1 サウロは、ステパノを殺すことに賛成していた。その日、エルサレムの教会に対する激しい迫害が起こり、使徒たち以外の者はみな、ユダヤとサマリヤの諸地方に散らされた。
BUT Saul was delighted with his execution. Now on that very day commenced a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and all, besides the apostles, were dispersed through the regions of Judea and Samaria.
2 敬虔な人たちはステパノを葬り、彼のために非常に悲しんだ。
Then some pious men assembling, carried Stephen to his grave, and made great lamentation over him.
3 サウロは教会を荒らし、家々にはいって、男も女も引きずり出し、次々に牢に入れた。
But Saul ravaged the church, entering into the houses, and dragging men and women, cast them into prison.
4 他方、散らされた人たちは、みことばを宣べながら、巡り歩いた。
Those therefore who were dispersed, travelled through the country, preaching the word.
5 ピリポはサマリヤの町に下って行き、人々にキリストを宣べ伝えた。
But Philip, going down to a city of Samaria, preached Christ unto them.
6 群衆はピリポの話を聞き、その行なっていたしるしを見て、みなそろって、彼の語ることに耳を傾けた。
And the multitudes with united minds were very attentive to the things spoken by Philip, when they heard him, and saw the miracles which he did.
7 汚れた霊につかれた多くの人たちからは、その霊が大声で叫んで出て行くし、大ぜいの中風の者や足のきかない者は直ったからである。
For the unclean spirits, roaring with great cries, came forth out of many who were possessed: and many who were paralytic and lame were healed.
8 それでその町に大きな喜びが起こった。
And there was great joy in that city.
9 ところが、この町にシモンという人がいた。彼は以前からこの町で魔術を行なって、サマリヤの人々を驚かし、自分は偉大な者だと話していた。
But a certain man, named Simon, lived previously in that city, who practised magic, and astonished the nation of Samaria, giving out himself as an extraordinary great personage:
10 小さな者から大きな者に至るまで、あらゆる人々が彼に関心を抱き、「この人こそ、大能と呼ばれる、神の力だ。」と言っていた。
to whom all gave heed from the small to the great, saying, This man is the great power of God.
11 人々が彼に関心を抱いたのは、長い間、その魔術に驚かされていたからである。
And to him they attended, because he had of a considerable time astonished them by his magical tricks.
12 しかし、ピリポが神の国とイエス・キリストの御名について宣べるのを信じた彼らは、男も女もバプテスマを受けた。
But when they believed Philip, who preached the glad tidings of the things which related to the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised both men and women.
13 シモン自身も信じて、バプテスマを受け、いつもピリポについていた。そして、しるしとすばらしい奇蹟が行なわれるのを見て、驚いていた。
Then Simon also himself believed: and being baptised, he attached himself to Philip, and beholding the signs and great miracles which were performed, he was astonished.
14 さて、エルサレムにいる使徒たちは、サマリヤの人々が神のことばを受け入れたと聞いて、ペテロとヨハネを彼らのところへ遣わした。
But when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 ふたりは下って行って、人々が聖霊を受けるように祈った。
who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 彼らは主イエスの御名によってバプテスマを受けていただけで、聖霊がまだだれにも下っておられなかったからである。
for as yet he had not fallen on any one of them: only they had been baptised into the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 ふたりが彼らの上に手を置くと、彼らは聖霊を受けた。
Then they laid their hands upon them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 使徒たちが手を置くと聖霊が与えられるのを見たシモンは、使徒たちのところに金を持って来て、
Now when Simon saw, that by the imposition of the apostles’ hands, the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 「私が手を置いた者がだれでも聖霊を受けられるように、この権威を私にも下さい。」と言った。
saying, Confer on me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, they may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 ペテロは彼に向かって言った。「あなたの金は、あなたとともに滅びるがよい。あなたは金で神の賜物を手に入れようと思っているからです。
But Peter said unto him, May thy silver with thyself go into perdition, because thou hast imagined that the gift of God can be purchased with money.
21 あなたは、このことについては何の関係もないし、それにあずかることもできません。あなたの心が神の前に正しくないからです。
There is for thee neither part nor lot in this word: for thy heart is not right before God.
22 だから、この悪事を悔い改めて、主に祈りなさい。あるいは、心に抱いた思いが赦されるかもしれません。
Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray to God, if haply this thought of thy heart may be forgiven thee.
23 あなたはまだ苦い胆汁と不義のきずなの中にいることが、私にはよくわかっています。」
For I see that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and the bond of iniquity.
24 シモンは答えて言った。「あなたがたの言われた事が何も私に起こらないように、私のために主に祈ってください。」
Then Simon answering said, Pray ye for me unto the Lord, that none of the things which ye have spoken may come upon me.
25 このようにして、使徒たちはおごそかにあかしをし、また主のことばを語って後、エルサレムへの帰途につき、サマリヤ人の多くの村でも福音を宣べ伝えた。
Then they, after bearing their testimony, and speaking the word of the Lord, returned towards Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
26 ところが、主の使いがピリポに向かってこう言った。「立って南へ行き、エルサレムからガザに下る道に出なさい。」（このガザは今、荒れ果てている。）
Now the angel of the Lord spake to Philip, saying, Arise, and go towards the south, on the road which leads down from Jerusalem to Gaza: it is a wilderness.
27 そこで、彼は立って出かけた。すると、そこに、エチオピヤ人の女王カンダケの高官で、女王の財産全部を管理していた宦官のエチオピヤ人がいた。彼は礼拝のためエルサレムに上り、
And he arose and went: and lo! an Ethiopian man, an eunuch, a person in power under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasury; he had gone to worship unto Jerusalem,
28 いま帰る途中であった。彼は馬車に乗って、預言者イザヤの書を読んでいた。
and was returning, and sitting in his chariot, was reading the prophet Isaiah.
29 御霊がピリポに「近寄って、あの馬車といっしょに行きなさい。」と言われた。
Then said the Spirit to Philip, Go up, and approach close to that chariot.
30 そこでピリポが走って行くと、預言者イザヤの書を読んでいるのが聞こえたので、「あなたは、読んでいることが、わかりますか。」と言った。
Then Philip running up to him, heard him reading the prophet Isaiah; and he said, Well! but dost thou understand what thou art reading?
31 すると、その人は、「導く人がなければ、どうしてわかりましょう。」と言った。そして馬車に乗っていっしょにすわるように、ピリポに頼んだ。
He replied, How indeed can I, except some person guide me in the way? And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 彼が読んでいた聖書の個所には、こう書いてあった。 「ほふり場に連れて行かれる羊のように、 また、黙々として 毛を刈る者の前に立つ小羊のように、 彼は口を開かなかった。
The portion of scripture which he had been reading was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and as a lamb before him who sheareth it is dumb, so he opened not his mouth:
33 彼は、卑しめられ、そのさばきも取り上げられた。 彼の時代のことを、だれが話すことができようか。 彼のいのちは地上から取り去られたのである。」
in his humiliation his judgment was taken away: but his generation who can describe? for his life was taken away from the earth.”
34 宦官はピリポに向かって言った。「預言者はだれについて、こう言っているのですか。どうか教えてください。自分についてですか。それとも、だれかほかの人についてですか。」
Then the eunuch addressing himself to Philip, said, I pray thee, of whom doth the prophet thus speak? of himself, or of some other person?
35 ピリポは口を開き、この聖句から始めて、イエスのことを彼に宣べ伝えた。
Then Philip opening his mouth, and beginning from that scripture, preached to him Jesus.
36 道を進んで行くうちに、水のある所に来たので、宦官は言った。「ご覧なさい。水があります。私がバプテスマを受けるのに、何かさしつかえがあるでしょうか。」
But as they went on the road, they came to some water: and the eunuch said, Here is water, what forbids my being baptised?
37 そして馬車を止めさせ、ピリポも宦官も水の中へ降りて行き、ピリポは宦官にバプテスマを授けた。
And Philip said, If thou believest with the whole heart, it is allowable. Then he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
And he bid the carriage stop: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptised him.
39 水から上がって来たとき、主の霊がピリポを連れ去られたので、宦官はそれから後彼を見なかったが、喜びながら帰って行った。
But when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught up Philip, and the eunuch saw him no more: then he went on his way rejoicing.
40 それからピリポはアゾトに現われ、すべての町々を通って福音を宣べ伝え、カイザリヤに行った。
But Philip found himself at Azotus: and passing through he preached the gospel in all the cities, until he came to Caesarea.
