< Psalmorum 114 >
1 Alleluja. [In exitu Israël de Ægypto, domus Jacob de populo barbaro,
When Israel [God prevails] went out of Egypt [Abode of slavery], the house of Jacob [Supplanter] from a people of foreign language;
2 facta est Judæa sanctificatio ejus; Israël potestas ejus.
Judah [Praised] became his sanctuary, Israel [God prevails] his dominion.
3 Mare vidit, et fugit; Jordanis conversus est retrorsum.
The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan [Descender] was driven back.
4 Montes exsultaverunt ut arietes, et colles sicut agni ovium.
The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs.
5 Quid est tibi, mare, quod fugisti? et tu, Jordanis, quia conversus es retrorsum?
What was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan [Descender], that you turned back?
6 montes, exsultastis sicut arietes? et colles, sicut agni ovium?
You mountains, that you skipped like rams; you little hills, like lambs?
7 A facie Domini mota est terra, a facie Dei Jacob:
Tremble, you earth, at the presence of 'Adon [Lord], at the presence of the God of Jacob [Supplanter],
8 qui convertit petram in stagna aquarum, et rupem in fontes aquarum.
who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.
