1 Hae sunt generationes filiorum Noe, Sem, Cham, et Iapheth: natique sunt eis filii post diluvium.
The following are the genealogies of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. They had sons born to them after the flood.
2 Filii Iapheth: Gomer, et Magog, et Madai, et Iavan, et Thubal, et Mosoch, et Thiras.
The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
3 Porro filii Gomer: Ascenez et Riphath et Thogorma.
The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
4 Filii autem Iavan: Elisa et Tharsis, Cetthim et Dodanim.
The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
5 Ab his divisae sunt insulae gentium in regionibus suis, unusquisque secundum linguam suam et familias suas in nationibus suis.
The descendants of these ancestors spread throughout the coastal areas, each group having their own language, with their families developing into different nations.
6 Filii autem Cham: Chus, et Mesraim, et Phuth, et Chanaan.
The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
7 Filii autem Chus: Saba, et Hevila, et Sabatha, et Regma, et Sabatacha. Filii Regma: Saba, et Dadan.
The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.
8 Porro Chus genuit Nemrod: ipse coepit esse potens in terra,
Cush was also the father of Nimrod, who set himself up as the first tyrant on earth.
9 et erat robustus venator coram Domino. Ob hoc exivit proverbium: Quasi Nemrod robustus venator coram Domino.
He was a powerful fighter who defied the Lord; which is why there's the expression, “Like Nimrod, a powerful fighter who defied the Lord.”
10 Fuit autem principium regni eius Babylon, et Arach, et Achad, et Chalanne, in terra Sennaar.
His kingdom began in the cities of Babel, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh, all located in the land of Shinar.
11 De terra illa egressus est Assur, et aedificavit Niniven, et plateas civitatis, et Chale.
From there he moved into Assyria and built the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah,
12 Resen quoque inter Niniven et Chale: haec est civitas magna.
and Resen, which lies between Nineveh and the great city of Calah.
13 At vero Mesraim genuit Ludim, et Anamim, et Laabim, et Nephthuim,
Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, the Naphtuhites,
14 et Phetrusim, et Chasluim: de quibus egressi sunt Philisthiim et Caphtorim.
the Pathrusites, the Casluhites, and the Caphtorites (ancestors of the Philistines).
15 Chanaan autem genuit Sidonem primogenitum suum, Hethaeum,
Canaan was the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and of the Hittites,
16 et Iebusaeum, et Amorrhaeum, et Gergesaeum,
the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,
17 et Hevaeum, et Aracaeum: Sinaeum,
the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,
18 et Aradium, Samaraeum et Amathaeum: et per hos disseminati sunt populi Chananaeorum.
the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Later the Canaanite tribes spread out
19 Factique sunt termini Chanaan venientibus a Sidone Geraram usque ad Gazam, donec ingrediaris Sodomam et Gomorrham, et Adamam, et Seboim usque Lasa.
and the territory of the Canaanites stretched from Sidon towards Gerar and all the way to Gaza, then towards Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, all the way to Lasha.
20 Hi sunt filii Cham in cognationibus, et linguis, et generationibus, terrisque et gentibus suis.
These were the sons of Ham according to their tribes, languages, lands, and nation.
21 De Sem quoque nati sunt, patre omnium filiorum Heber, fratre Iapheth maiore.
Shem, whose older brother was Japheth, also had sons. Shem was the forefather of all the sons of Eber.
22 Filii Sem: Aelam et Assur, et Arphaxad, et Lud, et Aram.
The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.
23 Filii Aram: Us, et Hul, et Gether, et Mes.
The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
24 At vero Arphaxad genuit Sale, de quo ortus est Heber.
Arphaxad was the father of Shelah. Shelah was the father of Eber.
25 Natique sunt Heber filii duo: nomen uni Phaleg, eo quod in diebus eius divisa sit terra: et nomen fratris eius Iectan.
Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; the name of his brother was Joktan.
26 Qui Iectan genuit Elmodad, et Saleph, et Asarmoth, Iare,
Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
27 et Aduram, et Uzal, et Decla,
Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
28 et Ebal, et Abimael, Saba,
Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
29 et Ophir, et Hevila, et Iobab. omnes isti, filii Iectan.
Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. These were all sons of Joktan.
30 Et facta est habitatio eorum de Messa pergentibus usque Sephar montem orientalem.
They lived in the land lying between Mesha to Sephar, in the hill country to the east.
31 Isti sunt filii Sem secundum cognationes et linguas, et regiones in gentibus suis.
These were the sons of Shem, according to their tribes, languages, lands, and nations.
32 Hae familiae Noe iuxta populos et nationes suas. Ab his divisae sunt gentes in terra post diluvium.
These were all the tribes descended from Noah's sons, according to their genealogies and national groups. From these ancestors the different nations of the earth spread around the world after the flood.
