< Proverbiorum 14 >

1 Sapiens mulier ædificat domum suam; insipiens exstructam quoque manibus destruet.
A wijs womman bildith hir hous; and an unwijs womman schal distrie with hondis an hous bildid.
2 Ambulans recto itinere, et timens Deum, despicitur ab eo qui infami graditur via.
A man goynge in riytful weie, and dredinge God, is dispisid of hym, that goith in a weie of yuel fame.
3 In ore stulti virga superbiæ; labia autem sapientium custodiunt eos.
The yerde of pride is in the mouth of a fool; the lippis of wijs men kepen hem.
4 Ubi non sunt boves, præsepe vacuum est; ubi autem plurimæ segetes, ibi manifesta est fortitudo bovis.
Where oxis ben not, the cratche is void; but where ful many cornes apperen, there the strengthe of oxe is opyn.
5 Testis fidelis non mentitur; profert autem mendacium dolosus testis.
A feithful witnesse schal not lie; a gileful witnesse bringith forth a leesing.
6 Quærit derisor sapientiam, et non invenit; doctrina prudentium facilis.
A scornere sekith wisdom, and he fyndith not; the teching of prudent men is esy.
7 Vade contra virum stultum, et nescit labia prudentiæ.
Go thou ayens a man a fool; and he schal not knowe the lippis of prudence.
8 Sapientia callidi est intelligere viam suam, et imprudentia stultorum errans.
The wisdom of a fel man is to vndirstonde his weie; and the vnwarnesse of foolis errith.
9 Stultus illudet peccatum, et inter justos morabitur gratia.
A fool scorneth synne; grace schal dwelle among iust men.
10 Cor quod novit amaritudinem animæ suæ, in gaudio ejus non miscebitur extraneus.
The herte that knowith the bittirnesse of his soule; a straunger schal not be meddlid in the ioie therof.
11 Domus impiorum delebitur: tabernacula vero justorum germinabunt.
The hous of wickid men schal be don awei; the tabernaclis of iust men schulen buriowne.
12 Est via quæ videtur homini justa, novissima autem ejus deducunt ad mortem.
Sotheli a weie is, that semeth iust to a man; but the laste thingis therof leden forth to deth.
13 Risus dolore miscebitur, et extrema gaudii luctus occupat.
Leiyyng schal be medlid with sorewe; and morenyng ocupieth the laste thingis of ioye.
14 Viis suis replebitur stultus, et super eum erit vir bonus.
A fool schal be fillid with hise weies; and a good man schal be aboue hym.
15 Innocens credit omni verbo; astutus considerat gressus suos. Filio doloso nihil erit boni; servo autem sapienti prosperi erunt actus, et dirigetur via ejus.
An innocent man bileueth to eche word; a felle man biholdith hise goyngis.
16 Sapiens timet, et declinat a malo; stultus transilit, et confidit.
A wijs man dredith, and bowith awei fro yuel; a fool skippith ouer, and tristith.
17 Impatiens operabitur stultitiam, et vir versutus odiosus est.
A man vnpacient schal worche foli; and a gileful man is odiouse.
18 Possidebunt parvuli stultitiam, et exspectabunt astuti scientiam.
Litle men of wit schulen holde foli; and felle men schulen abide kunnyng.
19 Jacebunt mali ante bonos, et impii ante portas justorum.
Yuel men schulen ligge bifor goode men; and vnpitouse men bifor the yatis of iust men.
20 Etiam proximo suo pauper odiosus erit: amici vero divitum multi.
A pore man schal be hateful, yhe, to his neiybore; but many men ben frendis of riche men.
21 Qui despicit proximum suum peccat; qui autem miseretur pauperis beatus erit. Qui credit in Domino misericordiam diligit.
He that dispisith his neiybore, doith synne; but he that doith merci to a pore man, schal be blessid. He that bileueth in the Lord, loueth merci;
22 Errant qui operantur malum; misericordia et veritas præparant bona.

23 In omni opere erit abundantia; ubi autem verba sunt plurima, ibi frequenter egestas.

24 Corona sapientium divitiæ eorum; fatuitas stultorum imprudentia.
The coroun of wise men is the richessis of hem; the fooli of foolis is vnwarnesse.
25 Liberat animas testis fidelis, et profert mendacia versipellis.
A feithful witnesse delyuereth soulis; and a fals man bringith forth leesyngis.
26 In timore Domini fiducia fortitudinis, et filiis ejus erit spes.
In the drede of the Lord is triste of strengthe; and hope schal be to the sones of it.
27 Timor Domini fons vitæ, ut declinent a ruina mortis.
The drede of the Lord is a welle of lijf; that it bowe awei fro the fallyng of deth.
28 In multitudine populi dignitas regis, et in paucitate plebis ignominia principis.
The dignite of the king is in the multitude of puple; and the schenschipe of a prince is in the fewnesse of puple.
29 Qui patiens est multa gubernatur prudentia; qui autem impatiens est exaltat stultitiam suam.
He that is pacient, is gouerned bi myche wisdom; but he that is vnpacient, enhaunsith his foli.
30 Vita carnium sanitas cordis; putredo ossium invidia.
Helthe of herte is the lijf of fleischis; enuye is rot of boonys.
31 Qui calumniatur egentem exprobrat factori ejus; honorat autem eum qui miseretur pauperis.
He that falsli chalengith a nedi man, dispisith his maker; but he that hath merci on a pore man, onourith that makere.
32 In malitia sua expelletur impius: sperat autem justus in morte sua.
A wickid man is put out for his malice; but a iust man hopith in his deth.
33 In corde prudentis requiescit sapientia, et indoctos quosque erudiet.
Wisdom restith in the herte of a wijs man; and he schal teche alle vnlerned men.
34 Justitia elevat gentem; miseros autem facit populos peccatum.
Riytfulnesse reisith a folc; synne makith puplis wretchis.
35 Acceptus est regi minister intelligens; iracundiam ejus inutilis sustinebit.
A mynystre vndurstondynge is acceptable to a kyng; a mynystre vnprofitable schal suffre the wrathfulnesse of him.
