Proverbiorum 3
1 [Fili mi, ne obliviscaris legis meæ, et præcepta mea cor tuum custodiat:
My son! Do not forget my law, And let your heart keep my commands,
2 longitudinem enim dierum, et annos vitæ, et pacem, apponent tibi.
For [the] length of [your] days and years, Life and peace they add to you.
3 Misericordia et veritas te non deserant; circumda eas gutturi tuo, et describe in tabulis cordis tui:
Do not let kindness and truth forsake you, Bind them on your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,
4 et invenies gratiam, et disciplinam bonam, coram Deo et hominibus.
And find grace and good understanding In the eyes of God and man.
5 Habe fiduciam in Domino ex toto corde tuo, et ne innitaris prudentiæ tuæ.
Trust to YHWH with all your heart, And do not lean to your own understanding.
6 In omnibus viis tuis cogita illum, et ipse diriget gressus tuos.
In all your ways know Him, And He makes your paths straight.
7 Ne sis sapiens apud temetipsum; time Deum, et recede a malo:
Do not be wise in your own eyes, Fear YHWH, and turn aside from evil.
8 sanitas quippe erit umbilico tuo, et irrigatio ossium tuorum.
It is healing to your navel, And moistening to your bones.
9 Honora Dominum de tua substantia, et de primitiis omnium frugum tuarum da ei:
Honor YHWH from your substance, And from the beginning of all your increase;
10 et implebuntur horrea tua saturitate, et vino torcularia tua redundabunt.]
And your barns are filled [with] plenty, And your presses break forth [with] new wine.
11 [Disciplinam Domini, fili mi, ne abjicias, nec deficias cum ab eo corriperis:
Discipline of YHWH, my son, do not despise, And do not be distressed with His reproof,
12 quem enim diligit Dominus, corripit, et quasi pater in filio complacet sibi.
For whom YHWH loves He reproves, Even as a father the son He is pleased with.
13 Beatus homo qui invenit sapientiam, et qui affluit prudentia.
O the blessedness of a man [who] has found wisdom, And of a man [who] brings forth understanding.
14 Melior est acquisitio ejus negotiatione argenti, et auri primi et purissimi fructus ejus.
For better [is] her merchandise Than the merchandise of silver, And than gold—her increase.
15 Pretiosior est cunctis opibus, et omnia quæ desiderantur huic non valent comparari.
She [is] precious above rubies, And all your pleasures are not comparable to her.
16 Longitudo dierum in dextera ejus, et in sinistra illius divitiæ et gloria.
Length of days [is] in her right hand, In her left [are] wealth and honor.
17 Viæ ejus viæ pulchræ, et omnes semitæ illius pacificæ.
Her ways [are] ways of pleasantness, And all her paths [are] peace.
18 Lignum vitæ est his qui apprehenderint eam, et qui tenuerit eam beatus.
She [is] a tree of life to those laying hold on her, And whoever is retaining her [is] blessed.
19 Dominus sapientia fundavit terram; stabilivit cælos prudentia.
YHWH founded the earth by wisdom, He prepared the heavens by understanding.
20 Sapientia illius eruperunt abyssi, et nubes rore concrescunt.]
By His knowledge depths have been broken, And clouds drop dew.
21 [Fili mi, ne effluant hæc ab oculis tuis. Custodi legem atque consilium,
My son! Do not let them turn from your eyes, Keep wisdom and thoughtfulness,
22 et erit vita animæ tuæ, et gratia faucibus tuis.
And they are life to your soul, and grace to your neck.
23 Tunc ambulabis fiducialiter in via tua, et pes tuus non impinget.
Then you go your way confidently, And your foot does not stumble.
24 Si dormieris, non timebis; quiesces, et suavis erit somnus tuus.
If you lie down, you are not afraid, Indeed, you have lain down, And your sleep has been sweet.
25 Ne paveas repentino terrore, et irruentes tibi potentias impiorum.
Do not be afraid of sudden fear, And of the desolation of the wicked when it comes.
26 Dominus enim erit in latere tuo, et custodiet pedem tuum, ne capiaris.]
For YHWH is at your side, And He has kept your foot from capture.
27 [Noli prohibere benefacere eum qui potest: si vales, et ipse benefac.
Do not withhold good from its owners, When your hand [is] toward God to do [it].
28 Ne dicas amico tuo: Vade, et revertere: cras dabo tibi: cum statim possis dare.
Do not say to your friend, “Go, and return, and tomorrow I give,” When substance [is] with you.
29 Ne moliaris amico tuo malum, cum ille in te habeat fiduciam.
Do not devise evil against your neighbor, And he sitting confidently with you.
30 Ne contendas adversus hominem frustra, cum ipse tibi nihil mali fecerit.
Do not strive with a man without cause, If he has not done you evil.
31 Ne æmuleris hominem injustum, nec imiteris vias ejus:
Do not be envious of a man of violence, Nor fix on any of his ways.
32 quia abominatio Domini est omnis illusor, et cum simplicibus sermocinatio ejus.
For the perverted [is] an abomination to YHWH, And His secret counsel [is] with the upright.
33 Egestas a Domino in domo impii; habitacula autem justorum benedicentur.
The curse of YHWH [is] in the house of the wicked. And He blesses the habitation of the righteous.
34 Ipse deludet illusores, et mansuetis dabit gratiam.
If He scorns the scorners, Yet He gives grace to the humble.
35 Gloriam sapientes possidebunt; stultorum exaltatio ignominia.]
The wise inherit glory, And fools are bearing away shame!
