Proverbiorum 28
1 Fugit impius, nemine persequente: iustus autem quasi leo confidens, absque terrore erit.
The wicked have fled and there is no pursuer, And the righteous is confident as a young lion.
2 Propter peccata terræ multi principes eius: et propter hominis sapientiam, et horum scientiam quæ dicuntur, vita ducis longior erit.
By the transgression of a land its heads are many, And by an understanding man, Who knows right—it is prolonged.
3 Vir pauper calumnians pauperes, similis est imbri vehementi, in quo paratur fames.
A man—poor and oppressing the weak, [Is] a sweeping rain, and there is no bread.
4 Qui derelinquunt legem, laudant impium: qui custodiunt, succenduntur contra eum.
Those forsaking the Law praise the wicked, Those keeping the Law plead against them.
5 Viri mali non cogitant iudicium: qui autem inquirunt Dominum, animadvertunt omnia.
Evil men do not understand judgment, And those seeking YHWH understand all.
6 Melior est pauper ambulans in simplicitate sua, quam dives in pravis itineribus.
Better [is] the poor walking in his integrity, Than the perverse of ways who is rich.
7 Qui custodit legem, filius sapiens est: qui autem comessatores pascit, confundit patrem suum.
Whoever is keeping the Law is an intelligent son, And a friend of gluttons Causes his father to blush.
8 Qui coacervat divitias usuris et fœnore, liberali in pauperes congregat eas.
Whoever is multiplying his wealth by biting and usury, Gathers it for one favoring the poor.
9 Qui declinat aures suas ne audiat legem, oratio eius erit execrabilis.
Whoever is turning his ear from hearing the Law, Even his prayer [is] an abomination.
10 Qui decipit iustos in via mala, in interitu suo corruet: et simplices possidebunt bona eius.
Whoever is causing the upright to err in an evil way, He falls into his own pit, And the perfect inherits good.
11 Sapiens sibi videtur vir dives: pauper autem prudens scrutabitur eum.
A rich man is wise in his own eyes, And the intelligent poor searches him.
12 In exultatione iustorum multa gloria est: regnantibus impiis ruinæ hominum.
In the exulting of the righteous the glory [is] abundant, And in the rising of the wicked man is apprehensive.
13 Qui abscondit scelera sua, non dirigetur: qui autem confessus fuerit, et reliquerit ea, misericordiam consequetur.
Whoever is covering his transgressions does not prosper, And he who is confessing and forsaking has mercy.
14 Beatus homo, qui semper est pavidus: qui vero mentis est duræ, corruet in malum.
O the blessedness of a man fearing continually, And whoever is hardening his heart falls into evil.
15 Leo rugiens, et ursus esuriens, princeps impius super populum pauperem.
A growling lion, and a ranging bear, [Is] the wicked ruler over a poor people.
16 Dux indigens prudentia, multos opprimet per calumniam: qui autem odit avaritiam, longi fient dies eius.
A leader lacking understanding multiplies oppressions, Whoever is hating dishonest gain prolongs days.
17 Hominem, qui calumniatur animæ sanguinem, si usque ad lacum fugerit, nemo sustinet.
A man oppressed with the blood of a soul, Flees to the pit, [and] none takes hold on him [to help].
18 Qui ambulat simpliciter, salvus erit: qui perversis graditur viis, concidet semel.
Whoever is walking uprightly is saved, And the perverted of ways falls at once.
19 Qui operatur terram suam, satiabitur panibus: qui autem sectatur otium, replebitur egestate.
Whoever is tilling his ground is satisfied [with] bread, And whoever is pursuing vanity, Is filled [with] poverty.
20 Vir fidelis multum laudabitur: qui autem festinat ditari, non erit innocens.
A steadfast man has multiplied blessings, And whoever is hastening to be rich is not acquitted.
21 Qui cognoscit in iudicio faciem, non bene facit: iste et pro buccella panis deserit veritatem.
[It] is not good to discern faces, And a man transgresses for a piece of bread.
22 Vir, qui festinat ditari, et aliis invidet, ignorat quod egestas superveniet ei.
The man [with] an evil eye [is] troubled for wealth, And he does not know that want meets him.
23 Qui corripit hominem, gratiam postea inveniet apud eum magis quam ille, qui per linguæ blandimenta decipit.
Whoever is reproving a man finds grace afterward, More than a flatterer with the tongue.
24 Qui subtrahit aliquid a patre suo, et a matre: et dicit hoc non esse peccatum, particeps homicidæ est.
Whoever is robbing his father or his mother, And is saying, “It is not transgression,” He is a companion to a destroyer.
25 Qui se iactat, et dilatat, iurgia concitat: qui vero sperat in Domino, sanabitur.
Whoever is proud in soul stirs up contention, And whoever is trusting on YHWH is made fat.
26 Qui confidit in corde suo, stultus est: qui autem graditur sapienter, ipse salvabitur.
Whoever is trusting in his heart is a fool, And whoever is walking in wisdom is delivered.
27 Qui dat pauperi, non indigebit: qui despicit deprecantem, sustinebit penuriam.
Whoever is giving to the poor has no lack, And whoever is hiding his eyes multiplied curses.
28 Cum surrexerint impii, abscondentur homines: cum illi perierint, multiplicabuntur iusti.
A man is hidden in the rising of the wicked, And the righteous multiply in their destruction!
