ネヘミヤ 記 5
1 さて、ここに民がその妻と共に、その兄弟であるユダヤ人に向かって大いに叫び訴えることがあった。
And the cry of the people and their wives [was] great against their brethren the Jews.
2 すなわち、ある人々は言った、「われわれはむすこ娘と共に大ぜいです。われわれは穀物を得て、食べて生きていかなければなりません」。
And some said, We [are] numerous with our sons and our daughters; so we will take corn, and eat, and live.
3 またある人々は言った、「われわれは飢えのために、穀物を得ようと田畑も、ぶどう畑も、家も抵当に入れています」。
And some said, [As to] our fields and vineyards and houses, let us pledge [them], and we will take corn, and eat.
4 ある人々は言った、「われわれは王の税金のために、われわれの田畑およびぶどう畑をもって金を借りました。
And some said, We have borrowed money for the king's tributes: —our fields, and our vineyards, and houses [are pledged].
5 現にわれわれの肉はわれわれの兄弟の肉に等しく、われわれの子供も彼らの子供に等しいのに、見よ、われわれはむすこ娘を人の奴隷とするようにしいられています。われわれの娘のうちには、すでに人の奴隷になった者もありますが、われわれの田畑も、ぶどう畑も他人のものになっているので、われわれにはどうする力もありません」。
And now our flesh [is] as the flesh of our brethren, our children [are] as their children: yet, behold, we are reducing our sons and our daughters to slavery, and some of our daughters are enslaved: and there is no power of our hands, for our fields and our vineyards [belong] to the nobles.
6 わたしは彼らの叫びと、これらの言葉を聞いて大いに怒った。
And I was much grieved as I heard their cry and these words.
7 わたしはみずから考えたすえ、尊い人々およびつかさたちを責めて言った、「あなたがたはめいめいその兄弟から利息をとっている」。そしてわたしは彼らの事について大会を開き、
And my heart took counsel within me, and I contended against the nobles, and the princes, and I said to them, Should every man demand of his brother what you demand? And I appointed against them a great assembly,
8 彼らに言った、「われわれは異邦人に売られたわれわれの兄弟ユダヤ人を、われわれの力にしたがってあがなった。しかるにあなたがたは自分の兄弟を売ろうとするのか。彼らはわれわれに売られるのか」。彼らは黙してひと言もいわなかった。
and I said to them, We of our free-will have redeemed our brethren the Jews that were sold to the Gentiles; and do you sell your brethren? and shall they be delivered to us? And they were silent, and found no answer.
9 わたしはまた言った、「あなたがたのする事はよくない。あなたがたは、われわれの敵である異邦人のそしりをやめさせるために、われわれの神を恐れつつ事をなすべきではないか。
And I said, The thing which you do [is] not good; you will not so walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the Gentiles our enemies.
10 わたしもわたしの兄弟たちも、わたしのしもべたちも同じく金と穀物とを貸しているが、われわれはこの利息をやめよう。
Both my brethren, and my acquaintances, and I, have lent them money and corn: let us now leave off this exaction.
11 どうぞ、あなたがたは、きょうにも彼らの田畑、ぶどう畑、オリブ畑および家屋を彼らに返し、またあなたがたが彼らから取っていた金銭、穀物、ぶどう酒、油などの百分の一を返しなさい」。
Restore to them, I pray, as at this day, their fields, and their vineyards, and their olive yards, and their houses, and bring forth to them corn and wine and oil of the money.
12 すると彼らは「われわれはそれを返します。彼らから何をも要求しません。あなたの言うようにします」と言った。そこでわたしは祭司たちを呼び、彼らにこの言葉のとおりに行うという誓いを立てさせた。
And they said, We will restore, and we will not exact of them; we will do thus as you say. Then I called the priests, and bound them by oath to do according to this word.
13 わたしはまたわたしのふところを打ち払って言った、「この約束を実行しない者を、どうぞ神がこのように打ち払って、その家およびその仕事を離れさせられるように。その人はこのように打ち払われてむなしくなるように」。会衆はみな「アァメン」と言って、主をさんびした。そして民はこの約束のとおりに行った。
And I shook out my garment, and said, So may God shake out every man who shall not keep to this word, from his house, and from his labors, he shall be even thus shaken out, as an outcast and empty. And all the congregation said, Amen, and they praised the Lord: and the people did this thing.
14 またわたしは、ユダの地の総督に任ぜられた時から、すなわちアルタシャスタ王の第二十年から第三十二年まで、十二年の間、わたしもわたしの兄弟たちも、総督としての手当てを受けなかった。
From the day that he charged me to be their ruler in the land of Juda, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Arthasastha, twelve years, I and my brethren ate not [provision] extorted from them.
15 わたしより以前の総督らは民に重荷を負わせ、彼らから銀四十シケルのほかにパンとぶどう酒を取り、また彼らのしもべたちも民を圧迫した。しかしわたしは神を恐れるので、そのようなことはしなかった。
But as for the former acts of extortion wherein [those who were] before me oppressed them, they even took of them their last money, forty didrachmas for bread and wine; and the [very] outcasts of them exercised authority over the people: but I did not so, because of the fear of God.
16 わたしはかえって、この城壁の工事に身をゆだね、どんな土地をも買ったことはない。わたしのしもべたちは皆そこに集まって工事をした。
Also in the work of the wall I treated them not with rigor, I bought not land: and all that were gathered together [came] there to the work.
17 またわたしの食卓にはユダヤ人と、つかさたち百五十人もあり、そのほかに、われわれの周囲の異邦人のうちからきた人々もあった。
And the Jews, to [the number of] a hundred and fifty men, besides those coming to us from the nations round about, [were] at my table.
18 これがために一日に牛一頭、肥えた羊六頭を備え、また鶏をもわたしのために備え、十日ごとにたくさんのぶどう酒を備えたが、わたしはこの民の労役が重かったので、総督としての手当てを求めなかった。
And there came [to me] for one day one calf, and I had six choice sheep and a goat; and every ten days wine in abundance of all sorts: yet with these I required not the bread of extortion, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.
19 わが神よ、わたしがこの民のためにしたすべての事を覚えて、わたしをお恵みください。
Remember me, O God, for good, [in] all that I have done to this people.
