Iohannem 9
1 Et præteriens Jesus vidit hominem cæcum a nativitate:
Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,
2 et interrogaverunt eum discipuli ejus: Rabbi, quis peccavit, hic, aut parentes ejus, ut cæcus nasceretur?
and His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 Respondit Jesus: Neque hic peccavit, neque parentes ejus: sed ut manifestentur opera Dei in illo.
Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God would be displayed in him.
4 Me oportet operari opera ejus qui misit me, donec dies est: venit nox, quando nemo potest operari:
While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 quamdiu sum in mundo, lux sum mundi.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 Hæc cum dixisset, exspuit in terram, et fecit lutum ex sputo, et linivit lutum super oculos ejus,
When Jesus had said this, He spit on the ground, made some mud, and applied it to the man’s eyes.
7 et dixit ei: Vade, lava in natatoria Siloë (quod interpretatur Missus). Abiit ergo, et lavit, et venit videns.
Then He told him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing.
8 Itaque vicini, et qui viderant eum prius quia mendicus erat, dicebant: Nonne hic est qui sedebat, et mendicabat? Alii dicebant: Quia hic est.
At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging began to ask, “Isn’t this the man who used to sit and beg?”
9 Alii autem: Nequaquam, sed similis est ei. Ille vero dicebat: Quia ego sum.
Some claimed that he was, but others said, “No, he just looks like him.” But the man kept saying, “I am the one.”
10 Dicebant ergo ei: Quomodo aperti sunt tibi oculi?
“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 Respondit: Ille homo qui dicitur Jesus, lutum fecit: et unxit oculos meos, et dixit mihi: Vade ad natatoria Siloë, et lava. Et abii, et lavi, et video.
He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.”
12 Et dixerunt ei: Ubi est ille? Ait: Nescio.
“Where is He?” they asked. “I do not know,” he answered.
13 Adducunt eum ad pharisæos, qui cæcus fuerat.
They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 Erat autem sabbatum quando lutum fecit Jesus, et aperuit oculos ejus.
Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
15 Iterum ergo interrogabant eum pharisæi quomodo vidisset. Ille autem dixit eis: Lutum mihi posuit super oculos, et lavi, et video.
So the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. The man answered, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
16 Dicebant ergo ex pharisæis quidam: Non est hic homo a Deo, qui sabbatum non custodit. Alii autem dicebant: Quomodo potest homo peccator hæc signa facere? Et schisma erat inter eos.
Because of this, some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was division among them.
17 Dicunt ergo cæco iterum: Tu quid dicis de illo qui aperuit oculos tuos? Ille autem dixit: Quia propheta est.
So once again they asked the man who had been blind, “What do you say about Him, since it was your eyes He opened?” “He is a prophet,” the man replied.
18 Non crediderunt ergo Judæi de illo, quia cæcus fuisset et vidisset, donec vocaverunt parentes ejus, qui viderat:
The Jews still did not believe that the man had been blind and had received his sight until they summoned his parents
19 et interrogaverunt eos, dicentes: Hic est filius vester, quem vos dicitis quia cæcus natus est? quomodo ergo nunc videt?
and asked, “Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he can now see?”
20 Responderunt eis parentes ejus, et dixerunt: Scimus quia hic est filius noster, et quia cæcus natus est:
His parents answered, “We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.
21 quomodo autem nunc videat, nescimus: aut quis ejus aperuit oculos, nos nescimus; ipsum interrogate: ætatem habet, ipse de se loquatur.
But how he can now see or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.”
22 Hæc dixerunt parentes ejus, quoniam timebant Judæos: jam enim conspiraverunt Judæi, ut si quis eum confiteretur esse Christum, extra synagogam fieret.
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already determined that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
23 Propterea parentes ejus dixerunt: Quia ætatem habet, ipsum interrogate.
That was why his parents said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”
24 Vocaverunt ergo rursum hominem qui fuerat cæcus, et dixerunt ei: Da gloriam Deo: nos scimus quia hic homo peccator est.
So a second time they called for the man who had been blind and said, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”
25 Dixit ergo eis ille: Si peccator est, nescio; unum scio, quia cæcus cum essem, modo video.
He answered, “Whether He is a sinner I do not know. There is one thing I do know: I was blind, but now I see!”
26 Dixerunt ergo illi: Quid fecit tibi? quomodo aperuit tibi oculos?
“What did He do to you?” they asked. “How did He open your eyes?”
27 Respondit eis: Dixi vobis jam, et audistis: quod iterum vultis audire? numquid et vos vultis discipuli ejus fieri?
He replied, “I already told you, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”
28 Maledixerunt ergo ei, et dixerunt: Tu discipulus illius sis: nos autem Moysi discipuli sumus.
Then they heaped insults on him and said, “You are His disciple; we are disciples of Moses.
29 Nos scimus quia Moysi locutus est Deus; hunc autem nescimus unde sit.
We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”
30 Respondit ille homo, et dixit eis: In hoc enim mirabile est quia vos nescitis unde sit, et aperuit meos oculos:
“That is remarkable indeed!” the man said. “You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.
31 scimus autem quia peccatores Deus non audit: sed si quis Dei cultor est, et voluntatem ejus facit, hunc exaudit.
We know that God does not listen to sinners, but He does listen to the one who worships Him and does His will.
Never before has anyone heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. (aiōn g165)
33 Nisi esset hic a Deo, non poterat facere quidquam.
If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”
34 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: In peccatis natus es totus, et tu doces nos? Et ejecerunt eum foras.
They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.
35 Audivit Jesus quia ejecerunt eum foras: et cum invenisset eum, dixit ei: Tu credis in Filium Dei?
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
36 Respondit ille, et dixit: Quis est, Domine, ut credam in eum?
“Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”
37 Et dixit ei Jesus: Et vidisti eum, et qui loquitur tecum, ipse est.
“You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”
38 At ille ait: Credo, Domine. Et procidens adoravit eum.
“Lord, I believe,” he said. And he worshiped Jesus.
39 Et dixit Jesus: In judicium ego in hunc mundum veni: ut qui non vident videant, et qui vident cæci fiant.
Then Jesus declared, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind may see and those who see may become blind.”
40 Et audierunt quidam ex pharisæis qui cum ipso erant, et dixerunt ei: Numquid et nos cæci sumus?
Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this, and they asked Him, “Are we blind too?”
41 Dixit eis Jesus: Si cæci essetis, non haberetis peccatum. Nunc vero dicitis, Quia videmus: peccatum vestrum manet.
“If you were blind,” Jesus replied, “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”
