< ローマ人への手紙 3 >

1 然らばユデア人に何の長ぜる所かある、又割禮に何の益かある、
So what advantage does the Jew have, or what is the profit of circumcision?
2 其は各方面に多し、即ち先神の曰し御言は彼等に托せられたるなり。
Much in every way! First of all, because they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
3 假令彼等の中に信ぜざる者ありしも、是何かあらん、彼等の不信仰は神の眞實を空しからしむべきか、決して然らず。
So, what if some did not believe? Their unbelief will not nullify God's faithfulness, will it?
4 神は眞實にて在し、人は総て僞る者なり。録して「(主よ)是汝が其言に於て義とせられ、審判せられ給ふも勝を得給はん為なり」、とあるが如し。
Of course not! Rather, let God be found true, but every man a liar; just as it is written: “That you may be justified in your words, and may overcome when you are judged.”
5 若我等の不義が神の義を顕すとせば、我等何をか云はん、怒を加へ給ふ神は不義なるか、――
Now if our unrighteousness highlights God's righteousness, what shall we say? God is not unrighteous for inflicting His wrath, is He? (I speak as a man.)
6 是は人の云ふ如くに云へり――決して然らず、若然りとせば、神は如何にしてか此世を審判し給ふべき。
Of course not! Otherwise, how will God judge the world?
7 若我等の僞によりて神の眞實顕れ、其光榮の増したらんには、争でか我も罪人と定めらるる事あらんや。
Still, if the truth of God abounded to His glory by my falsehood, just why am I still judged as a sinner?
8 また――我等の罵られて然稱ふと或人々に云はるる如く――善を來さん為に惡を為すべけんや、斯る人々の罪せらるるは宜なり。
However, we must not say, “Let us do evil so that good may come” (as some people slanderously claim that we do)—their condemnation is well deserved!
9 然らば何ぞや、我等は異邦人に先つ者なるか、決して然らず、其は既にユデア人もギリシア人も皆罪の下に在りと證したればなり。
What then? Are we any better? Not at all! For we have already charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.
10 録して、「誰も義しき者なく、
Just as it is written: “No one is righteous, not even one;
11 覚る者なく、神を求むる者なし、
there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
12 皆迷ひて相共に空しき者となれり、善を為す者なし、一人だもある事なし。
All have turned aside, together they have been made useless; there is no one who shows kindness, no, not so much as one.”
13 彼等の喉は開きたる墓なり、其舌を以て欺き、其唇の下に蝮の毒あり、
“Their throat is an opened grave; they habitually deceive with their tongues.” “Viper's venom is under their lips”;
14 其口は詛と苦とに充ち、
“whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 其足は血を流す為に疾く、
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 破と禍とは、其道途に在り、
ruin and wretchedness are in their paths,
17 彼等は平和の道を知らず、
and the way of peace they have not known.”
18 其目前に神に對する畏れなし」とあるが如し。
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19 但総て律法の言ふ所は律法の下に在る人々に向ひて言ふこと、我等之を知れり、是凡ての口塞りて、全世界が神に屈服するに至らん為なり。
Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be shut and the whole world become accountable to God.
20 蓋神の御前には、如何なる人も律法の業に由りて義とせらるる事あらじ、律法に由りて得るは罪の意識なればなり。
It follows that no flesh will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because through the law comes the real knowledge of sin.
21 然るに律法と預言者とに證せられて、神の[賜ふ]義は今や律法の外に顕れたり。
But now, apart from law, a righteousness from God has been revealed, being attested by the Law and the Prophets,
22 即ちイエズス、キリストに於る信仰に由て神の「賜ふ」義は信仰する者の凡に及び、凡ての上に在り、蓋し差別ある事なし、
namely, a righteousness from God through faith in Jesus Christ, into all and upon all those who believe. There is no difference:
23 其は皆罪を犯したる者にして、神の光榮を要すればなり。
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 人々の義とせらるるは、功なくして唯神の恩寵に由り、キリスト、イエズスに於る贖に由りてなり。
being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;
25 即ち神は從前の罪を忍び給ひしに、其赦を以て己が正義を顕さん為に、イエズス、キリストを宥の犠牲に供へ、其御血に於る信仰を有たしめ、
whom God has openly made available as a propitiation through the faith in His blood, to demonstrate His righteousness because of the passing over, in God's forbearance, of the previously committed sins;
26 今は己が正義を證せんとて、自ら其正義を顕し給ひ、イエズス、キリストに於る信仰の人をも義と為し給ひしなり。
to demonstrate His righteousness at this present time, so as to be just, Himself, and the justifier of him who is of the Faith of Jesus.
27 然らば誇る所何處にか在る、其は除かれたり。如何なる法を以て除かれたるか、業を以てなるか、然らず、信仰の法を以てなり。
Where then is the boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law, that of works? No, but by a law of faith.
28 蓋我等謂ふに、人の義とせらるるは律法の業に由らずして信仰に由る。
Therefore we conclude that a person is justified by faith apart from works of law.
29 神豈ユデア人のみの神ならんや、異邦人にも亦然るに非ずや、然り異邦人にも神たるなり。
Or is God for Jews only? Is He not also for Gentiles? Yes, also for Gentiles,
30 其は神は唯一に在して、割禮の人を信仰に由りて義とし、無割禮の人をも信仰に由りて義とし給へばなり。
since indeed there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through the Faith.
31 然らば我等は信仰を以て律法を亡ぼすか、然らず、却て律法を固うするなり。
Do we then nullify law through the Faith? Of course not! Rather, we uphold law.
