< Marcum 9 >
1 Et dicebat illis: Amen dico vobis, quia sunt quidam de hic stantibus, qui non gustabunt mortem donec videant regnum Dei veniens in virtute.
And he said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will certainly not taste death until they see the kingdom of God come with power.”
2 Et post dies sex assumit Iesus Petrum, et Iacobum, et Ioannem: et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum solos, et transfiguratus est coram ipsis.
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them.
3 Et vestimenta eius facta sunt splendentia, et candida nimis velut nix, qualia fullo non potest super terram candida facere.
His garments became radiant and extremely white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth could whiten them.
4 Et apparuit illis Elias cum Moyse: et erant loquentes cum Iesu.
Then Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
5 Et respondens Petrus, ait Iesu: Rabbi, bonum est nos hic esse: et faciamus tria tabernacula, Tibi unum, et Moysi unum, et Eliæ unum.
So Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters, one for yoʋ, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
6 Non enim sciebat quid diceret: erant enim timore exterriti:
(For they were terrified, and he did not know what to say.)
7 Et facta est nubes obumbrans eos: et venit vox de nube, dicens: Hic est Filius meus charissimus: audite illum.
Then a cloud came and overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him!”
8 Et statim circumspicientes, neminem amplius viderunt, nisi Iesum tantum secum.
And suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus.
9 Et descendentibus illis de monte, præcepit illis ne cuiquam quæ vidissent, narrarent: nisi cum Filius hominis a mortuis resurrexerit.
As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10 Et verbum continuerunt apud se: conquirentes quid esset: Cum a mortuis resurrexerit.
So they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what this “rising from the dead” could mean.
11 Et interrogabant eum, dicentes: Quid ergo dicunt Pharisæi, et scribæ, quia Eliam oportet venire primum?
Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
12 Qui respondens, ait illis: Elias cum venerit primo, restituet omnia: et quo modo scriptum est in Filium hominis, ut multa patiatur et contemnatur.
He answered them, “Elijah does indeed come first to restore all things. How then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
13 Sed dico vobis quia et Elias venit (et fecerunt illi quæcumque voluerunt) sicut scriptum est de eo.
But I tell you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”
14 Et veniens ad discipulos suos, vidit turbam magnam circa eos, et scribas conquirentes cum illis.
When Jesus came back to the other disciples, he saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.
15 Et confestim omnis populus videns Iesum, stupefactus est, et expaverunt, et accurrentes salutabant eum.
When the whole crowd saw him, they were greatly amazed and immediately ran up and greeted him.
16 Et interrogavit eos: Quid inter vos conquiritis?
Then he asked the scribes, “What are you arguing with them about?”
17 Et respondens unus de turba, dixit: Magister, attuli filium meum ad te habentem spiritum mutum:
One man from among the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought yoʋ my son, who has a spirit that makes him mute.
18 qui ubicumque eum apprehenderit, allidit illum, et spumat, et stridet dentibus, et arescit: et dixi discipulis tuis ut eiicerent illum, et non potuerunt.
Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked yoʋr disciples to cast it out, but they were not able to do so.”
19 Qui respondens eis, dixit: O generatio incredula, quamdiu apud vos ero? Quamdiu vos patiar? Afferte illum ad me.
Jesus answered him, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.”
20 Et attulerunt eum. Et cum vidisset eum, statim spiritus conturbavit illum: et elisus in terram, volutabatur spumans.
So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into convulsions, and he fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
21 Et interrogavit patrem eius: Quantum temporis est ex quo ei hoc accidit? At ille ait: Ab infantia:
Then Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has this been happening to him?” The father said, “From childhood.
22 et frequenter eum in ignem, et in aquas misit ut eum perderet. Sed si quid potes, adiuva nos, misertus nostri.
It often throws him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him. But if yoʋ are able to do anything, help us and have compassion on us.”
23 Iesus autem ait illi: Si potes credere, omnia possibilia sunt credenti.
Jesus said to him, “The question is whether yoʋ are able to believe. All things are possible for the one who believes.”
24 Et continuo exclamans pater pueri, cum lacrymis aiebat: Credo, Domine: adiuva incredulitatem meam.
Immediately the child's father cried out and said with tears, “I believe, Lord; help my unbelief!”
25 Et cum videret Iesus concurrentem turbam, comminatus est spiritui immundo, dicens illi: Surde, et mute spiritus, ego præcipio tibi, exi ab eo: et amplius ne introeas in eum.
When Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it, “Yoʋ spirit that makes this boy mute and deaf, I command yoʋ, come out of him and never enter him again!”
26 Et exclamans, et multum discerpens eum, exiit ab eo, et factus est sicut mortuus, ita ut multi dicerent: Quia mortuus est.
After crying out, the spirit convulsed the boy greatly and came out, and the boy became as though he were dead, so that many said, “He is dead!”
27 Iesus autem tenens manum eius, elevavit eum, et surrexit.
But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up, and the boy arose.
28 Et cum introisset in domum, discipuli eius secreto interrogabant eum: Quare nos non potuimus eiicere eum?
Now when Jesus came into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”
29 Et dixit illis: Hoc genus in nullo potest exire, nisi in oratione, et ieiunio.
He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer and fasting.”
30 Et inde profecti prætergrediebantur Galilæam: nec volebat quemquam scire.
Then they went away from there and passed through Galilee, but Jesus did not want anyone to know it.
31 Docebat autem discipulos suos, et dicebat illis: Quoniam filius hominis tradetur in manus hominum, et occident eum, et occisus tertia die resurget.
For he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered up into the hands of men, and they will kill him. Yet after he has been killed, he will rise on the third day.”
32 At illi ignorabant verbum: et timebant interrogare eum.
But they did not understand what this meant, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
33 Et venerunt Capharnaum. Qui cum domi essent, interrogabat eos: Quid in via tractabatis?
Then Jesus came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house, he asked the disciples, “What were you discussing among yourselves on the way?”
34 At illi tacebant. Siquidem in via inter se disputaverunt, quis eorum maior esset.
But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was greater.
35 Et residens vocavit duodecim, et ait illis: Si quis vult primus esse, erit omnium novissimus, et omnium minister.
So Jesus sat down, called the twelve over, and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and a servant to all.”
36 Et accipiens puerum, statuit eum in medio eorum: quem cum complexus esset, ait illis:
Then he took a child and placed him before them. And taking the child in his arms, he said to them,
37 Quisquis unum ex huiusmodi pueris receperit in nomine meo, me recipit: et quicumque me susceperit, non me suscipit, sed eum, qui misit me.
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me, but him who sent me.”
38 Respondit illi Ioannes, dicens: Magister, vidimus quemdam in nomine tuo eiicientem dæmonia, qui non sequitur nos, et prohibuimus eum.
John said to him in response, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in yoʋr name, and we told him to stop because he does not follow us.”
39 Iesus autem ait: Nolite prohibere eum. Nemo est enim qui faciat virtutem in nomine meo, et possit cito male loqui de me.
But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a miracle in my name will be able to speak evil of me soon afterward.
40 Qui enim non est adversum vos, pro vobis est.
For whoever is not against you is for you.
41 Quisquis enim potum dederit vobis calicem aquæ in nomine meo, quia Christi estis: Amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam.
Truly I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ, will certainly not lose his reward.
42 Et quisquis scandalizaverit unum ex his pusillis credentibus in me: bonum est ei magis si circumdaretur mola asinaria collo eius, et in mare mitteretur.
“If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
43 Et si scandalizaverit te manus tua, abscide illam: bonum est tibi debilem introire in vitam, quam duas manus habentem ire in Gehennam, in ignem inextinguibilem: (Geenna )
If yoʋr hand causes yoʋ to stumble, cut it off. It is better for yoʋ to enter life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, (Geenna )
44 ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.
‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
45 Et si pes tuus te scandalizat, amputa illum: bonum est tibi claudum introire in vitam æternam, quam duos pedes habentem mitti in gehennam ignis inextinguibilis: (Geenna )
And if yoʋr foot causes yoʋ to stumble, cut it off. It is better for yoʋ to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell, into the unquenchable fire, (Geenna )
46 ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.
‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
47 Quod si oculus tuus scandalizat te, eiice eum: bonum est tibi luscum introire in regnum Dei, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis: (Geenna )
And if yoʋr eye causes yoʋ to stumble, tear it out. It is better for yoʋ to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fires of hell, (Geenna )
48 ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.
‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
49 Omnis enim igne salietur, et omnis victima sale salietur.
For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.
50 Bonum est sal: quod si sal insulsum fuerit: in quo illud condietis? Habete in vobis sal, et pacem habete inter vos.
Salt is good, but if it becomes unsalty, with what shall you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
