1 Et egressa est sors secunda filiorum Simeon per cognationes suas: fuitque hereditas
The second/next tribe that was allotted land was the tribe of Simeon. Each clan in that tribe was allotted some land that was inside the area that had been allotted to the tribe of Judah.
2 eorum in medio possessionis filiorum Iuda: Bersabee et Sabee et Molada
Their land included the towns of Beersheba ([which is also named] Sheba), Moladah,
3 et Hasersual, Bala et Asem
Hazar-Shual, Balah, Ezem,
4 et Eltholad, Bethul et Harma
Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah,
5 et Siceleg et Bethmarchaboth et Hasersusa
Ziklag, Beth-Marcaboth. Hazar-Susah,
6 et Bethlebaoth et Sarohen: civitates tredecim, et villae earum.
Beth-Lebaoth, and Sharuhen. Altogether there were 13 towns and the surrounding villages.
7 Ain et Remmon et Athar et Asan: civitates quattuor, et villae earum:
The land allotted to them also included the four cities of Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan, and their surrounding villages.
8 omnes viculi per circuitum urbium istarum usque ad Baalath Beer Ramath contra australem plagam. Haec est hereditas filiorum Simeon iuxta cognationes suas,
They were also allotted some very small villages in an area that extended south to Baalath-Beer (which is [also named] Ramah, in the southern desert). That was the land allotted to the clans of the tribe of Simeon.
9 in possessione et funiculo filiorum Iuda: quia maior erat. et idcirco filii Simeon possederunt in medio hereditatis eorum.
The tribe of Judah had been allotted much more land than they needed, so part of their land was given to the tribe of Simeon.
10 Ceciditque sors tertia filiorum Zabulon per cognationes suas: factus est terminus possessionis eorum usque Sarid.
The third/next tribe that was allotted land was the tribe of Zebulun. Each clan of that tribe was allotted some of the land. The southern border started at Sarid [city].
11 Ascenditque de Mari et Medalaa, et pervenit in Debbaseth, usque ad torrentem qui est contra Ieconam.
It extended west to Maralah [city] and on to Dabbesheth [city], and on to the brook just north of Jokneam [city].
12 Et revertitur de Sared contra Orientem in fines Ceseleththabor: et egreditur ad Dabereth, ascenditque contra Iaphie.
The border extended east from Sarid to the area near Kisloth-Tabor [city] and on to Daberath [town] and on to Japhia [town].
13 Et inde pertransit usque ad orientalem plagam Gethhepher et Thacasin: et egreditur in Remmon, Amthar et Noa.
From there it extended east to Gath-Hepher [city] and Eth-Kazin [town], and north to Rimmon [city]. From there the border extended [west] to Neah [town].
14 Et circuit ad Aquilonem Hanathon: suntque egressus eius Vallis Iephthael,
From Neah it extended south to Hannathon [city] and from there to Iphtah-El Valley.
15 et Cateth et Naalol et Semeron et Iedala et Bethlehem: civitates duodecim, et villae earum.
Their area included the towns of Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem. Altogether there were twelve towns and the surrounding villages.
16 Haec est hereditas tribus filiorum Zabulon per cognationes suas, urbes et viculi earum.
That was the land that was allotted to the clans of the tribe of Zebulun.
17 Issachar egressa est sors quarta per cognationes suas.
The fourth/next tribe that was allotted land was the tribe of Issachar. Each of the clans of that tribe was allotted some of the land.
18 fuitque eius hereditas Iezrael et Casaloth et Sunem
Their land included the cities of Jezreel, Kesulloth, Shunem,
19 et Hapharaim et Seon, et Anaharath
Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath,
20 et Rabboth et Cesion, Abes,
Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez,
21 et Rameth, et Engannim, et Enhadda et Bethpheses.
Remeth, En-Gannim, En-Haddah, and Beth-Pazzez.
22 Et pervenit terminus eius usque Thabor et Sehesima et Bethsames: eruntque exitus eius Iordanis: civitates sedecim, et villae earum.
The border of the area that was allotted to the tribe of Issachar was close to Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-Shemesh [cities], and ended [in the east] at the Jordan [River]. Altogether there were 16 cities and the surrounding villages.
23 Haec est possessio filiorum Issachar per cognationes suas, urbes, et viculi earum.
Those cities and villages were in the land allotted to the clans of the tribe of Issachar.
24 Ceciditque sors quinta tribui filiorum Aser per cognationes suas:
The fifth/next tribe that was allotted land was the tribe of Asher. Each of the clans in that tribe was allotted some of the land.
25 fuitque terminus eorum Halcath et Chali et Beten et Axaph
Their land included the towns of Helkath, Hali, Beten, Acshaph,
26 et Elmelech et Amaad et Messal: et pervenit usque ad Carmelum maris et Sihor et Labanath.
Allammelech, Amad, and Mishal. The western border started at Carmel [Mountain] and Shihor-Libnath.
27 Ac revertitur contra orientem Bethdagon: et pertransit usque Zabulon et Vallem Iephthael contra Aquilonem in Bethemec et Nehiel. Egrediturque ad laevam Cabul,
From there it extended [southeast] to Beth-Dagon [town], and then to [the area that was allotted to the tribe of] Zebulun and Iphtah-El Valley. From there the border extended east and then north to Beth-Emek [town] and Neiel and Cabul [towns].
28 et Abran et Rohob et Hamon et Cana, usque ad Sidonem magnam.
From there it extended west to Abdon, Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah [cities], and continued to Sidon, which is a big city.
29 revertiturque in Horma usque ad civitatem munitissimam Tyrum, et usque Hosa: eruntque exitus eius in mare de funiculo Achziba:
From there the border extended south toward Ramah and to the big city of Tyre that had strong walls around it. From there the border extended [west] to Hosah [town] and ended at the [Mediterranean] Sea. Within their area were the towns of Aczib,
30 et Amma et Aphec et Rohob. civitates viginti duae, et villae earum.
Ummah, Aphek, and Rehob. Altogether there were 22 towns and their surrounding villages.
31 Haec est possessio filiorum Aser per cognationes suas, urbesque et viculi earum.
Those cities and villages were within the land that was allotted to the clans of the tribe of Asher.
32 Filiorum Nephthali sexta sors cecidit per familias suas:
The sixth/next tribe that was allotted land was the tribe of Naphtali. Each of the clans in that tribe was allotted some of the land.
33 et coepit terminus de Heleph et Elon in Saananim, et Adami, quae est Neceb, et Iebnael usque Lecum: et egressus eorum usque ad Iordanem:
The border of their land started [in the west] at the [huge] oak tree at Zaanannim, near Heleph [town]. It extended [east] through Adami-Nekeb [city] and Jabneel, and then to Lakkum, and ended at the Jordan [River].
34 revertiturque terminus contra Occidentem in Azanotthabor, atque inde egreditur in Hucuca, et pertransit in Zabulon contra Meridiem, et in Aser contra Occidentem, et in Iuda ad Iordanem contra ortum solis.
The western boundary extended through Aznoth-Tabor as far as Hukkok [city]. It extended to the borders of [the tribe of] Zebulun at the south, to [the border of the tribe of] Asher on the west, and the Jordan [River] at the east.
35 civitates munitissimae, Assedim, Ser, et Emath, et Reccath et Cenereth,
[Within their land were] several cities with strong walls around them. They were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Kinnereth,
36 et Edema et Arama, Asor
Adamah, Ramah, Hazor,
37 et Cedes et Edrai, Enhasor
Kedesh, Edrei, En-Hazor,
38 et Ieron et Magdalel, Horem et Bethanath et Bethsames: civitates decem et novem, et villae earum.
Iron, Migdal-El, Horem, Beth-Anath, and Beth-Shemesh. Altogether there were 19 cities and the surrounding villages.
39 Haec est possessio tribus filiorum Nephthali per cognationes suas, urbes et viculi earum.
Those cities and surrounding villages were in the land that was allotted to the clans of the tribe of Naphtali.
40 Tribui filiorum Dan per familias suas egressa est sors septima:
The seventh/last tribe that was allotted land was the tribe of Dan. Each of the clans in that tribe was allotted some of the land.
41 et fuit terminus possessionis eius Sara et Esthaol, et Hirsemes, id est civitas solis.
Their land included the towns of Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir-Shemesh,
42 Selebin et Aialon et Iethela,
Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,
43 Elon et Themna et Acron,
Elon, Timnah, Ekron,
44 Elthece, Gebbethon et Balaath,
Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,
45 et Iud et Bane et Barach et Gethremmon:
Jehud, Bene-Berak, Gath-Rimmon,
46 et Meiarcon et Arecon, cum termino qui respicit Ioppen,
Me-Jarkon, Rakkon, and the area near Joppa.
47 et ipso fine concluditur. Ascenderuntque filii Dan, et pugnaverunt contra Lesem, ceperuntque eam: et percusserunt eam in ore gladii, et possederunt, et habitaverunt in ea, vocantes nomen eius Lesem Dan, ex nomine Dan patris sui.
But the people of the tribe of Dan were unable to take control of the land that had been allotted to them. So they went [northeast] and fought against the people in Leshem [city]. They defeated and killed all the people who lived there. Then they began to live in Leshem, and changed the name of the city to Dan, the man from whom their tribe descended.
48 Haec est possessio tribus filiorum Dan, per cognationes suas, urbes et viculi earum.
All of those towns and surrounding villages were in the land that was allotted to the clans in the tribe of Dan.
49 Cumque complesset sorte dividere Terram singulis per tribus suas, dederunt filii Israel possessionem Iosue filio Nun in medio sui,
After the Israeli leaders divided the land among the tribes, they allotted some land to Joshua.
50 iuxta praeceptum Domini, urbem quam postulavit, Thamnath Saraa in monte Ephraim: et aedificavit civitatem, habitavitque in ea.
They allotted to him Timnath-Serah. Yahweh had said that he could have whatever city he wanted, and that was the city that he chose. It was in the hilly region which was allotted to the tribe of Ephraim. Joshua rebuilt the city and lived there.
51 Hae sunt possessiones, quas sorte diviserunt Eleazar sacerdos, et Iosue filius Nun, et principes familiarum, ac tribuum filiorum Israel in Silo, coram Domino ad ostium tabernaculi testimonii, partitique sunt Terram.
Those were the areas that were allotted to the various tribes of Israel. Eleazar the Supreme Priest and Joshua and the leaders of each tribe divided up the land while they were all at Shiloh, by (casting lots/throwing marked stones) [to decide which area each tribe would receive]. They did that while Yahweh was watching, at the entrance of the Sacred Tent. In that way they completed dividing up the land.
