Iohannem 11
1 Erat autem quidam languens Lazarus a Bethania, de castello Mariae, et Marthae sororum eius.
But there was a certain man sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 (Maria autem erat, quae unxit Dominum unguento, et extersit pedes eius capillis suis: cuius frater Lazarus infirmabatur.)
It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
3 Miserunt ergo sorores eius ad eum dicentes: Domine, ecce quem amas infirmatur.
The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4 Audiens autem Iesus dixit eis: Infirmitas haec non est ad mortem, sed pro gloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam.
And Jesus hearing this said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
5 Diligebat autem Iesus Martham, et sororem eius Mariam, et Lazarum.
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tunc quidem mansit in eodem loco duobus diebus.
When therefore he heard that he was sick, he remained in the place where he was two days.
7 deinde post haec dixit discipulis suis: Eamus in Iudaeam iterum.
Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 Dicunt ei discipuli: Rabbi, nunc quaerebant te Iudaei lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc?
The disciples say to him, Rabbi, the Jews but just now were seeking to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?
9 Respondit Iesus: Nonne duodecim sunt horae diei? Si quis ambulaverit in die, non offendit, quia lucem huius mundi videt:
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world;
10 si autem ambulaverit in nocte, offendit, quia lux non est in eo.
but if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth; because the light is not in him.
11 Haec ait, et post haec dixit eis: Lazarus amicus noster dormit: sed vado ut a somno excitem eum.
This he spoke, and afterwards said to them, Our friend Lazarus hath fallen asleep; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Dixerunt ergo discipuli eius: Domine, si dormit, salvus erit.
The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he hath fallen asleep, he will recover.
13 Dixerat autem Iesus de morte eius: illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somni diceret.
But Jesus had spoken of his death; but they thought that he spoke of the taking of rest in sleep.
14 Tunc ergo Iesus dixit eis manifeste: Lazarus mortuus est:
Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.
15 et gaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi. sed eamus ad eum.
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there; that ye may believe; but let us go to him.
16 Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos: Eamus et nos, et moriamur cum eo.
Then said Thomas, who was called Didymus, to his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Venit itaque Iesus: et invenit eum quattuor dies iam in monumento habentem.
Having come, therefore, Jesus found that he had been four days in the tomb.
18 (Erat autem Bethania iuxta Ierosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.)
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;
19 Multi autem ex Iudaeis venerant ad Martham, et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre suo.
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Martha ergo ut audivit quia Iesus venit, occurrit illi: Maria autem domi sedebat.
Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him; but Mary continued sitting in the house.
21 Dixit ergo Martha ad Iesum: Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meus non fuisset mortuus:
Then said Martha to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
22 Sed et nunc scio quia quaecumque poposceris a Deo, dabit tibi Deus.
and even now I know that whatever thou shalt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Dicit illi Iesus: Resurget frater tuus.
Jesus saith to her, Thy brother will rise again.
24 Dicit ei Martha: Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die.
Martha saith to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Dixit ei Iesus: Ego sum resurrectio, et vita: qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet:
Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he have died, will live;
and whoever liveth and believeth in me will never die. Believest thou this? (aiōn g165)
27 Ait illi: Utique Domine, ego credidi, quia tu es Christus filius Dei vivi, qui in hunc mundum venisti.
She saith to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, he who was to come into the world.
28 Et cum haec dixisset, abiit, et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio, dicens: Magister adest, et vocat te.
And having said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here and calleth for thee.
29 Illa ut audivit, surrexit cito, et venit ad eum:
She, when she heard this, riseth quickly and cometh to him.
30 nondum enim venerat Iesus in castellum: sed erat adhuc in illo loco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.
Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha met him.
31 Iudaei ergo, qui erant cum ea in domo, et consolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit, et exiit, secuti sunt eam dicentes: Quia vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi.
The Jews then who were with her in the house and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up hastily and went out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32 Maria ergo, cum venisset ubi erat Iesus, videns eum, cecidit ad pedes eius, et dicit ei: Domine, si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus.
Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was, as soon as she saw him fell down at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33 Iesus ergo, ut vidit eam plorantem, et Iudaeos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, infremuit spiritu, et turbavit seipsum,
Jesus therefore when he saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, was greatly moved in his spirit, and much troubled,
34 et dixit: Ubi posuistis eum? Dicunt ei: Domine, veni, et vide.
and said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.
35 Et lacrymatus est Iesus.
Jesus wept.
36 Dixerunt ergo Iudaei: Ecce quomodo amabat eum.
The Jews therefore said, See, how he loved him!
37 Quidam autem ex ipsis dixerunt: Non poterat hic, qui aperuit oculos caeci nati, facere ut hic non moreretur?
But some of them said, Could not he, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have also caused that this man should not have died?
38 Iesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum. erat autem spelunca: et lapis superpositus erat ei.
Jesus therefore, again greatly moved within himself, cometh to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39 Ait Iesus: Tollite lapidem. Dicit ei Martha soror eius, qui mortuus fuerat: Domine, iam foetet, quatriduanus est enim.
Jesus saith, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, by this time the body is offensive; for he hath been dead four days.
40 Dicit ei Iesus: Nonne dixi tibi quoniam si credideris, videbis gloriam Dei?
Jesus saith to her, Did I not tell thee, that if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldst see the glory of God?
41 Tulerunt ergo lapidem: Iesus autem elevatis sursum oculis, dixit: Pater gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.
They therefore took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father! I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum, qui circumstat, dixi: ut credant quia tu me misisti.
Yet I knew that thou hearest me always; but for the sake of the multitude standing around I said it, that they might believe that thou didst send me.
43 Haec cum dixisset, voce magna clamavit: Lazare veni foras.
And having thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth!
44 Et statim prodiit qui fuerat mortuus, ligatus pedes, et manus institis, et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dixit eis Iesus: Solvite eum, et sinite abire.
He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Multi ergo ex Iudaeis, qui venerant ad Mariam, et Martham, et viderant quae fecit Iesus, crediderunt in eum.
Many of the Jews therefore who had come to Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him.
46 Quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt ad Pharisaeos, et dixerunt eis quae fecit Iesus.
But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.
47 Collegerunt ergo Pontifices et Pharisaei concilium, et dicebant: Quid faciamus, quia hic homo multa signa facit?
Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What are we to do, seeing that this man worketh many signs?
48 Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum: et venient Romani, et tollent nostrum locum, et gentem.
If we thus let him alone, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.
49 Unus autem ex ipsis Caiphas nomine, cum esset Pontifex anni illius, dixit eis: Vos nescitis quidquam,
And a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high-priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all;
50 nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non tota gens pereat.
nor do ye consider that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.
51 Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit: sed cum esset Pontifex anni illius, prophetavit, quod Iesus moriturus erat pro gente,
And this he spoke not from himself; but being high-priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation;
52 et non tantum pro gente, sed ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.
and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together in one body the children of God that are scattered abroad.
53 Ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt ut interficerent eum.
Therefore from that day forth they consulted together to put him to death.
54 Iesus ergo iam non in palam ambulabat apud Iudaeos, sed abiit in regionem iuxta desertum, in civitatem, quae dicitur Ephrem, et ibi morabatur cum discipulis suis.
Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but departed thence to the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there abode with the disciples.
55 Proximum autem erat Pascha Iudaeorum: et ascenderunt multi Ierosolymam de regione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent seipsos.
And the passover of the Jews was at hand; and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Quaerebant ergo Iesum: et colloquebantur ad invicem, in templo stantes: Quid putatis, quia non venit ad diem festum?
They sought therefore for Jesus, and said one to another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? that he will not come to the feast?
57 Dederant autem Pontifices, et Pharisaei mandatum, ut si quis cognoverit ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendat eum.
Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders, that, if any one knew where he was, he should give information, that they might seize him.
