民数記 21
1 時にネゲブに住んでいたカナンびとアラデの王は、イスラエルがアタリムの道をとおって来ると聞いて、イスラエルを攻撃し、そのうちの数人を捕虜にした。
And the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of Atharim, and he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.
2 そこでイスラエルは主に誓いを立てて言った、「もし、あなたがこの民をわたしの手にわたしてくださるならば、わたしはその町々をことごとく滅ぼしましょう」。
Then Israel vowed a vow to Jehovah, and said, If thou give this people wholly into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 主はイスラエルの言葉を聞きいれ、カナンびとをわたされたので、イスラエルはそのカナンびとと、その町々とをことごとく滅ぼした。それでその所の名はホルマと呼ばれた。
And Jehovah listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them, and their cities. And they called the name of the place Hormah.
4 民はホル山から進み、紅海の道をとおって、エドムの地を回ろうとしたが、民はその道に堪えがたくなった。
And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to go round the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient on the way;
5 民は神とモーセとにむかい、つぶやいて言った、「あなたがたはなぜわたしたちをエジプトから導き上って、荒野で死なせようとするのですか。ここには食物もなく、水もありません。わたしたちはこの粗悪な食物はいやになりました」。
and the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have ye brought us up out of Egypt that we should die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and no water, and our soul loathes this light bread.
6 そこで主は、火のへびを民のうちに送られた。へびは民をかんだので、イスラエルの民のうち、多くのものが死んだ。
Then Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, which bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
7 民はモーセのもとに行って言った、「わたしたちは主にむかい、またあなたにむかい、つぶやいて罪を犯しました。どうぞへびをわたしたちから取り去られるように主に祈ってください」。モーセは民のために祈った。
And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, in that we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee: pray to Jehovah that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 そこで主はモーセに言われた、「火のへびを造って、それをさおの上に掛けなさい。すべてのかまれた者が仰いで、それを見るならば生きるであろう」。
And Jehovah said to Moses, Make thee a fiery [serpent], and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, and looketh upon it, shall live.
9 モーセは青銅で一つのへびを造り、それをさおの上に掛けて置いた。すべてへびにかまれた者はその青銅のへびを仰いで見て生きた。
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, if a serpent had bitten any man, and he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
10 イスラエルの人々は道を進んでオボテに宿営した。
And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.
11 またオボテから進んで東の方、モアブの前にある荒野において、イエアバリムに宿営した。
And they removed from Oboth, and encamped at Ijim-Abarim, in the wilderness that is before Moab, toward the sun-rising.
12 またそこから進んでゼレデの谷に宿営し、
From thence they removed, and encamped at the torrent Zered.
13 さらにそこから進んでアルノン川のかなたに宿営した。アルノン川はアモリびとの境から延び広がる荒野を流れるもので、モアブとアモリびととの間にあって、モアブの境をなしていた。
From thence they removed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
14 それゆえに、「主の戦いの書」にこう言われている。「スパのワヘブ、アルノンの谷々、
Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, and the brooks of Arnon;
15 谷々の斜面、アルの町まで傾き、モアブの境に寄りかかる」。
And the stream of the brooks which turneth to the dwelling of Ar, And inclineth toward the border of Moab.
16 彼らはそこからベエルへ進んで行った。これは主がモーセにむかって、「民を集めよ。わたしはかれらに水を与えるであろう」と言われた井戸である。
And from thence to Beer: that is the well of which Jehovah spoke to Moses, Assemble the people, and I will give them water.
17 その時イスラエルはこの歌をうたった。「井戸の水よ、わきあがれ、人々よ、この井戸のために歌え、
Then Israel sang this song, Rise up, well! sing unto it:
18 笏とつえとをもってつかさたちがこの井戸を掘り、民のおさたちがこれを掘った」。そして彼らは荒野からマッタナに進み、
Well which princes digged, which the nobles of the people hollowed out at [the word of] the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness [they went] to Mattanah;
19 マッタナからナハリエルに、ナハリエルからバモテに、
and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;
20 バモテからモアブの野にある谷に行き、荒野を見おろすピスガの頂に着いた。
and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks over the surface of the waste.
21 ここでイスラエルはアモリびとの王シホンに使者をつかわして言わせた、
And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,
22 「わたしにあなたの国を通らせてください。わたしたちは畑にもぶどう畑にも、はいりません。また井戸の水も飲みません。わたしたちはあなたの領地を通り過ぎるまで、ただ王の大路を通ります」。
Let us pass through thy land; we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink water out of the wells; on the king's road will we go until we have passed thy border.
23 しかし、シホンはイスラエルに自分の領地を通ることを許さなかった。そしてシホンは民をことごとく集め、荒野に出て、イスラエルを攻めようとし、ヤハズにきてイスラエルと戦った。
But Sihon would not suffer Israel to go through his border; and Sihon gathered all his people, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 イスラエルは、やいばで彼を撃ちやぶり、アルノンからヤボクまで彼の地を占領し、アンモンびとの境に及んだ。ヤゼルはアンモンびとの境だからである。
And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
25 こうしてイスラエルはこれらの町々をことごとく取った。そしてイスラエルはアモリびとのすべての町々に住み、ヘシボンとそれに附属するすべての村々にいた。
And Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, at Heshbon, and in all its dependent villages.
26 ヘシボンはアモリびとの王シホンの都であって、シホンはモアブの以前の王と戦って、彼の地をアルノンまで、ことごとくその手から奪い取ったのである。
For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.
27 それゆえに歌にうたわれている。「人々よ、ヘシボンにきたれ、シホンの町を築き建てよ。
Therefore the poets say, Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established.
28 ヘシボンから火が燃え出し、シホンの都から炎が出て、モアブのアルを焼き尽し、アルノンの高地の君たちを滅ぼしたからだ。
For there went forth fire from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; It consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of the Arnon.
29 モアブよ、お前はわざわいなるかな、ケモシの民よ、お前は滅ぼされるであろう。彼は、むすこらを逃げ去らせ、娘らをアモリびとの王シホンの捕虜とならせた。
Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, people of Chemosh: He gave his sons that had escaped, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon the king of the Amorites.
30 彼らの子らは滅び去った、ヘシボンからデボンまで。われわれは荒した、火はついてメデバに及んだ」。
And we have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon; and we have laid [them] waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
31 こうしてイスラエルはアモリびとの地に住んだが、
And Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
32 モーセはまた人をつかわしてヤゼルを探らせ、ついにその村々を取って、そこにいたアモリびとを追い出し、
And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took its dependent villages, and he dispossessed the Amorites that were there.
33 転じてバシャンの道に上って行ったが、バシャンの王オグは、その民をことごとく率い、エデレイで戦おうとして出迎えた。
And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, for battle to Edrei.
34 主はモーセに言われた、「彼を恐れてはならない。わたしは彼とその民とその地とを、ことごとくあなたの手にわたす。あなたはヘシボンに住んでいたアモリびとの王シホンにしたように彼にもするであろう」。
And Jehovah said to Moses, Fear him not! for into thy hand have I given him, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.
35 そこで彼とその子とすべての民とを、ひとり残らず撃ち殺して、その地を占領した。
And they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, so that they left him none remaining, and took possession of his land.
