< Psalmorum 114 >
1 Alleluja. In exitu Israël de Ægypto, domus Jacob de populo barbaro,
At the time of the exodus of Israel from Egypt, when the descendants of Jacob left that foreign country,
2 facta est Judæa sanctificatio ejus; Israël potestas ejus.
the land of Judah became the Lord's sanctuary, Israel his kingdom.
3 Mare vidit, et fugit; Jordanis conversus est retrorsum.
The Red Sea saw them and ran away; the Jordan River retreated.
4 Montes exsultaverunt ut arietes, et colles sicut agni ovium.
Mountains jumped in fright like rams, hills startled like lambs.
5 Quid est tibi, mare, quod fugisti? et tu, Jordanis, quia conversus es retrorsum?
Red Sea—why did you run away? Jordan River—why did you retreat?
6 montes, exsultastis sicut arietes? et colles, sicut agni ovium?
Mountains—why did you jump in fright? Hills—why did you startle like lambs?
7 A facie Domini mota est terra, a facie Dei Jacob:
Earth, tremble in the presence of the Lord, tremble in the presence of the God of Jacob!
8 qui convertit petram in stagna aquarum, et rupem in fontes aquarum.
He is the one who turned the rock into a pool of water; making water flow from the hard rock.
