1 Et factum est, cum consummasset Iesus, præcipiens duodecim discipulis suis, transiit inde ut doceret, et prædicaret in civitatibus eorum.
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he passed on from thence, to be teaching and proclaiming in their cities.
2 Ioannes autem cum audisset in vinculis opera Christi, mittens duos de discipulis suis,
Now, John, hearing in the prison the works of the Christ, sending through his disciples,
3 ait illi: Tu es, qui venturus es, an alium expectamus?
said unto him, Art, thou, the coming one? or, a different one, are we to expect?
4 Et respondens Iesus ait illis: Euntes renunciate Ioanni quæ audistis, et vidistis.
And, answering, Jesus said unto them—Go report unto John what ye do hear and see: —
5 Cæci vident, claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur, surdi audiunt, mortui resurgunt, pauperes evangelizantur:
The, blind, recover sight, and, the lame, walk, lepers, are cleansed, and, the deaf, hear, —and, the dead, are raised, and, the destitute, are told the joyful tidings;
6 et beatus est, qui non fuerit scandalizatus in me.
And, happy, is he, whosoever shall not find cause of stumbling, in me.
7 Illis autem abeuntibus, cœpit Iesus dicere ad turbas de Ioanne: Quid existis in desertum videre? arundinem vento agitatem?
But, as these were going their way, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes, concerning John, —What went ye forth into the wilderness to gaze at? A reed, by a wind, shaken?
8 Sed quid existis videre? hominem mollibus vestitum? Ecce qui mollibus vestiuntur, in domibus regum sunt.
But what went ye forth to see? A man, in soft clothing, arrayed? Lo! they who soft clothing do wear, are in the houses of kings.
9 Sed quid existis videre? prophetam? Etiam dico vobis, et plus quam prophetam.
But why went ye forth? A prophet, to see? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
10 Hic est enim, de quo scriptum est: Ecce ego mitto Angelum meum ante faciem tuam, qui præparabit viam tuam ante te.
This, is he, concerning whom it is written, —Lo! I, send my messenger before thy face, who shall make ready thy way before thee!
11 Amen dico vobis, non surrexit inter natos mulierum maior Ioanne Baptista: qui autem minor est in regno cælorum, maior est illo.
Verily, I say unto you—There hath not arisen, among such as are born of women, a greater than John the Immerser, —yet, he that is less in the kingdom of the heavens, is, greater than he.
12 A diebus autem Ioannis Baptistæ usque nunc, regnum cælorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.
But, from the days of John the Immerser, until even now, the kingdom of the heavens, is being invaded, and, invaders, are, seizing upon it.
13 Omnes enim prophetæ, et lex usque ad Ioannem prophetaverunt:
For, all the prophets and the law, until John, did prophesy;
14 et si vultis recipere, ipse est Elias, qui venturus est.
And, if ye are willing to accept it, he, is Elijah—the one destined to come.
15 Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
He that hath ears, let him hear!
16 Cui autem similem æstimabo generationem istam? Similis est pueris sedentibus in foro: qui clamantes coæqualibus
But, unto what, shall I liken this generation? It is, like, unto children, sitting the market-places, who, calling unto the others,
17 dicunt: Cecinimus vobis, et non saltastis: lamentavimus, et non planxistis.
say, We played the flute to you, and ye danced not, —we sang a lament, and ye beat not the breast.
18 Venit enim Ioannes neque manducans, neque bibens, et dicunt: Dæmonium habet.
For, John, came, neither eating nor drinking, and they say—A demon, he hath!
19 Venit Filius hominis manducans, et bibens, et dicunt: Ecce homo vorax, et potator vini, publicanorum, et peccatorum amicus. Et iustificata est sapientia a filiis suis.
The Son of Man, came, eating and drinking, and they say, Lo! a gluttonous man and a wine-drinker! a friend of, tax-collectors, and sinners! And yet wisdom hath been justified by her works.
20 Tunc cœpit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factæ sunt plurimæ virtutes eius, quia non egissent pœnitentiam.
Then, began he to upbraid the cities, in which had been done his noblest mighty works; because they repented not: —
21 Væ tibi Corozain, væ tibi Bethsaida: quia, si in Tyro, et Sidone factæ essent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio, et cinere pœnitentiam egissent.
Alas for thee, Chorazin! Alas for thee, Bethsaida! Because, if, in Tyre and Zidon, had been done the works of power, which were done in you, of old, in sackcloth and ashes, had they repented.
22 Verumtamen dico vobis: Tyro, et Sidoni remissius erit in die iudicii, quam vobis.
Moreover, I say unto you, For Tyre and Zidon, more tolerable, will it be, in the day of judgment, than for you.
23 Et tu Capharnaum, numquid usque in cælum exaltaberis? usque in infernum descendes. Quia, si in Sodomis factæ fuissent virtutes, quæ factæ sunt in te, forte mansissent usque in hanc diem. (Hadēs g86)
And, thou, Capernaum! Unto heaven, shalt thou be uplifted? Unto hades, thou shall be brought down; because, if, in Sodom, had been done the works of power, which were done in thee, it would, in that case, have remained until this day. (Hadēs g86)
24 Verumtamen dico vobis, quia terræ Sodomorum remissius erit in die iudicii, quam tibi.
Moreover, I say unto you—For the land of Sodom, more tolerable, will it be in a day of judgment, than, for thee.
25 In illo tempore respondens Iesus dixit: Confiteor tibi, Pater, Domine cæli et terræ, quia abscondisti hæc a sapientibus, et prudentibus, et revelasti ea parvulis.
In that season, answered Jesus, and said—I openly give praise unto thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, —in that thou hast hid these things from the wise and discerning, and hast revealed them unto babes;
26 Ita Pater: quoniam sic fuit placitum ante te.
Yea, O Father! That, so, it hath become, a delight, before thee.
27 Omnia mihi tradita sunt a Patre meo. Et nemo novit Filium, nisi Pater: neque Patrem quis novit, nisi Filius, et cui voluerit Filius revelare.
All things, unto me, have been delivered up by my Father; and, no one, fully knoweth the Son, save the rather, neither doth any one fully know, the Father, save, the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son, may be minded, to reveal, him.
28 Venite ad me omnes, qui laboratis, et onerati estis, et ego reficiam vos.
Come unto me! all ye that toil and are burdened, and, I, will give you rest:
29 Tollite iugum meum super vos, et discite a me, quia mitis sum, et humilis corde: et invenietis requiem animabus vestris.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, —because, meek, am I and lowly, in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls;
30 Iugum enim meum suave est, et onus meum leve.
For, my yoke, is easy, and, my burden, light.
