus diis alienis.
And the people answered and said, Far be it from us to forsake the Lord, so as to serve other gods.
17 Dominus Deus noster ipse eduxit nos, et patres nostros de Terra Aegypti, de domo servitutis: fecitque videntibus nobis signa ingentia, et custodivit nos in omni via, per quam ambulavimus, et in cunctis populis, per quos transivimus.
The Lord our God, he is God; he brought up us and our fathers from Egypt, and kept us in all the way wherein we walked, and among all the nations through whom we passed.
18 Et eiecit universas gentes, Amorrhaeum habitatorem Terrae, quam nos intravimus. Serviemus igitur Domino, quia ipse est Deus noster.
And the Lord cast out the Amorite, and all the nations that inhabited the land from before us: yea, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God.
19 Dixitque Iosue ad populum: Non poteritis servire Domino: Deus enim sanctus, et fortis aemulator est, nec ignoscet sceleribus vestris atque peccatis.
And Joshua said to the people, Indeed ye will not be able to serve the Lord, for God is holy; and he being jealous will not forgive your sins and your transgressions.
20 Si dimiseritis Dominum, et servieritis diis alienis, convertet se, et affliget vos, atque subvertet postquam vobis praestiterit bona.
Whensoever ye shall forsake the Lord and serve other gods, then he shall come upon you and afflict you, and consume you, because he has done you good.
21 Dixitque populus ad Iosue: Nequaquam ita ut loqueris, erit, sed Domino serviemus.
And the people said to Joshua, Nay, but we will serve the Lord.
22 Et Iosue ad populum, Testes, inquit, vos estis, quia ipsi elegeritis vobis Dominum ut serviatis ei. Responderuntque: Testes.
And Joshua said to the people, Ye [are] witnesses against yourselves, that ye have chosen the Lord to serve him.
23 Nunc ergo, ait, auferte deos alienos de medio vestri, et inclinate corda vestra ad Dominum Deum Israel.
And now take away the strange gods that are among you, and set your heart right toward the Lord God of Israel.
24 Dixitque populus ad Iosue: Domino Deo nostro serviemus, et obedientes erimus praeceptis eius.
And the people said to Joshua, We will serve the Lord, and we will hearken to his voice.
25 Percussit ergo Iosue in die illo foedus, et proposuit populo praecepta atque iudicia in Sichem.
So Joshua made a covenant with the people on that day, and gave them a law and an ordinance in Selo before the tabernacle of the God of Israel.
26 Scripsit quoque omnia verba haec in volumine legis Domini: et tulit lapidem pergrandem, posuitque eum subter quercum, quae erat in Sanctuario Domini:
And he wrote these words in the book of the laws of God: and Joshua took a great stone, and set it up under the oak before the Lord.
27 et dixit ad omnem populum: En lapis iste erit vobis in testimonium quod audieritis omnia verba Domini, quae locutus est vobis: ne forte postea negare velitis, et mentiri Domino Deo vestro.
And Joshua said to the people, Behold, this stone shall be among you for a witness, for it has heard all the words that have been spoken to it by the Lord; for he has spoken to you this day; and this [stone] shall be among you for a witness in the last days, whenever ye shall deal falsely with the Lord my God.
28 Dimisitque populum, singulos in possessionem suam.
And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his place.
29 Et post haec mortuus est Iosue filius Nun servus Domini, centum et decem annorum:
And it came to pass after these things that Joshua the son of Naue the servant of the Lord died, [at the age] of a hundred and ten years.
30 sepelieruntque eum in finibus possessionis suae in Thamnathsare, quae est sita in monte Ephraim, a Septentrionali parte montis Gaas.
And they buried him by the borders of his inheritance in Thamnasarach in the mount of Ephraim, northward of the mount of Galaad.
31 Servivitque Israel Domino cunctis diebus Iosue et seniorum, qui longo vixerunt tempore post Iosue, et qui noverunt omnia opera Domini quae fecerat in Israel.
And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived as long as Joshua, and all that knew all the works of the Lord which he wrought for Israel.
32 Ossa quoque Ioseph, quae tulerant filii Israel de Aegypto, sepelierunt in Sichem, in parte agri, quem emerat Iacob a filiis Hemor patris Sichem, centum novellis ovibus, et fuit in possessionem filiorum Ioseph.
And the children of Israel brought up the bones of Joseph out of Egypt, and buried [them] in Sicima, in the portion of the land which Jacob bought of the Amorites who dwelt in Sicima for a hundred ewe-lambs; and he gave it to Joseph for a portion.
33 Eleazar quoque filius Aaron mortuus est: et sepelierunt eum in Gabaath Phinees filii eius, quae data est ei in monte Ephraim.
And it came to pass afterwards that Eleazar the high-priest the son of Aaron died, and was buried in Gabaar of Phinees his son, which he gave him in mount Ephraim.
