1 Hæ sunt autem generationes Esau, ipse est Edom.
(Here is/I will now give you) a list of the descendants of Esau, whose other name was Edom.
2 Esau accepit uxores de filiabus Chanaan: Ada filiam Elon Hethæi, et Oolibama filiam Anæ filiæ Sebeon Hevæi:
Esau married three women from the Canaan region: Adah, the daughter of Elon from the Heth people-group; Oholibamah, who was the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon from the Hiv people-group;
3 Basemath quoque filiam Ismaël sororem Nabaioth.
and Basemath, who was the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.
4 Peperit autem Ada Eliphaz: Basemath genuit Rahuel:
Esau’s wife Adah gave birth to Eliphaz. Basemath gave birth to Reuel.
5 Oolibama genuit Jehus et Ihelon et Core. Hi filii Esau qui nati sunt ei in terra Chanaan.
Oholibamah gave birth to Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. All these sons of Esau were born while he was living in the Canaan region.
6 Tulit autem Esau uxores suas et filios et filias, et omnem animam domus suæ, et substantiam, et pecora, et cuncta quæ habere poterat in terra Chanaan: et abiit in alteram regionem, recessitque a fratre suo Jacob.
Jacob and Esau had very many possessions. The result was that they needed more land for their livestock. The land where they were living was not big enough for both of them. They had too much livestock. So Esau, whose other name was Edom, had taken his wives and sons and daughters and all the other members of his household, his sheep and goats and his other animals, and all the other things he had obtained in Canaan land, and they had moved to an area that was away from Jacob.
7 Divites enim erant valde, et simul habitare non poterant: nec sustinebat eos terra peregrinationis eorum præ multitudine gregum.
8 Habitavitque Esau in monte Seir, ipse est Edom.
They went to live in the Seir hilly area.
9 Hæ autem sunt generationes Esau patris Edom in monte Seir,
(Here is/I will now give you) another list of the male descendants of Esau. He was the ancestor of the Edom people-group who live in the Seir area.
10 et hæc nomina filiorum ejus: Eliphaz filius Ada uxoris Esau: Rahuel quoque filius Basemath uxoris ejus.
Esau’s wife Adah gave birth to Eliphaz, and Esau’s wife Basemath gave birth to Reuel.
11 Fueruntque Eliphaz filii: Theman, Omar, Sepho, et Gatham, et Cenez.
The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12 Erat autem Thamna concubina Eliphaz filii Esau: quæ peperit ei Amalech. Hi sunt filii Ada uxoris Esau.
Esau’s son Eliphaz also had a (concubine/female slave whom he took as a secondary wife). Her name was Timna. She gave birth to Amalek. Those six men were grandsons of Esau’s wife Adah.
13 Filii autem Rahuel: Nahath et Zara, Samma et Meza: hi filii Basemath uxoris Esau.
Reuel’s sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. They were grandsons of Esau’s wife Basemath.
14 Isti quoque erant filii Oolibama filiæ Anæ filiæ Sebeon, uxoris Esau, quos genuit ei, Jehus et Ihelon et Core.
Esau’s wife Oholibamah, who was the daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon, gave birth to three sons: Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.
15 Hi duces filiorum Esau: filii Eliphaz primogeniti Esau: dux Theman, dux Omra, dux Sepho, dux Cenez,
(Here is/I will now give you) a list of the people-groups who were descendants of Esau. His oldest son Eliphaz was the ancestor of the Teman people-group, the Omar people-group, the Zepho people-group, the Kenaz people-group,
16 dux Core, dux Gathan, dux Amalech. Hi filii Eliphaz in terra Edom, et hi filii Ada.
the Korah people-group, the Gatam people-group, and the Amalek people-group. They were descendants of Eliphaz and of Esau’s wife Adah. They lived in the Edom region.
17 Hi quoque filii Rahuel filii Esau: dux Nahath, dux Zara, dux Samma, dux Meza: hi autem duces Rahuel in terra Edom: isti filii Basemath uxoris Esau.
The sons of Esau’s son Reuel were ancestors of the Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah people-groups. They were descended from Esau’s wife Basemath. They also lived in Edom.
18 Hi autem filii Oolibama uxoris Esau: dux Jehus, dux Ihelon, dux Core: hi duces Oolibama filiæ Anæ uxoris Esau.
The sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah, whose mother was Anah, were ancestors of the Jeush, Jalam, and Korah people-groups.
19 Isti sunt filii Esau, et hi duces eorum: ipse est Edom.
That is the list of the sons of Esau, and the people-groups who were their descendants.
20 Isti sunt filii Seir Horræi, habitatores terræ: Lotan, et Sobal, et Sebeon, et Ana,
(This is/I will now give you) a list of the descendants of Seir, who belonged to the Hor people-group, who were the first people-group who lived in the Edom region: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,
21 et Dison, et Eser, et Disan: hi duces Horræi, filii Seir in terra Edom.
Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. Those seven men became ancestors of people-groups. Each of the people-groups had the same name as the name of their ancestor.
22 Facti sunt autem filii Lotan: Hori et Heman. Erat autem soror Lotan, Thamna.
The sons of Lotan were Hori and Heman and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
23 Et isti filii Sobal: Alvan et Manahat et Ebal, et Sepho et Onam.
The sons of Shobal were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
24 Et hi filii Sebeon: Aja et Ana. Iste est Ana qui invenit aquas calidas in solitudine, cum pasceret asinos Sebeon patris sui:
The sons of Zibeon were Aiah and Anah. This Anah was the one who discovered the hot springs in the desert while he was taking care of his father Zibeon’s donkeys.
25 habuitque filium Dison, et filiam Oolibama.
Anah had two children—a son named Dishon and a daughter named Oholibamah.
26 Et isti filii Dison: Hamdan, et Eseban, et Jethram, et Charan.
Dishon’s sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.
27 Hi quoque filii Eser: Balaan, et Zavan, et Acan.
Ezer’s sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
28 Habuit autem filios Disan: Hus et Aram.
Dishan’s sons were Uz and Aran.
29 Hi duces Horræorum: dux Lotan, dux Sobal, dux Sebeon, dux Ana,
The people-groups who were descendants of Hor lived in the Seir/Edom region. The names of the people-groups are Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan.
30 dux Dison, dux Eser, dux Disan: isti duces Horræorum qui imperaverunt in terra Seir.
31 Reges autem qui regnaverunt in terra Edom antequam haberent regem filii Israël, fuerunt hi:
These are the names of the kings who ruled in Edom before any kings ruled over Israel.
32 Bela filius Beor, nomenque urbis ejus Denaba.
Beor’s son Bela became the first king in Edom. The city where he lived was named Dinhabah.
33 Mortuus est autem Bela, et regnavit pro eo Jobab filius Zaræ de Bosra.
When Bela died, Zerah’s son Jobab/became the king. He was from Bozrah [city].
34 Cumque mortuus esset Jobab, regnavit pro eo Husam de terra Themanorum.
When Jobab died, Husham became the king. He was from the region where the Teman people-group lived.
35 Hoc quoque mortuo, regnavit pro eo Adad filius Badad, qui percussit Madian in regione Moab: et nomen urbis ejus Avith.
When Husham died, Bedad’s son Hadan became the king. Husham’s army fought the army of the Midian people-group in the Moab region and defeated them. The city where Husham lived was Avith.
36 Cumque mortuus esset Adad, regnavit pro eo Semla de Masreca.
When Hadad died, Samlah became the king. He was from Masrekah [town].
37 Hoc quoque mortuo regnavit pro eo Saul de fluvio Rohoboth.
When Samlah died, Shaul became the king. He was from Rehoboth [town] along the [Euphrates] river.
38 Cumque et hic obiisset, successit in regnum Balanan filius Achobor.
When Shaul died, Achbor’s son Baal-Hanan became king.
39 Isto quoque mortuo regnavit pro eo Adar, nomenque urbis ejus Phau: et appellabatur uxor ejus Meetabel, filia Matred filiæ Mezaab.
When Achbor’s son Baal-Hanan died, Hadad became king. The city where he lived was named Pau. His wife’s name was Mehetabel. She was the daughter of Matred, who was the daughter of Me-Zahab.
40 Hæc ergo nomina ducum Esau in cognationibus, et locis, et vocabulis suis: dux Thamna, dux Alva, dux Jetheth,
(Here is/I will now give you) a list of all the people-groups that were descendants of Esau: Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, Magdiel, and Iram. They all lived in the Edom region. The land where each people-group lived got the same name as the name of the people-group.
41 dux Oolibama, dux Ela, dux Phinon,
42 dux Cenez, dux Theman, dux Mabsar,
43 dux Magdiel, dux Hiram: hi duces Edom habitantes in terra imperii sui, ipse est Esau pater Idumæorum.
