Proverbiorum 10
1 Filius sapiens lætificat patrem: filius vero stultus mœstitia est matris suæ.
The Proverbs of Solomon: A wise son, maketh a glad father, but, a foolish son, is the grief of his mother.
2 Nil proderunt thesauri impietatis: iustitia vero liberabit a morte.
The treasures of lawlessness, do not profit, but, righteousness, delivereth from death.
3 Non affliget Dominus fame animam iusti, et insidias impiorum subvertet.
Yahweh, suffereth not to famish, the soul of the righteous, but, the desire of the lawless, he thrusteth away.
4 Egestatem operata est manus remissa: manus autem fortium divitias parat. Qui nititur mendaciis, hic pascit ventos: idem autem ipse sequitur aves volantes.
He becometh poor, who dealeth with a slack hand, but, the hand of the diligent, maketh rich.
5 Qui congregat in messe, filius sapiens est: qui autem stertit æstate, filius confusionis.
He that gathereth in summer, is a prudent son, he that sleepeth long in harvest, is a son causing shame.
6 Benedictio Domini super caput iusti: os autem impiorum operit iniquitas.
Blessings, are for the head of the righteous man, but, the mouth of the lawless, covereth up wrong.
7 Memoria iusti cum laudibus: et nomen impiorum putrescet.
The memory of the righteous, yieldeth blessing, but, the name of the lawless, dieth out.
8 Sapiens corde præcepta suscipit: stultus cæditur labiis.
The wise in heart, will accept commandments, but, he that is foolish with his lips, shall be thrust away.
9 Qui ambulat simpliciter, ambulat confidenter: qui autem depravat vias suas, manifestus erit.
He that walketh uprightly, may walk securely, but, he that maketh crooked his ways, shall be found out.
10 Qui annuit oculo, dabit dolorem: et stultus labiis verberabitur.
He that winketh with the eye, causeth sorrow, and, he that is foolish with his lips, shall be thrust aside.
11 Vena vitæ, os iusti: et os impiorum operit iniquitatem.
A well-spring of life, is the mouth of the righteous, but, the mouth of the lawless, covereth wrong.
12 Odium suscitat rixas: et universa delicta operit charitas.
Hatred, stirreth up strifes, but, over all transgressions, love throweth a covering.
13 In labiis sapientis invenitur sapientia: et virga in dorso eius qui indiget corde.
In the lips of the intelligent, is found wisdom, but, a rod, is for the back of him that lacketh sense.
14 Sapientes abscondunt scientiam: os autem stulti confusioni proximum est.
Wise men, treasure up knowledge, but, the mouth of the foolish, is a terror near at hand.
15 Substantia divitis, urbs fortitudinis eius: pavor pauperum, egestas eorum.
The substance of the rich, is his strong city, the terror of the poor, is their poverty.
16 Opus iusti ad vitam: fructus autem impii ad peccatum.
The labour of the righteous, [leadeth] to life, the increase of the lawless, to sin.
17 Via vitæ, custodienti disciplinam: qui autem increpationes relinquit, errat.
On the way to life, is he that heedeth correction, but, he that hateth reproof, is going astray.
18 Abscondunt odium labia mendacia: qui profert contumeliam, insipiens est.
He that concealeth hatred, hath false lips, and he that sendeth forth slander, the same, is a dullard.
19 In multiloquio non deerit peccatum: qui autem moderatur labia sua prudentissimus est.
In the multitude of words, there wanteth not transgression, but, he that restraineth his lips, sheweth prudence.
20 Argentum electum, lingua iusti: cor autem impiorum pro nihilo.
Choice silver, is the tongue of the righteous, but, the sense of the lawless, is very small.
21 Labia iusti erudiunt plurimos: qui autem indocti sunt, in cordis egestate morientur.
The lips of the righteous, feed multitudes, but, the foolish, for lack of sense, shall die.
22 Benedictio Domini divites facit, nec sociabitur eis afflictio.
The blessing of Yahweh, itself maketh rich, and he addeth no grievance therewith.
23 Quasi per risum stultus operatur scelus: sapientia autem est viro prudentia.
It is, mere sport to a stupid man, to commit lewdness, but, wisdom, pertaineth to a man of understanding.
24 Quod timet impius, veniet super eum: desiderium suum iustus dabitur.
The dread of the lawless one, the same, shall overtake him, but, the desire of the righteous, shall he granted.
25 Quasi tempestas transiens non erit impius: iustus autem quasi fundamentum sempiternum.
Like the passing away of a tempest, so the lawless one is not, but, the righteous, [hath] an age-abiding foundation.
26 Sicut acetum dentibus, et fumus oculis, sic piger his, qui miserunt eum.
As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so, is the sluggard, to them who send him.
27 Timor Domini apponet dies: et anni impiorum breviabuntur.
The reverence of Yahweh, addeth days, but, the years of the lawless, shall be shortened.
28 Expectatio iustorum lætitia: spes autem impiorum peribit.
The hope of the righteous, shall be gladness, but, the expectation of the lawless, shall vanish.
29 Fortitudo simplicis via Domini: et pavor his, qui operantur malum.
A refuge for the blameless, is the path of Yahweh, but, destruction, [awaiteth] the workers of iniquity.
30 Iustus in æternum non commovebitur: impii autem non habitabunt super terram.
The righteous, to times age-abiding, shall remain unshaken, but, the lawless, shall not inhabit the earth.
31 Os iusti parturiet sapientiam: lingua pravorum peribit.
The mouth of the righteous, beareth the fruit of wisdom, but, a perverse tongue, shall be cut off.
32 Labia iusti considerant placita: et os impiorum perversa.
The lips of the righteous, know what is pleasing, but, the mouth of the lawless, [speaketh] perversities.
