マタイの福音書 2
1 第三項 博士等の参拝 斯てイエズス、ヘロデ王の時、ユデアのベトレヘムに生れ給ひしかば、折しも博士等東方よりエルザレムに來りて、
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men [magi] from the East came into Jerusalem,
2 云ひけるは、生れたるユデア人の王は何處に在すぞ、即我等東方にて彼が星を見、之を拝みに來れり、と。
saying: “Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the East and have come to worship him.”
3 ヘロデ王之を聞きて狼狽へしが、エルザレムも亦挙りて然ありき。
When Herod the king heard it he became agitated, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 王は司祭長と民間の律法學士とを悉く集めて、キリスト何處に生るべきかと問ひたるに、
And gathering all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 彼等云ひけるは、ユデアのベトレヘムに、其は預言者の録して、
So they said to him: “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it stands written by the prophet:
6 「ユダの地ベトレヘムよ、汝はユダの郡中に最も小き者には非ず、蓋我イスラエルの民を牧すべき君汝の中より出ん。」とあればなり、と。
‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are not at all the least among the rulers of Judah, for out of you will come a Ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 其時ヘロデ密に博士等を召して、星の現れし時を聞匡し、
Then Herod, calling the wise men secretly, determined from them the time when the star appeared.
8 彼等をベトレヘムに遣るとて云ひけるは、往きて詳に孩兒の事を尋ね、其を見出さば我に告げよ、我も往きて之を拝まん、と。
And directing them to Bethlehem he said, “When you get there, search carefully for the young child; and should you find him, bring back word to me, so that I also may go and worship him.”
9 彼等王の言を聴きて出行きけるに、折しも東方にて見たりし星彼等の先に立ち、終に孩兒の居る處に至りて其上に止れり。
So having heard the king they departed, and there was the star that they had seen in the East! It went before them until it arrived and stopped above where the young Child was.
10 彼等其星を見て甚喜び、
Now when they saw the star they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy!
11 家に入りて孩兒の其母マリアと共に居るを見、平伏して之を拝し、寳箱を開きて黄金乳香没薬の禮物を献げたり。
And coming into the house they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and falling down they worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 斯てヘロデに返ること勿れとの示を夢に得て、他の途より己が國に歸れり。
Then, having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by a different road.
13 第四項 聖家エジプトへ避難す 博士等の去りし後、折しも主の使ヨゼフの夢に現れて云ひけうるは、起きて孩兒と其母とを携へてエジプトに逃れ、我が汝に告ぐるまで彼處に居れ、其はヘロデ孩兒を殺さんとて之を索めんとすればなり、と。
Now when they had departed, again, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying: “Get up, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you; because Herod is about to seek the young Child to destroy Him!”
14 ヨゼフ起きて孩兒と其母とを携へて夜エジプトに避け、
So he got up and took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt.
15 ヘロデの死するまで其處に居れり、是主より曾て預言者を以て云はれし事の成就せん為なり、曰く「我我子をエジプトより呼出せり」と。
And he was there until the death of Herod, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet should be fulfilled, namely: “Out of Egypt I called my Son.”
16 時にヘロデ、博士等に欺かれしを見て大に怒り、人を遣はして博士等に聞きたりし時を度りて、ベトレヘム及其四方に在る二歳以下の男児を悉く殺せり。
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent out and killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
17 斯て預言者エレミアに依りて云はれたる事成就せり、
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, namely:
18 曰く「ラマに聲あり、歎にして大なる叫なりけり、ラケル其子等を歎き、彼等の亡きに因り敢て慰を容れず」と。
“A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children and not wanting to be comforted, because they are no more.”
19 第五項 エジプトよりの歸國 ヘロデ死せしかば、折しも主の使エジプトに於てヨゼフの夢に現れ、
Now Herod having died, there, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 云ひけるは、起きて孩兒と其母とを携へてイスラエルの地に往け、蓋孩兒の生命を索めし人々は既に死せり、と。
saying: “Get up, take the young Child and His mother and go into the land of Israel, for those seeking the life of the young Child have died.”
21 ヨゼフ起きて孩兒と其母とを携へ、イスラエルの地に至りしに、
So he got up and took the young Child and His mother and went into the land of Israel.
22 アルケラオ其父ヘロデに継ぎてユデアを治むと聞き、彼處に往く事を懼れしが、た夢に告ありてガリレアの地方に避け、
But hearing that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream he proceeded into the region of Galilee.
23 ナザレトと云ふ街に至りて住めり。是預言者等によりて「彼はナザレト人と稱へられん」と云はれし事の成就せん為なり。
And upon arriving he settled in a city called Natsareth [Branch-town], so that what was spoken through the prophets should be fulfilled, that He would be called a Natsorean [Branch-man].
