1 Et respondens Iesus, dixit iterum in parabolis eis, dicens:
Then Iesus answered, and spake vnto them againe in parables, saying,
2 Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo.
The kingdome of heauen is like vnto a certaine King which maried his sonne,
3 Et misit servos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire.
And sent foorth his seruants, to call them that were bidde to the wedding, but they woulde not come.
4 Iterum misit alios servos, dicens: Dicite invitatis: Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri mei, et altilia occisa sunt, et omnia parata: venite ad nuptias.
Againe hee sent foorth other seruants, saying. Tell them which are bidden, Beholde, I haue prepared my dinner: mine oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all thinges are readie: come vnto the mariage.
5 Illi autem neglexerunt: et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam:
But they made light of it, and went their wayes, one to his farme, and another about his marchandise.
6 reliqui vero tenuerunt servos eius, et contumeliis affectos occiderunt.
And the remnant tooke his seruants, and intreated them sharpely, and slewe them.
7 Rex autem cum audisset, iratus est: et missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos, et civitatem illorum succendit.
But when the King heard it, he was wroth, and sent foorth his warriers, and destroyed those murtherers, and burnt vp their citie.
8 Tunc ait servis suis: Nuptiæ quidem paratæ sunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni.
Then saide hee to his seruants, Truely the wedding is prepared: but they which were bidden, were not worthy.
9 Ite ergo ad exitus viarum, et quoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias.
Go ye therefore out into the high wayes, and as many as ye finde, bid them to the mariage.
10 Et egressi servi eius in vias, congregaverunt omnes, quos invenerunt, malos et bonos: et impletæ sunt nuptiæ discumbentium.
So those seruantes went out into the hie wayes, and gathered together all that euer they found, both good and bad: so the wedding was furnished with ghestes.
11 Intravit autem rex ut viderent discumbentes, et vidit ibi hominem non vestitum veste nuptiali.
Then the King came in, to see the ghestes, and sawe there a man which had not on a wedding garment.
12 Et ait illi: Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem? At ille obmutuit.
And he sayd vnto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither, and hast not on a wedding garment? And he was speachlesse.
13 Tunc dicit rex ministris: Ligatis manibus, et pedibus eius, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores: ibi erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
Then sayd the King to the seruants, Binde him hand and foote: take him away, and cast him into vtter darkenes: there shalbe weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14 Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.
For many are called, but fewe chosen.
15 Tunc abeuntes Pharisæi, consilium inierunt ut caperent eum in sermone.
Then went the Pharises and tooke counsell how they might tangle him in talke.
16 Et mittunt ei discipulos suos cum Herodianis dicentes: Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo: non enim respicis personam hominum:
And they sent vnto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we knowe that thou art true, and teachest the way of God truely, neither carest for any man: for thou considerest not the person of men.
17 dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur? licet censum dare Cæsari, an non?
Tell vs therefore, how thinkest thou? Is it lawfull to giue tribute vnto Cesar, or not?
18 Cognita autem Iesus nequitia eorum, ait: Quid me tentatis hypocritæ?
But Iesus perceiued their wickednes, and sayd, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Ostendite mihi numisma census. At illi obtulerunt ei denarium.
Shewe me the tribute money. And they brought him a peny.
20 Et ait illis Iesus: Cuius est imago hæc, et superscriptio?
And he sayde vnto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 Dicunt ei: Cæsaris. Tunc ait illis: Reddite ergo quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari: et quæ sunt Dei, Deo.
They sayd vnto him, Cesars. Then sayd he vnto them, Giue therefore to Cesar, the things which are Cesars, and giue vnto God, those things which are Gods.
22 Et audientes mirati sunt, et relicto eo abierunt.
And when they heard it, they marueiled, and left him, and went their way.
23 In illo die accesserunt ad eum Sadducæi, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem: et interrogaverunt eum,
The same day the Sadduces came to him (which say that there is no resurrection) and asked him,
24 dicentes: Magister, Moyses dixit: Si quis mortuus fuerit non habens filium, ut ducat frater eius uxorem illius, et suscitet semen fratri suo.
Saying, Master, Moses sayd, If a man die, hauing no children, his brother shall marie his wife by the right of alliance, and raise vp seede vnto his brother.
25 Erant autem apud nos septem fratres: et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est: et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo.
Nowe there were with vs seuen brethren, and the first maried a wife, and deceased: and hauing none yssue, left his wife vnto his brother.
26 Similiter secundus, et tertius usque ad septimum.
Likewise also the second, and the third, vnto the seuenth.
27 Novissime autem omnium et mulier defuncta est.
And last of all the woman died also.
28 In resurrectione ergo cuius erit de septem uxor? omnes enim habuerunt eam.
Therefore in the resurrection, whose wife shall she be of the seuen? for all had her.
29 Respondens autem Iesus, ait illis: Erratis nescientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei.
Then Iesus answered, and sayd vnto them, Ye are deceiued, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur: sed erunt sicut Angeli Dei in cælo.
For in the resurrection they neither marie wiues, nor wiues are bestowed in mariage, but are as the Angels of God in heauen.
31 De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis quod dictum est a Deo dicente vobis:
And concerning the resurrection of the dead, haue ye not read what is spoken vuto you of God, saying,
32 Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Iacob? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium.
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the liuing.
33 Et audientes turbæ, mirabantur in doctrina eius.
And when the multitude heard it, they were astonied at his doctrine.
34 Pharisæi autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset Sadducæis, convenerunt in unum:
But when the Pharises had heard, that he had put the Sadduces to silence, they assembled together.
35 et interrogavit eum unus ex eis legis doctor, tentans eum:
And one of them, which was an expounder of the Lawe, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege?
Master, which is ye great commandement in the Lawe?
37 Ait illi Iesus: Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua.
Iesus sayd to him, Thou shalt loue the Lord thy God with all thine heart, with all thy soule, and with all thy minde.
38 Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum.
This is the first and the great commandement.
39 Secundum autem simile est huic: Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum.
And the second is like vnto this, Thou shalt loue thy neighbour as thy selfe.
40 In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetæ.
On these two commandements hangeth the whole Lawe, and the Prophets.
41 Congregatis autem Pharisæis, interrogavit eos Iesus,
While the Pharises were gathered together, Iesus asked them,
42 dicens: Quid vobis videtur de Christo? cuius filius est? Dicunt ei: David.
Saying, What thinke ye of Christ? whose sonne is he? They sayd vnto him, Dauids.
43 Ait illis: Quomodo ergo David in Spiritu vocat eum Dominum, dicens:
He sayd vnto them, How then doeth Dauid in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 Dixit Dominus Domino meo: sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum?
The Lord sayd to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footestoole?
45 Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius eius est?
If then Dauid call him Lord, howe is he his sonne?
46 Et nemo poterat ei respondere verbum: neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum amplius interrogare.
And none could answere him a worde, neither durst any from that day foorth aske him any moe questions.
