1 Seniores ergo, qui in vobis sunt, obsecro, consenior et testis Christi passionum: qui et eius, quae in futuro revelanda est, gloriae communicator:
Therfor Y, an euene eldre man, and a witnesse of Cristis passiouns, which also am a comynere of that glorie, that schal be schewid in tyme to comynge; byseche ye the eldre men,
2 pascite qui in vobis est gregem Dei, providentes non coacte, sed spontanee secundum Deum: neque turpis lucri gratia, sed voluntarie:
that ben among you, fede ye the flok of God, that is among you, and puruey ye, not as constreyned, but wilfulli, bi God; not for loue of foule wynnyng,
3 neque ut dominantes in cleris, sed forma facti gregis ex animo.
but wilfulli, nether as hauynge lordschip in the clergie, but that ye ben maad ensaumple of the floc, of wille.
4 Et cum apparuerit princeps pastorum, percipietis immarcescibilem gloriae coronam.
And whanne the prince of scheepherdis schal appere, ye schulen resseyue the coroun of glorie, that may neuere fade.
5 Similiter adolescentes subditi estote senioribus. Omnes autem invicem humilitatem insinuate, quia Deus superbis resistit, humilibus autem dat gratiam.
Also, ye yonge men, be ye suget to eldre men, and alle schewe ye togidere mekenesse; for the Lord withstondith proude men, but he yyueth grace to meke men.
6 Humiliamini igitur sub potenti manu Dei, ut vos exaltet in tempore visitationis:
Therfor be ye mekid vndir the myyti hoond of God, that he reise you in the tyme of visitacioun,
7 omnem solicitudinem vestram proiicientes in eum, quoniam ipsi cura est de vobis.
and caste ye al youre bisynesse in to hym, for to hym is cure of you.
8 Sobrii estote, et vigilate: quia adversarius vester diabolus tamquam leo rugiens circuit, quaerens quem devoret:
Be ye sobre, and wake ye, for youre aduersarie, the deuel, as a rorynge lioun goith aboute, sechinge whom he schal deuoure.
9 Cui resistite fortes in fide: scientes eamdem passionem ei, quae in mundo est, vestrae fraternitati fieri.
Whom ayenstonde ye, stronge in the feith, witynge that the same passioun is maad to thilke brithirhode of you, that is in the world.
10 Deus autem omnis gratiae, qui vocavit nos in aeternam suam gloriam in Christo Iesu, modicum passos ipse perficiet, confirmabit, solidabitque. (aiōnios g166)
And God of al grace, that clepide you in to his euerlastinge glorie, you suffrynge a litil, he schal performe, and schal conferme, and schal make sad. (aiōnios g166)
11 Ipsi gloria, et imperium in saecula saeculorum: Amen. (aiōn g165)
To hym be glorie and lordschip, in to worldis of worldis. Amen. (aiōn g165)
12 Per Silvanum fidelem fratrem vobis, ut arbitror, breviter scripsi: obsecrans et contestans, hanc esse veram gratiam Dei, in qua statis.
Bi Siluan, feithful brother to you as Y deme, Y wroot schortli; bisechinge, and witnessinge that this is the very grace of God, in which ye stonden.
13 Salutat vos Ecclesia, quae est in Babylone collecta, et Marcus filius meus.
The chirche that is gaderid in Babiloyne, and Marcus, my sone, gretith you wel.
14 Salutate invicem in osculo sancto: Gratia vobis omnibus, qui estis in Christo Iesu. Amen.
Grete ye wel togidere in hooli cos. Grace be to you alle that ben in Crist. Amen.
