Job 27
1 Addidit quoque Job, assumens parabolam suam, et dixit:
Moreover Job continued his discourse, and said:
2 Vivit Deus, qui abstulit judicium meum, et Omnipotens, qui ad amaritudinem adduxit animam meam.
As God liveth, who hath rejected my cause, And the Almighty, who hath afflicted my soul;
3 Quia donec superest halitus in me, et spiritus Dei in naribus meis,
As long as my breath is in me, And the spirit of God is in my nostrils,
4 non loquentur labia mea iniquitatem, nec lingua mea meditabitur mendacium.
Never shall my lips speak falsehood, Nor my tongue utter deceit.
5 Absit a me ut justos vos esse judicem: donec deficiam, non recedam ab innocentia mea.
God forbid that I should acknowledge you to be just: To my last breath will I assert my integrity.
6 Justificationem meam, quam cœpi tenere, non deseram: neque enim reprehendit me cor meum in omni vita mea.
I will hold fast my innocence, and not let it go; My heart reproacheth me for no part of my life.
7 Sit ut impius, inimicus meus, et adversarius meus quasi iniquus.
May mine enemy be as the wicked, And he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous!
8 Quæ est enim spes hypocritæ, si avare rapiat, et non liberet Deus animam ejus?
For what is the hope of the wicked, when God cutteth off his web, And taketh away his life?
9 Numquid Deus audiet clamorem ejus, cum venerit super eum angustia?
Will he listen to his cry, When trouble cometh upon him?
10 aut poterit in Omnipotente delectari, et invocare Deum omni tempore?
Can he delight himself in the Almighty, And call at all times upon God?
11 Docebo vos per manum Dei quæ Omnipotens habeat, nec abscondam.
I will teach you concerning the hand of God; That which is with the Almighty I will not conceal.
12 Ecce vos omnes nostis: et quid sine causa vana loquimini?
Behold, ye yourselves have all seen it; Why then do ye cherish such vain thoughts?
13 Hæc est pars hominis impii apud Deum, et hæreditas violentorum, quam ob Omnipotente suscipient.
This is the portion of the wicked man from God, —The inheritance which oppressors receive from the Almighty.
14 Si multiplicati fuerint filii ejus, in gladio erunt, et nepotes ejus non saturabuntur pane:
If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
15 qui reliqui fuerint ex eo sepelientur in interitu, et viduæ illius non plorabunt.
Those of them that escape shall be buried by Death, And their widows shall not bewail them.
16 Si comportaverit quasi terram argentum, et sicut lutum præparaverit vestimenta:
Though he heap up silver as dust, And procure raiment as clay, —
17 præparabit quidem, sed justus vestietur illis, et argentum innocens dividet.
He may procure, but the righteous shall wear it, And the innocent shall share the silver.
18 Ædificavit sicut tinea domum suam, et sicut custos fecit umbraculum.
He buildeth his house like the moth, Or like the shed which the watchman maketh.
19 Dives, cum dormierit, nihil secum auferet: aperiet oculos suos, et nihil inveniet.
The rich man lieth down, and is not buried; In the twinkling of an eye he is no more.
20 Apprehendet eum quasi aqua inopia: nocte opprimet eum tempestas.
Terrors pursue him like a flood; A tempest stealeth him away in the night.
21 Tollet eum ventus urens, et auferet, et velut turbo rapiet eum de loco suo.
The east wind carrieth him away, and he perisheth; Yea, it sweepeth him away from his place.
22 Et mittet super eum, et non parcet: de manu ejus fugiens fugiet.
God sendeth his arrows at him, and doth not spare; He would fain escape from His hand.
23 Stringet super eum manus suas, et sibilabit super illum, intuens locum ejus.
Men clap their hands at him, And hiss him away from his place.
