1 Et dicebat illis: Amen dico vobis, quia sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem donec videant regnum Dei veniens in virtute.
And He said to them, “I tell you assuredly: there are some standing here who will certainly not taste death until they see the Kingdom of God present with power.”
2 Et post dies sex assumit Jesus Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem, et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum solos, et transfiguratus est coram ipsis.
After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John and led them up on a high mountain alone by themselves. Then He was transfigured in front of them;
3 Et vestimenta ejus facta sunt splendentia, et candida nimis velut nix, qualia fullo non potest super terram candida facere.
His clothing became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth is able to whiten.
4 Et apparuit illis Elias cum Moyse: et erant loquentes cum Jesu.
And Elijah appeared to them, along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.
5 Et respondens Petrus, ait Jesu: Rabbi, bonum est nos hic esse: et faciamus tria tabernacula, tibi unum, et Moysi unum, et Eliæ unum.
Well Peter reacted by saying to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three shelters: one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
6 Non enim sciebat quid diceret: erant enim timore exterriti.
(Because they were terrified, he didn't know what to say.)
7 Et facta est nubes obumbrans eos: et venit vox de nube, dicens: Hic est Filius meus carissimus: audite illum.
With that a cloud was covering them and a Voice came out of the cloud: “This is my Son, the beloved. Listen to Him!”
8 Et statim circumspicientes, neminem amplius viderunt, nisi Jesum tantum secum.
And then, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9 Et descendentibus illis de monte, præcepit illis ne cuiquam quæ vidissent, narrarent: nisi cum Filius hominis a mortuis resurrexerit.
Now as they were coming down from the mountain, He ordered them not to recount to any one the things they had seen until the Son of the Man had risen from the dead.
10 Et verbum continuerunt apud se: conquirentes quid esset, cum a mortuis resurrexerit.
So they kept this word to themselves, questioning what the ‘rising from the dead’ meant.
11 Et interrogabant eum, dicentes: Quid ergo dicunt pharisæi et scribæ, quia Eliam oportet venire primum?
And they asked Him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
12 Qui respondens, ait illis: Elias cum venerit primo, restituet omnia: et quomodo scriptum est in Filium hominis, ut multa patiatur et contemnatur.
So in answer He said to them: “Elijah indeed does come first, and restores all things; also how it is written concerning the Son of the Man that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt.
13 Sed dico vobis quia et Elias venit (et fecerunt illi quæcumque voluerunt) sicut scriptum est de eo.
Still, I say to you that ‘Elijah’ has also come, and they did to him as they wished, as it is written about him.”
14 Et veniens ad discipulos suos, vidit turbam magnam circa eos, et scribas conquirentes cum illis.
Upon coming to the disciples, He saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.
15 Et confestim omnis populus videns Jesum, stupefactus est, et expaverunt, et accurrentes salutabant eum.
Well as soon as the crowd saw Him they were excited and ran to greet Him.
16 Et interrogavit eos: Quid inter vos conquiritis?
He asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?”
17 Et respondens unus de turba, dixit: Magister, attuli filium meum ad te habentem spiritum mutum:
In answer a man in the crowd said: “Teacher, I brought you my son, who has a mute spirit.
18 qui ubicumque eum apprehenderit, allidit illum, et spumat, et stridet dentibus, et arescit: et dixi discipulis tuis ut ejicerent illum, et non potuerunt.
And wherever it seizes him it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth and gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. Indeed, I spoke to your disciples, that they might cast it out, but they could not.”
19 Qui respondens eis, dixit: O generatio incredula, quamdiu apud vos ero? quamdiu vos patiar? afferte illum ad me.
But He answered him by saying: “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you, how long shall I put up with you? Bring him to me!”
20 Et attulerunt eum. Et cum vidisset eum, statim spiritus conturbavit illum: et elisus in terram, volutabatur spumans.
So they brought him to Him. Upon seeing Him the spirit convulsed him, and falling to the ground he started wallowing, foaming at the mouth.
21 Et interrogavit patrem ejus: Quantum temporis est ex quo ei hoc accidit? At ille ait: Ab infantia:
Then He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said: “From childhood.
22 et frequenter eum in ignem, et in aquas misit ut eum perderet: sed si quid potes, adjuva nos, misertus nostri.
Really, it has often thrown him both into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
23 Jesus autem ait illi: Si potes credere, omnia possibilia sunt credenti.
Jesus said to him, “It's ‘if you can believe’; all things are possible to the one who believes.”
24 Et continuo exclamans pater pueri, cum lacrimis aiebat: Credo, Domine; adjuva incredulitatem meam.
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
25 Et cum videret Jesus concurrentem turbam, comminatus est spiritui immundo, dicens illi: Surde et mute spiritus, ego præcipio tibi, exi ab eo: et amplius ne introëas in eum.
When Jesus saw that the crowd was running up, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I am commanding you, get out of him and never enter him again!”
26 Et exclamans, et multum discerpens eum, exiit ab eo, et factus est sicut mortuus, ita ut multi dicerent: Quia mortuus est.
Then it yelled, convulsed him violently, and came out. Well he looked to be dead; so much so that many said, “He's dead.”
27 Jesus autem tenens manum ejus elevavit eum, et surrexit.
But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he stayed on his feet.
28 Et cum introisset in domum, discipuli ejus secreto interrogabant eum: Quare nos non potuimus ejicere eum?
Well upon His entering a house His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn't we cast it out?”
29 Et dixit illis: Hoc genus in nullo potest exire, nisi in oratione et jejunio.
He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing except prayer and fasting.”
30 Et inde profecti prætergrediebantur Galilæam: nec volebat quemquam scire.
Having gone out from there they were passing through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know;
31 Docebat autem discipulos suos, et dicebat illis: Quoniam Filius hominis tradetur in manus hominum, et occident eum, et occisus tertia die resurget.
because He was teaching His disciples and saying to them, “The Son of the Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and once killed he will rise on the third day.”
32 At illi ignorabant verbum: et timebant interrogare eum.
But they were not understanding this information, yet were afraid to ask Him.
33 Et venerunt Capharnaum. Qui cum domi essent, interrogabat eos: Quid in via tractabatis?
Then He came to Capernaum; and once in the house He asked them, “What were you debating among yourselves on the road?”
34 At illi tacebant: siquidem in via inter se disputaverunt: quis eorum major esset.
But they kept silent, because on the road they had debated among themselves who was greater.
35 Et residens vocavit duodecim, et ait illis: Si quis vult primus esse, erit omnium novissimus, et omnium minister.
So He sat down, called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
36 Et accipiens puerum, statuit eum in medio eorum: quem cum complexus esset, ait illis:
Then He took a child and stood him in their midst, and embracing him said to them,
37 Quisquis unum ex hujusmodi pueris receperit in nomine meo, me recipit: et quicumque me susceperit, non me suscipit, sed eum qui misit me.
“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives not only me, but the One who sent me.”
38 Respondit illi Joannes, dicens: Magister, vidimus quemdam in nomine tuo ejicientem dæmonia, qui non sequitur nos, et prohibuimus eum.
So John answered Him saying, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, one who doesn't follow us; and we forbade him, because he doesn't follow us.”
39 Jesus autem ait: Nolite prohibere eum: nemo est enim qui faciat virtutem in nomine meo, et possit cito male loqui de me:
But Jesus said: “Do not forbid him, because no one who works a miracle in my name can soon afterward speak evil of me.
40 qui enim non est adversum vos, pro vobis est.
For he who is not against you is for you.
41 Quisquis enim potum dederit vobis calicem aquæ in nomine meo, quia Christi estis: amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam.
Further, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you are Christ's, I tell you with certainty, he will by no means lose his reward.
42 Et quisquis scandalizaverit unum ex his pusillis credentibus in me: bonum est ei magis si circumdaretur mola asinaria collo ejus, et in mare mitteretur.
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe into me to fall, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
43 Et si scandalizaverit te manus tua, abscide illam: bonum est tibi debilem introire in vitam, quam duas manus habentem ire in gehennam, in ignem inextinguibilem, (Geenna g1067)
Further, if your hand is causing you to fall, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into the Life maimed than having both hands to go away into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire— (Geenna g1067)
44 ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.
where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’
45 Et si pes tuus te scandalizat, amputa illum: bonum est tibi claudum introire in vitam æternam, quam duos pedes habentem mitti in gehennam ignis inextinguibilis, (Geenna g1067)
And if your foot is causing you to fall, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into the Life lame than having both feet to be thrown into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire— (Geenna g1067)
46 ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.
where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’
47 Quod si oculus tuus scandalizat te, ejice eum: bonum est tibi luscum introire in regnum Dei, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis, (Geenna g1067)
And if your eye is causing you to fall, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye than having both eyes to be thrown into the Gehenna of fire— (Geenna g1067)
48 ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.
where ‘the worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’
49 Omnis enim igne salietur, et omnis victima sale salietur.
“Further, everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.
50 Bonum est sal: quod si sal insulsum fuerit, in quo illud condietis? Habete in vobis sal, et pacem habete inter vos.
Salt is good, but if the salt loses its saltiness, with what will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
