< Job 40 >
Moreover the LORD answered Job,
"Shall he who argues contend with Shaddai? He who argues with God, let him answer it."
3 Respondens autem Job Domino, dixit:
Then Job answered the LORD,
4 Qui leviter locutus sum, respondere quid possum? manum meam ponam super os meum.
"Look, I am of small account. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
I have spoken once, and I will not answer; Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further."
6 Respondens autem Dominus Job de turbine, dixit:
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind,
"Now brace yourself like a man. I will question you, and you will answer me.
8 Numquid irritum facies judicium meum, et condemnabis me, ut tu justificeris?
Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?
Or do you have an arm like God? Can you thunder with a voice like him?
10 Circumda tibi decorem, et in sublime erigere, et esto gloriosus, et speciosis induere vestibus.
"Now deck yourself with excellency and dignity. Array yourself with honor and majesty.
11 Disperge superbos in furore tuo, et respiciens omnem arrogantem humilia.
Pour out the fury of your anger. Look at everyone who is proud, and bring him low.
12 Respice cunctos superbos, et confunde eos, et contere impios in loco suo.
Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him. Crush the wicked in their place.
13 Absconde eos in pulvere simul, et facies eorum demerge in foveam.
Hide them in the dust together. Bind their faces in the hidden place.
Then I will also admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
15 Ecce behemoth quem feci tecum, fœnum quasi bos comedet.
"Look now at the sauropod, which I made as well as you. He eats grass as an ox.
16 Fortitudo ejus in lumbis ejus, et virtus illius in umbilico ventris ejus.
Look now, his strength is in his thighs. His force is in the muscles of his belly.
17 Stringit caudam suam quasi cedrum; nervi testiculorum ejus perplexi sunt.
He moves his tail like a cedar. The sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18 Ossa ejus velut fistulæ æris; cartilago illius quasi laminæ ferreæ.
His bones are like tubes of bronze. His limbs are like bars of iron.
He is the chief of the ways of God. He who made him gives him his sword.
20 Huic montes herbas ferunt: omnes bestiæ agri ludent ibi.
Surely the mountains produce food for him, where all the animals of the field play.
21 Sub umbra dormit in secreto calami, et in locis humentibus.
He lies under the lotus trees, in the covert of the reed, and the marsh.
22 Protegunt umbræ umbram ejus: circumdabunt eum salices torrentis.
The lotuses cover him with their shade. The willows of the brook surround him.
Look, if a river overflows, he doesn't tremble. He is confident, though the Jordan swells even to his mouth.
24 In oculis ejus quasi hamo capiet eum, et in sudibus perforabit nares ejus.
Shall any take him when he is on the watch, or pierce through his nose with a snare?
