民数記 14
1 そこで、会衆はみな声をあげて叫び、民はその夜、泣き明かした。
And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2 またイスラエルの人々はみなモーセとアロンにむかってつぶやき、全会衆は彼らに言った、「ああ、わたしたちはエジプトの国で死んでいたらよかったのに。この荒野で死んでいたらよかったのに。
And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would Elohim that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would Elohim we had died in this wilderness!
3 なにゆえ、主はわたしたちをこの地に連れてきて、つるぎに倒れさせ、またわたしたちの妻子をえじきとされるのであろうか。エジプトに帰る方が、むしろ良いではないか」。
And wherefore hath YHWH brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4 彼らは互に言った、「わたしたちはひとりのかしらを立てて、エジプトに帰ろう」。
And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5 そこで、モーセとアロンはイスラエルの人々の全会衆の前でひれふした。
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6 このとき、その地を探った者のうちのヌンの子ヨシュアとエフンネの子カレブは、その衣服を裂き、
And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7 イスラエルの人々の全会衆に言った、「わたしたちが行き巡って探った地は非常に良い地です。
And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 もし、主が良しとされるならば、わたしたちをその地に導いて行って、それをわたしたちにくださるでしょう。それは乳と蜜の流れている地です。
If YHWH delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 ただ、主にそむいてはなりません。またその地の民を恐れてはなりません。彼らはわたしたちの食い物にすぎません。彼らを守る者は取り除かれます。主がわたしたちと共におられますから、彼らを恐れてはなりません」。
Only rebel not ye against YHWH, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and YHWH is with us: fear them not.
10 ところが会衆はみな石で彼らを撃ち殺そうとした。そのとき、主の栄光が、会見の幕屋からイスラエルのすべての人に現れた。
But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of YHWH appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 主はモーセに言われた、「この民はいつまでわたしを侮るのか。わたしがもろもろのしるしを彼らのうちに行ったのに、彼らはいつまでわたしを信じないのか。
And YHWH said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 わたしは疫病をもって彼らを撃ち滅ぼし、あなたを彼らよりも大いなる強い国民としよう」。
I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 モーセは主に言った、「エジプトびとは、あなたが力をもって、この民を彼らのうちから導き出されたことを聞いて、
And Moses said unto YHWH, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them; )
14 この地の住民に告げるでしょう。彼らは、主なるあなたが、この民のうちにおられ、主なるあなたが、まのあたり現れ、あなたの雲が、彼らの上にとどまり、昼は雲の柱のうちに、夜は火の柱のうちにあって、彼らの前に行かれるのを聞いたのです。
And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou YHWH art among this people, that thou YHWH art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 いま、もし、あなたがこの民をひとり残らず殺されるならば、あなたのことを聞いた国民は語って、
Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 『主は与えると誓った地に、この民を導き入れることができなかったため、彼らを荒野で殺したのだ』と言うでしょう。
Because YHWH was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 どうぞ、あなたが約束されたように、いま主の大いなる力を現してください。
And now, I beseech thee, let the power of YHWH be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 あなたはかつて、『主は怒ることおそく、いつくしみに富み、罪ととがをゆるす者、しかし、罰すべき者は、決してゆるさず、父の罪を子に報いて、三、四代に及ぼす者である』と言われました。
YHWH is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 どうぞ、あなたの大いなるいつくしみによって、エジプトからこのかた、今にいたるまで、この民をゆるされたように、この民の罪をおゆるしください」。
Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 主は言われた、「わたしはあなたの言葉のとおりにゆるそう。
And YHWH said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21 しかし、わたしは生きている。また主の栄光が、全世界に満ちている。
But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of YHWH.
22 わたしの栄光と、わたしがエジプトと荒野で行ったしるしを見ながら、このように十度もわたしを試みて、わたしの声に聞きしたがわなかった人々はひとりも、
Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23 わたしがかつて彼らの先祖たちに与えると誓った地を見ないであろう。またわたしを侮った人々も、それを見ないであろう。
Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24 ただし、わたしのしもべカレブは違った心をもっていて、わたしに完全に従ったので、わたしは彼が行ってきた地に彼を導き入れるであろう。彼の子孫はそれを所有するにいたるであろう。
But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25 谷にはアマレクびととカナンびとが住んでいるから、あなたがたは、あす、身をめぐらして紅海の道を荒野へ進みなさい」。
(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26 主はモーセとアロンに言われた、
And YHWH spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27 「わたしにむかってつぶやくこの悪い会衆をいつまで忍ぶことができようか。わたしはイスラエルの人々が、わたしにむかってつぶやくのを聞いた。
How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 あなたは彼らに言いなさい、『主は言われる、「わたしは生きている。あなたがたが、わたしの耳に語ったように、わたしはあなたがたにするであろう。
Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith YHWH, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 あなたがたは死体となって、この荒野に倒れるであろう。あなたがたのうち、わたしにむかってつぶやいた者、すなわち、すべて数えられた二十歳以上の者はみな倒れるであろう。
Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,
30 エフンネの子カレブと、ヌンの子ヨシュアのほかは、わたしがかつて、あなたがたを住まわせようと、手をあげて誓った地に、はいることができないであろう。
Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 しかし、あなたがたが、えじきになるであろうと言ったあなたがたの子供は、わたしが導いて、はいるであろう。彼らはあなたがたが、いやしめた地を知るようになるであろう。
But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32 しかしあなたがたは死体となってこの荒野に倒れるであろう。
But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33 あなたがたの子たちは、あなたがたの死体が荒野に朽ち果てるまで四十年のあいだ、荒野で羊飼となり、あなたがたの不信の罪を負うであろう。
And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 あなたがたは、かの地を探った四十日の日数にしたがい、その一日を一年として、四十年のあいだ、自分の罪を負い、わたしがあなたがたを遠ざかったことを知るであろう」。
After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35 主なるわたしがこれを言う。わたしは必ずわたしに逆らって集まったこの悪い会衆に、これをことごとく行うであろう。彼らはこの荒野に朽ち、ここで死ぬであろう』」。
I YHWH have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36 こうして、モーセにつかわされ、かの地を探りに行き、帰ってきて、その地を悪く言い、全会衆を、モーセにむかって、つぶやかせた人々、
And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37 すなわち、その地を悪く言いふらした人々は、疫病にかかって主の前に死んだが、
Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before YHWH.
38 その地を探りに行った人々のうち、ヌンの子ヨシュアと、エフンネの子カレブとは生き残った。
But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39 モーセが、これらのことを、イスラエルのすべての人々に告げたとき、民は非常に悲しみ、
And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40 朝早く起きて山の頂きに登って言った、「わたしたちはここにいる。さあ、主が約束された所へ上って行こう。わたしたちは罪を犯したのだから」。
And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which YHWH hath promised: for we have sinned.
41 モーセは言った、「あなたがたは、それをなし遂げることもできないのに、どうして、そのように主の命にそむくのか。
And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of YHWH? but it shall not prosper.
42 あなたがたは上って行ってはならない。主があなたがたのうちにおられないから、あなたがたは敵の前に、撃ち破られるであろう。
Go not up, for YHWH is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43 そこには、アマレクびとと、カナンびとがあなたがたの前にいるから、あなたがたは、つるぎに倒れるであろう。あなたがたがそむいて、主に従わなかったゆえ、主はあなたがたと共におられないからである」。
For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from YHWH, therefore YHWH will not be with you.
44 しかし、彼らは、ほしいままに山の頂に登った。ただし、主の契約の箱と、モーセとは、宿営の中から出なかった。
But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of YHWH, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 そこで、その山に住んでいたアマレクびとと、カナンびとが下ってきて、彼らを撃ち破り、ホルマまで追ってきた。
Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
