Isaiæ 20

1 In anno, quo ingressus est Thathan in Azotum, cum misisset eum Sargon rex Assyriorum, et pugnasset contra Azotum, et cepisset eam:

In the year that Tharthan came unto Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and fought against Ashdod, and captured it;

2 in tempore illo locutus est Dominus in manu Isaiæ filii Amos, dicens: Vade, et solve saccum de lumbis tuis, et calceamenta tua tolle de pedibus tuis. Et fecit sic vadens nudus, et discalceatus.

At the same time spoke the Lord by means of Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loosen the sackcloth from off thy loins, and thy shoe shalt thou pull off from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.

3 Et dixit Dominus: Sicut ambulavit servus meus Isaias nudus, et discalceatus, trium annorum signum et portentum erit super Ægyptum, et super Æthiopiam,

And the Lord said, Just as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years as a sign and token for Egypt and for Cush:

4 sic minabit rex Assyriorum captivitatem Ægypti, et transmigrationem Æthiopiæ, iuvenum et senum, nudam et discalceatam, discoopertis natibus ad ignominiam Ægypti.

So shall the king of Assyria lead away the prisoners of Egypt, and the exiles of Cush, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with uncovered buttocks, to the disgrace of Egypt.

5 Et timebunt, et confundentur ab Æthiopia spe sua, et ab Ægypto gloria sua.

And they shall be terrified, and ashamed of Cush their trust, and of Egypt their vaunt.

6 Et dicet habitator insulæ huius in die illa: Ecce hæc erat spes nostra, ad quos confugimus in auxilium, ut liberarent nos a facie regis Assyriorum: et quomodo effugere poterimus nos?

And the inhabitant of this isle shall say on that day, Behold, such is our trust, whither we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we then escape?
