< Psalmorum 48 >
1 Psalmus cantici. Filiis Core, secunda sabbati. Magnus Dominus et laudabilis nimis, in civitate Dei nostri, in monte sancto ejus.
“A psalm of the sons of Korah.” Great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised In the city of our God, upon his holy mountain.
2 Fundatur exsultatione universæ terræ mons Sion; latera aquilonis, civitas regis magni.
Beautiful in its elevation is Mount Zion, The joy of the whole earth; The joy of the farthest North is the city of the great king;
3 Deus in domibus ejus cognoscetur cum suscipiet eam.
In her palaces God is known as a refuge.
4 Quoniam ecce reges terræ congregati sunt; convenerunt in unum.
For, lo! kings were assembled against it; They passed away together.
5 Ipsi videntes, sic admirati sunt, conturbati sunt, commoti sunt.
As soon as they saw, they were astonished; They were confounded, and hasted away.
6 Tremor apprehendit eos; ibi dolores ut parturientis:
There terror seized upon them, —Pain, as of a woman in travail;
7 in spiritu vehementi conteres naves Tharsis.
As when the east wind breaketh in pieces The ships of Tarshish.
8 Sicut audivimus, sic vidimus, in civitate Domini virtutum, in civitate Dei nostri: Deus fundavit eam in æternum.
As we have heard, so have we seen In the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God; God will establish it for ever. (Pause)
9 Suscepimus, Deus, misericordiam tuam in medio templi tui.
We think of thy loving-kindness, O God! In the midst of thy temple!
10 Secundum nomen tuum, Deus, sic et laus tua in fines terræ; justitia plena est dextera tua.
As thy name, O God! so thy praise, extendeth to the ends of the earth; Thy right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Lætetur mons Sion, et exsultent filiæ Judæ, propter judicia tua, Domine.
Mount Zion rejoiceth, The daughters of Judah exult, On account of thy righteous judgments.
12 Circumdate Sion, et complectimini eam; narrate in turribus ejus.
Go round about Zion; number her towers;
13 Ponite corda vestra in virtute ejus, et distribuite domos ejus, ut enarretis in progenie altera.
Mark well her bulwarks; count her palaces; That ye may tell it to the next generation!
14 Quoniam hic est Deus, Deus noster in æternum, et in sæculum sæculi: ipse reget nos in sæcula.
For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide unto death.
