Genesis 47
1 Ingressus ergo Ioseph nunciavit Pharaoni, dicens: Pater meus et fratres, oves eorum et armenta, et cuncta quae possident, venerunt de Terra Chanaan: et ecce consistunt in Terra Gessen.
And Joseph comes and declares [it] to Pharaoh, and says, “My father, and my brothers, and their flock, and their herd, and all they have, have come from the land of Canaan, and behold, they [are] in the land of Goshen.”
2 Extremos quoque fratrum suorum quinque viros constituit coram rege:
And out of his brothers he has taken five men, and sets them before Pharaoh;
3 quos ille interrogavit: Quid habetis operis? Responderunt: Pastores ovium sumus servi tui, et nos, et patres nostri.
and Pharaoh says to his brothers, “What [are] your works?” And they say to Pharaoh, “Your servants [are] feeders of a flock, both we and our fathers”;
4 Ad peregrinandum in terram tuam venimus: quoniam non est herba gregibus servorum tuorum, ingravescente fame in terra Chanaan: petimusque ut esse nos iubeas servos tuos in Terra Gessen.
and they say to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for the flock which your servants have, for the famine in the land of Canaan [is] grievous; and now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5 Dixit itaque rex ad Ioseph: Pater tuus et fratres tui venerunt ad te.
And Pharaoh speaks to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you:
6 Terra Aegypti in conspectu tuo est: in optimo loco fac eos habitare, et trade eis Terram Gessen. Quod si nosti in eis esse viros industrios, constitue illos magistros pecorum meorum.
the land of Egypt is before you; cause your father and your brothers to dwell in the best of the land—they dwell in the land of Goshen, and if you have known, and there are among them men of ability, then you have set them [as] heads over the livestock I have.”
7 Post haec introduxit Ioseph patrem suum ad Regem, et statuit eum coram eo: qui benedicens illi,
And Joseph brings in his father Jacob, and causes him to stand before Pharaoh; and Jacob blesses Pharaoh.
8 et interrogatus ab eo: Quot sunt dies annorum vitae tuae?
And Pharaoh says to Jacob, “How many [are] the days of the years of your life?”
9 Respondit: Dies peregrinationis meae centum triginta annorum sunt, parvi et mali, et non pervenerunt usque ad dies patrum meorum quibus peregrinati sunt.
And Jacob says to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojournings [are] one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers, in the days of their sojournings.”
10 Et benedicto rege, egressus est foras.
And Jacob blesses Pharaoh, and goes out from before Pharaoh.
11 Ioseph vero patri et fratribus suis dedit possessionem in Aegypto in optimo terrae loco, Ramesses, ut praeceperat Pharao.
And Joseph settles his father and his brothers, and gives a possession to them in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh commanded;
12 Et alebat eos, omnemque domum patris sui, praebens cibaria singulis.
and Joseph nourishes his father, and his brothers, and all the house of his father [with] bread, according to the mouth of the infants.
13 In toto enim orbe panis deerat, et oppresserat fames terram, maxime Aegypti et Chanaan.
And there is no bread in all the land, for the famine [is] very grievous, and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan are feeble because of the famine;
14 E quibus omnem pecuniam congregavit pro venditione frumenti, et intulit eam in aerarium regis.
and Joseph gathers all the silver that is found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain that they are buying, and Joseph brings the silver into the house of Pharaoh.
15 Cumque defecisset emptoribus pretium, venit cuncta Aegyptus ad Ioseph, dicens: Da nobis panes: quare morimur coram te, deficiente pecunia?
And the silver is consumed out of the land of Egypt and out of the land of Canaan, and all the Egyptians come to Joseph, saying, “Give bread to us—why do we die before you, though the money has ceased?”
16 Quibus ille respondit: Adducite pecora vestra, et dabo vobis pro eis cibos, si pretium non habetis.
And Joseph says, “Give your livestock; and I give to you for your livestock, if the money has ceased.”
17 Quae cum adduxissent, dedit eis alimenta pro equis, et ovibus, et bobus, et asinis: sustentavitque eos illo anno pro commutatione pecorum.
And they bring in their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gives to them bread, for the horses, and for the livestock of the flock, and for the livestock of the herd, and for the donkeys; and he tends them with bread, for all their livestock, during that year.
18 Venerunt quoque anno secundo, et dixerunt ei: Non celamus domino nostro quod deficiente pecunia, pecora simul defecerunt: nec clam te est, quod absque corporibus et terra nihil habeamus.
And that year is finished, and they come to him on the second year, and say to him, “We do not hide from my lord, that since the money has been finished, and possession of the livestock [is] to my lord, there has not been left before my lord except our bodies, and our ground;
19 Cur ergo moriemur te vidente? et nos et terra nostra tui erimus: eme nos in servitutem regiam, et praebe semina, ne pereunte cultore redigatur terra in solitudinem.
why do we die before your eyes, both we and our ground? Buy us and our ground for bread, and we and our ground are servants to Pharaoh; and give seed, and we live, and do not die, and the ground is not desolate.”
20 Emit igitur Ioseph omnem Terram Aegypti, vendentibus singulis possessiones suas prae magnitudine famis. Subiecitque eam Pharaoni,
And Joseph buys all the ground of Egypt for Pharaoh, for the Egyptians have each sold his field, for the famine has been severe on them, and the land becomes Pharaoh’s;
21 et cunctos populos eius a novissimis terminis Aegypti usque ad extremos fines eius,
as for the people, he has removed them to cities from the [one] end of the border of Egypt even to its [other] end.
22 praeter terram sacerdotum, quae a rege tradita fuerat eis: quibus et statuta cibaria ex horreis publicis praebebantur, et idcirco non sunt compulsi vendere possessiones suas.
Only the ground of the priests he has not bought, for the priests have a portion from Pharaoh, and they have eaten their portion which Pharaoh has given to them, therefore they have not sold their ground.
23 Dixit ergo Ioseph ad populos: En ut cernitis, et vos et terram vestram Pharao possidet: accipite semina, et serite agros,
And Joseph says to the people, “Behold, I have bought you today and your ground for Pharaoh; behold, seed for you, and you have sown the ground,
24 ut fruges habere possitis. Quintam partem regi dabitis: quattuor reliquas permitto vobis in sementem, et in cibum familiis et liberis vestris.
and it has come to pass in the increases, that you have given a fifth to Pharaoh, and four of the parts are for yourselves, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for those who [are] in your houses, and for food for your infants.”
25 Qui responderunt: Salus nostra in manu tua est: respiciat nos tantum dominus noster, et laeti serviemus regi.
And they say, “You have revived us; we find grace in the eyes of my lord, and have been servants to Pharaoh”;
26 Ex eo tempore usque in praesentem diem in universa terra Aegypti regibus quinta pars solvitur, et factum est quasi in legem, absque terra sacerdotali, quae libera ab hac conditione fuit.
and Joseph sets it for a statute to this day, concerning the ground of Egypt, [that] Pharaoh has a fifth; only the ground of the priests alone has not become Pharaoh’s.
27 Habitavit ergo Israel in Aegypto, idest, in Terra Gessen, et possedit eam: auctusque est, et multiplicatus nimis.
And Israel dwells in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they have possession in it, and are fruitful, and multiply exceedingly;
28 Et vixit in ea decem et septem annis: factique sunt omnes dies vitae illius centum quadraginta septem annorum.
and Jacob lives in the land of Egypt seventeen years, and the days of Jacob, the years of his life, are one hundred and forty-seven years.
29 Cumque appropinquare cerneret diem mortis suae, vocavit filium suum Ioseph, et dixit ad eum: Si inveni gratiam in conspectu tuo, pone manum tuam sub femore meo: et facies mihi misericordiam et veritatem, ut non sepelias me in Aegypto:
And the days of Israel are near to die, and he calls for his son, for Joseph, and says to him, “Now if I have found grace in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh, and you have done kindness and truth with me; please do not bury me in Egypt,
30 sed dormiam cum patribus meis, et auferas me de terra hac, condasque in sepulchro maiorum meorum. Cui respondit Ioseph: Ego faciam quod iussisti.
and I have lain with my fathers, and you have carried me out of Egypt, and buried me in their burying-place.” And he says, “I do according to your word”;
31 Et ille: Iura ergo, inquit, mihi. Quo iurante, adoravit Israel Deum, conversus ad lectuli caput.
and he says, “Swear to me”; and he swears to him, and Israel bows himself on the head of the bed.
