1 Multifariam, multisque modis olim Deus loquens patribus in prophetis:
On many occasions and in many ways in the olden time, God having spoken to the fathers through the prophets, at the last of these days has spoken to us through his Son,
2 novissime, diebus istis locutus est nobis in Filio, quem constituit hæredem universorum, per quem fecit et sæcula: (aiōn g165)
whom he put forth the heir of all things, and through whom he created the ages; (aiōn g165)
3 qui cum sit splendor gloriæ, et figura substantiæ ejus, portansque omnia verbo virtutis suæ, purgationem peccatorum faciens, sedet ad dexteram majestatis in excelsis:
who being the brightness of his glory, and the character of his person, and holding up all things by the word of his power, having made purgation of the sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
4 tanto melior angelis effectus, quanto differentius præ illis nomen hæreditavit.
being so much greater than the angels, that he has inherited a name so much more excellent than they.
5 Cui enim dixit aliquando angelorum: Filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui te? Et rursum: Ego ero illi in patrem, et ipse erit mihi in filium?
For to which one of the angels at any time did he say, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be unto him a Father, and he shall be unto me a Son?
6 Et cum iterum introducit primogenitum in orbem terræ, dicit: Et adorent eum omnes angeli Dei.
And again when he may lead in the first begotten into the world, he says, Indeed let all the angels of God worship him.
7 Et ad angelos quidem dicit: Qui facit angelos suos spiritus, et ministros suos flammam ignis.
And to the angels he says, he maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire: but to the Son he says,
8 Ad Filium autem: Thronus tuus Deus in sæculum sæculi: virga æquitatis, virga regni tui. (aiōn g165)
Thy throne, O God, is unto the age of the age; and the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom. (aiōn g165)
9 Dilexisti justitiam, et odisti iniquitatem: propterea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus, oleo exultationis præ participibus tuis.
Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy comrades.
10 Et: Tu in principio, Domine, terram fundasti: et opera manuum tuarum sunt cæli.
And thou, at the beginning, O Lord, didst lay the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of thy hands.
11 Ipsi peribunt, tu autem permanebis, et omnes ut vestimentum veterascent:
These shall perish; but thou dost remain: truly all these shall wax old like a garment;
12 et velut amictum mutabis eos, et mutabuntur: tu autem idem ipse es, et anni tui non deficient.
and thou shalt roll them up like a mantle, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail thee.
13 Ad quem autem angelorum dixit aliquando: Sede a dextris meis, quoadusque ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum?
And to which one of the angels has he at any time said, Sit thou on my right hand, until I may make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet?
14 Nonne omnes sunt administratorii spiritus, in ministerium missi propter eos, qui hæreditatem capient salutis?
Are not all these ministering spirits, having been sent forth unto ministration for the sake of those who are about to inherit salvation?
