ネヘミヤ 記 2
1 アルタシャスタ王の第二十年、ニサンの月に、王の前に酒が出た時、わたしは酒をついで王にささげた。これまでわたしは王の前で悲しげな顔をしていたことはなかった。
It happened in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artachshasta the king, when wine was before me, that I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.
2 王はわたしに言われた、「あなたは病気でもないのにどうして悲しげな顔をしているのか。何か心に悲しみをもっているにちがいない」。そこでわたしは大いに恐れて、
The king said to me, "Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart." Then I was very much afraid.
3 王に申しあげた、「どうぞ王よ、長生きされますように。わたしの先祖の墳墓の地であるあの町は荒廃し、その門が火で焼かれたままであるのに、どうしてわたしは悲しげな顔をしないでいられましょうか」。
I said to the king, "Let the king live forever. Why shouldn't my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?"
4 王はわたしにむかって、「それでは、あなたは何を願うのか」と言われたので、わたしは天の神に祈って、
Then the king said to me, "For what do you make request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven.
5 王に申しあげた、「もし王がよしとされ、しもべがあなたの前に恵みを得ますならば、どうかわたしを、ユダにあるわたしの先祖の墳墓の町につかわして、それを再建させてください」。
I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may build it."
6 時に王妃もかたわらに座していたが、王はわたしに言われた、「あなたの旅の期間はどれほどですか。いつごろ帰ってきますか」。こうして王がわたしをつかわすことをよしとされたので、わたしは期間を定めて王に申しあげた。
The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him), "For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?" So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
7 わたしはまた王に申しあげた、「もし王がよしとされるならば、川向こうの州の知事たちに与える手紙をわたしに賜わり、わたしがユダに行きつくまで、彼らがわたしを通過させるようにしてください。
Moreover I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;
8 また王の山林を管理するアサフに与える手紙をも賜わり、神殿に属する城の門を建てるため、また町の石がき、およびわたしの住むべき家を建てるために用いる材木をわたしに与えるようにしてください」。わたしの神がよくわたしを助けられたので、王はわたしの願いを許された。
and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into." The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.
9 そこでわたしは川向こうの州の知事たちの所へ行って、王の手紙を渡した。なお王は軍の長および騎兵をわたしと共につかわした。
Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.
10 ところがホロニびとサンバラテおよびアンモンびと奴隷トビヤはこれを聞き、イスラエルの子孫の福祉を求める人が来たというので、大いに感情を害した。
When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, because a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
11 わたしはエルサレムに着いて、そこに三日滞在した後、
So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
12 夜中に起き出た。数人の者がわたしに伴ったが、わたしは、神がエルサレムのためになそうとして、わたしの心に入れられたことを、だれにも告げ知らせず、またわたしが乗った獣のほかには、獣をつれて行かなかった。
I arose in the night, I and some few men with me. And I told no one what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any animal with me, except the animal that I rode on.
13 わたしは夜中に出て谷の門を通り、龍の井戸および糞の門に行って、エルサレムのくずれた城壁や、火に焼かれた門を調査し、
I went out by night by the Valley Gate, even toward the Serpent's Well, and to the Dung Gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.
14 また泉の門および王の池に行ったが、わたしの乗っている獣の通るべき所もなかった。
Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.
15 わたしはまたその夜のうちに谷に沿って上り、城壁を調査したうえ、身をめぐらして、谷の門を通って帰った。
Then went I up in the night by the wadi, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned.
16 つかさたちは、わたしがどこへ行ったか、何をしたかを知らなかった。わたしはまたユダヤ人にも、祭司たちにも、尊い人たちにも、つかさたちにも、その他工事をする人々にもまだ知らせなかった。
The rulers did not know where I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest who did the work.
17 しかしわたしはついに彼らに言った、「あなたがたの見るとおり、われわれは難局にある。エルサレムは荒廃し、その門は火に焼かれた。さあ、われわれは再び世のはずかしめをうけることのないように、エルサレムの城壁を築こう」。
Then I said to them, "You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won't be disgraced."
18 そして、わたしの神がよくわたしを助けられたことを彼らに告げ、また王がわたしに語られた言葉をも告げたので、彼らは「さあ、立ち上がって築こう」と言い、奮い立って、この良きわざに着手しようとした。
I told them of the hand of my God which was good on me, as also of the king's words that he had spoken to me. They said, "Let's rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
19 ところがホロニびとサンバラテ、アンモンびと奴隷トビヤおよびアラビヤびとガシムがこれを聞いて、われわれをあざけり、われわれを侮って言った、「あなたがたは何をするのか、王に反逆しようとするのか」。
But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they ridiculed us, and despised us, and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?"
20 わたしは彼らに答えて言った、「天の神がわれわれを恵まれるので、そのしもべであるわれわれは奮い立って築くのである。しかしあなたがたはエルサレムに何の分もなく、権利もなく、記念もない」。
Then answered I them, and said to them, "The God of heaven will prosper us. Therefore we, his servants, will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem."
