Mattheum 26
1 Et factum est: cum consummasset Iesus sermones hos omnes, dixit discipulis suis:
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these saying, he said to his disciples,
2 Scitis quia post biduum Pascha fiet, et Filius hominis tradetur ut crucifigatur.
Ye know that after two days the Passover comes, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
3 Tunc congregati sunt principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi in atrium principis sacerdotum, qui dicebatur Caiphas:
Then the chief priests, and the scholars, and the elders of the people, assembled together to the courtyard of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
4 et consilium fecerunt ut Iesum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.
and they deliberated so that they might take Jesus by trickery, and kill him.
5 Dicebant autem: Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.
But they said, Not during the feast, lest an uproar develop among people.
6 Cum autem Iesus esset in Bethania in domo Simonis leprosi,
Now when Jesus happened to be in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 accessit ad eum mulier habens alabastrum unguenti pretiosi, et effudit super caput ipsius recumbentis.
a woman came to him having an alabaster cruse of precious ointment, and she poured it upon his head as he sat relaxing.
8 Videntes autem discipuli, indignati sunt dicentes: Ut quid perditio hæc?
But when his disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, Why this waste?
9 potuit enim istud venundari multo, et dari pauperibus.
For this ointment could have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
10 Sciens autem Iesus, ait illis: Quid molesti estis huic mulieri? Opus enim bonum operata est in me.
But Jesus knowing it, he said to them, Why do ye cause troubles to the woman? For she has wrought a good work upon me.
11 Nam semper pauperes habetis vobiscum: me autem non semper habetis.
For ye always have the poor with you, but ye do not always have me.
12 Mittens enim hæc unguentum hoc in corpus meum: ad sepeliendum me fecit.
For by pouring this ointment upon my body, she did it for my burial.
13 Amen dico vobis, ubicumque prædicatum fuerit hoc Evangelium in toto mundo, dicetur et quod hæc fecit in memoriam eius.
Truly I say to you, wherever this good news may be proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman did will also be told for a memorial of her.
14 Tunc abiit unus de duodecim, qui dicebatur Iudas Iscariotes, ad principes sacerdotum:
Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, having gone to the chief priests,
15 et ait illis: Quid vultis mihi dare, et ego vobis eum tradam? At illi constituerunt ei triginta argenteos.
he said, What are ye willing to give me, and I will deliver him to you? And they weighed out to him thirty silver pieces.
16 Et exinde quærebat opportunitatem ut eum traderet.
And from that time he sought a favorable opportunity so that he might betray him.
17 Prima autem die Azymorum accesserunt discipuli ad Iesum, dicentes: Ubi vis paremus tibi comedere Pascha?
Now on the first day of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where do thou want that we should prepare for thee to eat the Passover?
18 At Iesus dixit: Ite in civitatem ad quemdam, et dicite ei: Magister dicit: Tempus meum prope est, apud te facio Pascha cum discipulis meis.
And he said, Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, The teacher says, My time is near. I keep the Passover with my disciples with thee.
19 Et fecerunt discipuli sicut constituit illis Iesus, et paraverunt Pascha.
And the disciples did as Jesus arranged for them, and they prepared the Passover.
20 Vespere autem facto, discumbebat cum duodecim discipulis suis.
Now having become evening, he was sitting with the twelve.
21 Et edentibus illis, dixit: Amen dico vobis, quia unus vestrum me traditurus est.
And as they were eating, he said, Truly I say to you, that one of you will betray me.
22 Et contristati valde, cœperunt singuli dicere: Numquid ego sum Domine?
And being exceedingly sorrowful, they began, each of them, to say to him, Is it I, Lord?
23 At ipse respondens, ait: Qui intingit mecum manum in paropside, hic me tradet.
And having answered, he said, He who dipped his hand with me in the dish, this man will betray me.
24 Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de illo: væ autem homini illi, per quem Filius hominis tradetur: bonum erat ei, si natus non fuisset homo ille.
The Son of man indeed goes as it is written about him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of man is betrayed! It were good for him if that man had not been born.
25 Respondens autem Iudas, qui tradidit eum, dixit: Numquid ego sum Rabbi? Ait illi: Tu dixisti.
And Judas (the man who betrayed him) having answered, he said, Is it I, Rabbi? He says to him, Thou have said.
26 Cœnantibus autem eis, accepit Iesus panem, et benedixit, ac fregit, deditque discipulis suis, et ait: Accipite, et comedite: hoc est corpus meum.
And as they were eating, Jesus, having taken bread, having expressed thanks, broke in pieces, and he gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat, this is my body.
27 Et accipiens calicem gratias egit: et dedit illis, dicens: Bibite ex hoc omnes.
And having taken the cup, having expressed thanks, he gave to them, saying, All ye drink of it,
28 Hic est enim sanguis meus Novi Testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur in remissionem peccatorum.
for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed on behalf of many for remission of sins.
29 Dico autem vobis: non bibam amodo de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam vobiscum novum in regno Patris mei.
But I say to you, that I will, no, not drink of this fruit of the grapevine henceforth until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
30 Et hymno dicto, exierunt in Montem Oliveti.
And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives.
31 Tunc dicit illis Iesus: Omnes vos scandalum patiemini in me, in ista nocte. Scriptum est enim: Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves gregis.
Then Jesus says to them, All ye will be caused to stumble by me in this night, for it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.
32 Postquam autem resurrexero, præcedam vos in Galilæam.
But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.
33 Respondens autem Petrus, ait illi: Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te, ego numquam scandalizabor.
But having answered, Peter said to him, If all men will be caused to stumble by thee, I will never be caused to stumble.
34 Ait illi Iesus: Amen dico tibi, quia in hac nocte, antequam gallus cantet, ter me negabis.
Jesus said to him, Truly I say to thee, that in this night, before a cock sounds, thou will deny me thrice.
35 Ait illi Petrus: Etiamsi oportuerit me mori tecum, non te negabo. Similiter et omnes discipuli dixerunt.
Peter says to him, Even if I must die with thee, I will, no, not deny thee. And likewise also, said all the disciples.
36 Tunc venit Iesus cum illis in villam, quæ dicitur Gethsemani, et dixit discipulis suis: Sedete hic donec vadam illuc, et orem.
Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he says to his disciples, Sit ye here until, after going, I may pray there.
37 Et assumpto Petro, et duobus filiis Zebedæi, cœpit contristari et mœstus esse.
And having taken Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and distressed.
38 Tunc ait illis: Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem: sustinete hic, et vigilate mecum.
Then Jesus says to them, My soul is deeply grieved, as far as of death. Remain ye here and watch with me.
39 Et progressus pusillum, procidit in faciem suam, orans, et dicens: Pater mi, si possibile est, transeat a me calix iste. Verumtamen non sicut ego volo, sed sicut tu.
And having gone forward a little, he fell on his face praying, and saying, My Father, if it be possible, may this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I want, but as thou.
40 Et venit ad discipulos suos, et invenit eos dormientes, et dicit Petro: Sic non potuistis una hora vigilare mecum?
And he comes to the disciples, and finds them sleeping. And he says to Peter, So ye could not watch with me one hour.
41 Vigilate, et orate ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro autem infirma.
Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation. Truly, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42 Iterum secundo abiit, et oravit, dicens: Pater mi, si non potest hic calix transire nisi bibam illum, fiat voluntas tua.
Having gone again a second time, he prayed, saying, My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to pass from me, except I drink it, may thy will happen.
43 Et venit iterum, et invenit eos dormientes: erant enim oculi eorum gravati.
And having come again, he finds them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44 Et relictis illis, iterum abiit, et oravit tertio, eumdem sermonem dicens.
And when he left them, having gone away again, he prayed a third time, saying again the same statement.
45 Tunc venit ad discipulos suos, et dicit illis: Dormite iam, et requiescite: ecce appropinquavit hora, et Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.
Then he comes to his disciples, and says to them, Sleep what remains, and take rest. Behold, the hour has come near, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Surgite eamus: ecce appropinquavit qui me tradet.
Awake, we go. Behold, he who betrays me has come near.
47 Adhuc eo loquente, ecce Iudas unus de duodecim venit, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis, et fustibus, missi a principibus sacerdotum, et senioribus populi.
And while he was still speaking, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs from the chief priest and elders of the people.
48 Qui autem tradidit eum, dedit illis signum, dicens: Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum.
Now the man who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomever I may kiss is he. Seize him.
49 Et confestim accedens ad Iesum, dixit: Ave Rabbi. Et osculatus est eum.
And straightaway having come to Jesus, he said, Hail, Rabbi, and kissed him much.
50 Dixitque illi Iesus: Amice, ad quid venisti? Tunc accesserunt, et manus iniecerunt in Iesum, et tenuerunt eum.
And Jesus said to him, Friend, why are thou here? Then having come, they threw their hands on Jesus, and seized him.
51 Et ecce unus ex his, qui erant cum Iesu, extendens manum, exemit gladium suum, et percutiens servum principis sacerdotum amputavit auriculam eius.
And behold, one of those with Jesus, having stretched out a hand, drew his sword, and when he struck the bondman of the high priest, he cut off his ear.
52 Tunc ait illi Iesus: Converte gladium tuum in locum suum. Omnes enim, qui acceperint gladium, gladio peribunt.
Then Jesus says to him, Return thy sword into its place, for all those who take a sword will die by a sword.
53 An putas, quia non possum rogare Patrem meum, et exhibebit mihi modo plusquam duodecim legiones angelorum?
Or do thou think that I cannot now call my Father, and he will provide to me more than twelve legions of agents?
54 Quomodo ergo implebuntur Scripturæ, quia sic oportet fieri?
How then would the scriptures be fulfilled that it is necessary to happen this way?
55 In illa hora dixit Iesus turbis: Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis, et fustibus comprehendere me: quotidie apud vos sedebam docens in templo, et non me tenuistis.
In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, Did ye come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye did not seize me.
56 Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimplerentur Scripturæ prophetarum. Tunc discipuli omnes, relicto eo, fugerunt.
But all this has come to pass, so that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples fled, having forsook him.
57 At illi tenentes Iesum, duxerunt ad Caipham principem sacerdotum, ubi Scribæ et seniores convenerant.
And those who seized Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest where the scholars and the elders were assembled together.
58 Petrus autem sequebatur eum a longe, usque in atrium principis sacerdotum. Et ingressus intro, sedebat cum ministris, ut videret finem.
But Peter followed him from afar, as far as the courtyard of the high priest. And having entered inside, he sat with the subordinates to see the outcome.
59 Principes autem sacerdotum, et omne concilium quærebant falsum testimonium contra Iesum, ut eum morti traderent:
Now the chief priests and the elders and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put him to death,
60 et non invenerunt, cum multi falsi testes accessissent. Novissime autem venerunt duo falsi testes,
and they did not find it. And although many false witnesses came, they did not find it.
61 et dixerunt: Hic dixit: Possum destruere templum Dei, et post triduum reædificare illud.
But finally two false witnesses having come, they said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it by three days.
62 Et surgens princeps sacerdotum, ait illi: Nihil respondes ad ea, quæ isti adversum te testificantur?
And the high priest having stood up, he said to him, Answer thou nothing? What do these testify against thee?
63 Iesus autem tacebat. Et princeps sacerdotum ait illi: Adiuro te per Deum vivum, ut dicas nobis si tu es Christus Filius Dei.
But Jesus was silent. And having responded, the high priest said to him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou are the Christ, the Son of God.
64 Dicit illi Iesus: Tu dixisti. Verumtamen dico vobis, amodo videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei, et venientem in nubibus cæli.
Jesus says to him, Thou have said. Nevertheless I say to you, Henceforth ye will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming in the clouds of the sky.
65 Tunc princeps sacerdotum scidit vestimenta sua, dicens: Blasphemavit: quid adhuc egemus testibus? Ecce nunc audistis blasphemiam:
Then the high priest tore his garments, saying, He has blasphemed. What further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now ye heard his blasphemy.
66 Quid vobis videtur? At illi respondentes dixerunt: Reus est mortis.
What does it seem to you? Having answered, they said, He is deserving of death.
67 Tunc expuerunt in faciem eius, et colaphis eum ceciderunt, alii autem palmas in faciem eius dederunt,
Then they spat in his face and struck him with a fist. And some slapped him,
68 dicentes: Prophetiza nobis Christe, quis est qui te percussit?
saying, Prophesy to us, thou Christ. Who is he who struck thee?
69 Petrus vero sedebat foris in atrio: et accessit ad eum una ancilla, dicens: Et tu cum Iesu Galilæo eras.
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and one servant girl came to him, saying, Thou also were with Jesus the Galilean.
70 At ille negavit coram omnibus, dicens: Nescio quid dicis.
But he denied before them all, saying, I do not know what thou say.
71 Exeunte autem illo ianuam, vidit eum alia ancilla, et ait his, qui erant ibi: Et hic erat cum Iesu Nazareno.
And when he was gone out into the porch, another woman saw him, and says to them there, This man was also with Jesus the Nazarene.
72 Et iterum negavit cum iuramento: Quia non novi hominem.
And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
73 Et post pusillum accesserunt qui stabant, et dixerunt Petro: Vere et tu ex illis es: nam et loquela tua manifestum te facit.
And after a little while those who stood, having approached, said to Peter, Surely thou also are of them, for thy accent even makes thee apparent.
74 Tunc cœpit detestari, et iurare quia non novisset hominem. Et continuo gallus cantavit.
Then he began to curse vehemently and to swear, I do not know the man. And straightaway a cock sounded.
75 Et recordatus est Petrus verbi Iesu, quod dixerat: Prius quam gallus cantet, ter me negabis. Et egressus foras, flevit amare.
And Peter remembered the saying that Jesus said to him, Before a cock sounds, thou will deny me thrice. And having gone outside, he wept bitterly.
