Iohannem 9
1 Et praeteriens Iesus vidit hominem caecum a nativitate:
As Jesus passed along, he saw a man who had been born blind.
2 et interrogaverunt eum discipuli eius: Rabbi, quis peccavit, hic, aut parentes eius, ut caecus nasceretur?
And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned: this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Respondit Iesus: Neque hic peccavit, neque parentes eius: sed ut manifestentur opera Dei in illo.
Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his parents sinned. It was only that the works of God might be displayed upon him.
4 Me oportet operari opera eius, qui misit me, donec dies est: venit nox, quando nemo potest operari.
I must do the work of him who sent me, while it is day; the night comes, when no man can work.
5 quamdiu sum in mundo, lux sum mundi.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
6 Haec cum dixisset, expuit in terram, et fecit lutum ex sputo, et linivit lutum super oculos eius,
Having said this, he spit upon the ground, and with the clay, which he made with the spittle, anointed the blind man's eyes,
7 et dixit ei: Vade et lava in natatoria Siloe (quod interpretatur Missus.) Abiit ergo, et lavit, et venit videns.
and said to him, Go wash in the pool of Siloam, (which signifies Sent.) He went, therefore, and washed them, and returned seeing.
8 Itaque vicini, et qui viderant eum prius quia mendicus erat, dicebant: Nonne hic est, qui sedebat, et mendicabat? Alii dicebant: Quia hic est.
Then the neighbors, and they who had before seen him blind, said, Is not this he who sat and begged?
9 Alii autem: Nequaquam, sed similis est ei. Ille vero dicebat: Quia ego sum.
Some said, It is he; others, He is like him. He said, I am he.
10 Dicebant ergo ei: Quomodo aperti sunt tibi oculi?
They asked him, then, How did you receive your sight?
11 Respondit: Ille homo, qui dicitur Iesus, lutum fecit: et unxit oculos meos, et dixit mihi: Vade ad natatoria Siloe, et lava. Et abii, et lavi, et video.
He answered, A man called Jesus, made clay and anointed my eyes, and said to me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash your eyes. I went accordingly, and washed them, and saw.
12 Et dixerunt ei: Ubi est ille? Ait: Nescio.
Then they asked him, Where is he? He answered, I know not.
13 Adducunt eum ad Pharisaeos, qui caecus fuerat.
Then they brought him, who had been blind, to the Pharisees;
14 Erat autem sabbatum quando lutum fecit Iesus, et aperuit oculos eius.
(now it was on a Sabbath, that Jesus made the clay, and gave him his sight.)
15 Iterum ergo interrogabant eum Pharisaei quomodo vidisset. Ille autem dixit eis: Lutum mihi posuit super oculos, et lavi, et video.
The Pharisees likewise, therefore, asked him how he had received his sight. He answered, He put clay on my eyes, and I washed them, and now see.
16 Dicebant ergo ex Pharisaeis quidam: Non est hic homo a Deo, qui sabbatum non custodit. Alii autem dicebant: Quomodo potest homo peccator haec signa facere? Et schisma erat inter eos.
Upon this some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, for he observes not the Sabbath. Others said, How can one that is a sinner perform such miracles? And they were divided among themselves.
17 Dicunt ergo caeco iterum: Tu quid dicis de illo, qui aperuit oculos tuos? Ille autem dixit: Quia propheta est.
Again they asked the man, who had been blind, What do you say of him, for giving you sight? He answered, He is a prophet.
18 Non crediderunt ergo Iudaei de illo, quia caecus fuisset et vidisset, donec vocaverunt parentes eius, qui viderat:
But the Jews believed not that the man had been blind, and had received his sight; till they called his parents,
19 et interrogaverunt eos, dicentes: Hic est filius vester, quem vos dicitis quia caecus natus est? Quomodo ergo nunc videt?
and asked them, Do you say, that this is your son, who was born blind? How, then, does he now see?
20 Responderunt eis parentes eius, et dixerunt: Scimus quia hic est filius noster, et quia caecus natus est:
His parents answered, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21 quomodo autem nunc videat, nescimus: aut quis eius aperuit oculos, nos nescimus: ipsum interrogate: aetatem habet, ipse de se loquatur.
but how he now sees, or who opened his eyes, we know not. He is of age, ask him; he will answer for himself.
22 Haec dixerunt parentes eius, quoniam timebant Iudaeos: iam enim conspiraverunt Iudaei, ut si quis eum confiteretur esse Christum, extra synagogam fieret.
His parents spoke thus, because they fear the Jews: for the Jews had already determined, that whosoever acknowledged Jesus to be the Messiah, should be expelled from the synagogue.
23 Propterea parentes eius dixerunt: Quia aetatem habet, ipsum interrogate.
For this reason his parents said, He is of age, ask him.
24 Vocaverunt ergo rursum hominem, qui fuerat caecus, et dixerunt ei: Da gloriam Deo. nos scimus quia hic homo peccator est.
A second time, therefore, they called the man, who had been born blind, and said to him, Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.
25 Dixit ergo eis ille: Si peccator est, nescio: unum scio, quia caecus cum essem, modo video.
He replied, Whether he be a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, I now see.
26 Dixerunt ergo illi: Quid fecit tibi? quomodo aperuit tibi oculos?
They said to him again, What did he do to you? How did he make you see?
27 Respondit eis: Dixi vobis iam, et audistis: quod iterum vultis audire? numquid et vos vultis discipuli eius fieri?
He answered, I told you before; did you not hear? Why would you hear it repeated? Will you, also, be his disciples?
28 Maledixerunt ergo ei, et dixerunt: Tu discipulus illius sis: nos autem Moysi discipuli sumus.
They reviled him and said, You are his disciple. As for us, we are disciples of Moses.
29 Nos scimus quia Moysi locutus est Deus: hunc autem nescimus unde sit.
We know that God spoke to Moses: as for this man, we know not whence he is.
30 Respondit ille homo, et dixit eis: In hoc enim mirabile est quia vos nescitis unde sit, et aperuit meos oculos:
The man replied, This is surprising, that you know not whence he is, although he has given me sight.
31 scimus autem quia peccatores Deus non audit: sed si quis Dei cultor est, et voluntatem eius facit, hunc exaudit.
We know that God hears not sinners; but if any man worship God, and obey him, that man he hears.
Never was it heard before, that any man gave sight to one born blind. (aiōn g165)
33 Nisi esset hic a Deo, non poterat facere quidquam.
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.
34 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: In peccatis natus es totus, et tu doces nos? Et eiecerunt eum foras.
They replied, You were altogether born in sin, and do you teach us? And they cast him out.
35 Audivit Iesus quia eiecerunt eum foras: et cum invenisset eum, dixit ei: Tu credis in Filium Dei?
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having met him, said to him, Do you believe on the Son of God?
36 Respondit ille, et dixit: Quis est, Domine, ut credam in eum?
He answered, Who is he, Sir, that I may believe on him?
37 Et dixit ei Iesus: Et vidisti eum, et qui loquitur tecum, ipse est.
Jesus said to him, Not only have you seen him; but it is he, who talks with you.
38 At ille ait: Credo Domine. Et procidens adoravit eum.
And he cried, Master, I believe; and threw himself prostrate before him.
39 Et dixit ei Iesus: In iudicium ego in hunc mundum veni: ut qui non vident videant, et qui vident caeci fiant.
And Jesus said, For judgment am I come into this world, that they who see not, may see; and that they who see, may become blind.
40 Et audierunt quidam ex Pharisaeis, qui cum ipso erant, et dixerunt ei: Numquid et nos caeci sumus?
Some Pharisees, who were present, hearing this, said to him, Are we also blind?
41 Dixit eis Iesus: Si caeci essetis, non haberetis peccatum. nunc vero dicitis: Quia videmus. Peccatum vestrum manet.
Jesus answered, If you were blind, you would not have sin: but you say, We see: therefore your sin remains.
