Iohannem 4
1 Ut ergo cognovit Jesus quia audierunt pharisæi quod Jesus plures discipulos facit, et baptizat, quam Joannes
Now when the Lord learned that the Pharisees heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John
2 (quamquam Jesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli ejus),
(although it was not Jesus himself who baptized them, but his disciples),
3 reliquit Judæam, et abiit iterum in Galilæam.
he left Judea and went away to Galilee.
4 Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam.
But he had to pass through Samaria.
5 Venit ergo in civitatem Samariæ, quæ dicitur Sichar, juxta prædium quod dedit Jacob Joseph filio suo.
So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
6 Erat autem ibi fons Jacob. Jesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere, sedebat sic supra fontem. Hora erat quasi sexta.
Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from the journey, sat by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam. Dicit ei Jesus: Da mihi bibere.
When a woman from Samaria came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give me some water to drink.”
8 (Discipuli enim ejus abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.)
(For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.)
9 Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana: Quomodo tu, Judæus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quæ sum mulier Samaritana? non enim coutuntur Judæi Samaritanis.
So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that yoʋ, a Jew, ask for water to drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Si scires donum Dei, et quis est qui dicit tibi: Da mihi bibere, tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam.
Jesus answered her, “If yoʋ knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to yoʋ, ‘Give me some water to drink,’ yoʋ would have asked him, and he would have given yoʋ living water.”
11 Dicit ei mulier: Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est: unde ergo habes aquam vivam?
The woman said to him, “Sir, yoʋ do not even have a bucket to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then can yoʋ get this living water?
12 Numquid tu major es patre nostro Jacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, et filii ejus, et pecora ejus?
Are yoʋ greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock?”
13 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Omnis qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum;
Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will thirst again,
15 Dicit ad eum mulier: Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam, neque veniam huc haurire.
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty again and have to come here to draw water.”
16 Dicit ei Jesus: Vade, voca virum tuum, et veni huc.
Jesus said to her, “Go call yoʋr husband and come back here.”
17 Respondit mulier, et dixit: Non habeo virum. Dicit ei Jesus: Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum;
The woman said in response, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Yoʋ have rightly said, ‘I have no husband,’
18 quinque enim viros habuisti, et nunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir: hoc vere dixisti.
for yoʋ have had five husbands, and the man yoʋ now have is not yoʋr husband; what yoʋ have said is true.”
19 Dicit ei mulier: Domine, video quia propheta es tu.
The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that yoʋ are a prophet.
20 Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis, quia Jerosolymis est locus ubi adorare oportet.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 Dicit ei Jesus: Mulier, crede mihi, quia venit hora, quando neque in monte hoc, neque in Jerosolymis adorabitis Patrem.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, an hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
22 Vos adoratis quod nescitis: nos adoramus quod scimus, quia salus ex Judæis est.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
23 Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate. Nam et Pater tales quærit, qui adorent eum.
But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to worship him.
24 Spiritus est Deus: et eos qui adorant eum, in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 Dicit ei mulier: Scio quia Messias venit (qui dicitur Christus): cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annuntiabit omnia.
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Dicit ei Jesus: Ego sum, qui loquor tecum.
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to yoʋ am he.”
27 Et continuo venerunt discipuli ejus, et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. Nemo tamen dixit: Quid quæris? aut, Quid loqueris cum ea?
Just then his disciples came back, and they were amazed that he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, “What do yoʋ want?” or, “Why are yoʋ speaking with her?”
28 Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier, et abiit in civitatem, et dicit illis hominibus:
Then the woman left her water jar, went into the town, and said to the people,
29 Venite, et videte hominem qui dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci: numquid ipse est Christus?
“Come see a man who told me everything I have ever done. Could this be the Christ?”
30 Exierunt ergo de civitate et veniebant ad eum.
So they left the town and began coming to him.
31 Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes: Rabbi, manduca.
In the meantime the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 Ille autem dicit eis: Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis.
But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
33 Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem: Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare?
So the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”
34 Dicit eis Jesus: Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem ejus qui misit me, ut perficiam opus ejus.
Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.
35 Nonne vos dicitis quod adhuc quatuor menses sunt, et messis venit? Ecce dico vobis: levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones, quia albæ sunt jam ad messem.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and see that the fields are already ripe for harvest.
36 Et qui metit, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam æternam: ut et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit. (aiōnios g166)
He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
37 In hoc enim est verbum verum: quia alius est qui seminat, et alius est qui metit.
For in this the true saying is verified: ‘One sows and another reaps.’
38 Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis: alii laboraverunt, et vos in labores eorum introistis.
I sent you to reap what you have not labored for; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis: Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci.
Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman's testimony: “He told me everything I have ever done.”
40 Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret. Et mansit ibi duos dies.
So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there for two days.
41 Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem ejus.
And many more believed because of his word.
42 Et mulieri dicebant: Quia jam non propter tuam loquelam credimus: ipsi enim audivimus, et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi.
So they said to the woman, “It is no longer because of yoʋr report that we believe, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this is truly the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
43 Post duos autem dies exiit inde, et abiit in Galilæam.
After two days, he departed from there and went to Galilee.
44 Ipse enim Jesus testimonium perhibuit, quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet.
(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)
45 Cum ergo venisset in Galilæam, exceperunt eum Galilæi, cum omnia vidissent quæ fecerat Jerosolymis in die festo: et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum.
When he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him because they had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also had gone to the feast.
46 Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilææ, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidam regulus, cujus filius infirmabatur Capharnaum.
Once more Jesus went to Cana of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Now there was a certain royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum.
47 Hic cum audisset quia Jesus adveniret a Judæa in Galilæam, abiit ad eum, et rogabat eum ut descenderet, et sanaret filium ejus: incipiebat enim mori.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for his son was about to die.
48 Dixit ergo Jesus ad eum: Nisi signa et prodigia videritis, non creditis.
Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will certainly not believe.”
49 Dicit ad eum regulus: Domine, descende priusquam moriatur filius meus.
The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my boy dies.”
50 Dicit ei Jesus: Vade, filius tuus vivit. Credidit homo sermoni quem dixit ei Jesus, et ibat.
Jesus said to him, “Go; yoʋr son will live.” And the man believed what Jesus said to him and went on his way.
51 Jam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nuntiaverunt dicentes, quia filius ejus viveret.
As he was going back down to his house, his servants met him and told him, “Yoʋr son is alive.”
52 Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit. Et dixerunt ei: Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris.
So he asked them the hour when he began to get better. They said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Jesus: Filius tuus vivit; et credidit ipse et domus ejus tota.
Then the father realized that this was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Yoʋr son will live.” So he believed, along with his entire household.
54 Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Jesus, cum venisset a Judæa in Galilæam.
This was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.
