士師記 21
1 かつてイスラエルの人々はミヅパで、「われわれのうちひとりもその娘をベニヤミンびとの妻として与える者があってはならない」と言って誓ったので、
Now the children of Israel had also sworn in Maspha, saying: None of us shall give of his daughters to the children of Benjamin to wife.
2 民はベテルに行って、そこで夕暮まで神の前に座し、声をあげて激しく泣いて、
And they all came to the house of God in Silo, and abiding before him till the evening, lifted up their voices, and began to lament and weep, saying:
3 言った、「イスラエルの神、主よ、どうしてイスラエルにこのような事が起って、今日イスラエルに一つの部族が欠けるようになったのですか」。
O Lord God of Israel, why is so great an evil come to pass in thy people, that this day one tribe should be taken away from among us?
4 翌日、民は早く起きて、そこに祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげた。
And rising early the next day, they built an altar: and offered there holocausts, and victims of peace, and they said:
5 そしてイスラエルの人々は言った、「イスラエルのすべての部族のうちで集会に上って、主のもとに行かなかった者はだれか」。これは彼らがミヅパにのぼって、主のもとに行かない者のことについて大いなる誓いを立てて、「その人は必ず殺されなければならない」と言ったからである。
Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the army of the Lord? for they had bound themselves with a great oath, when they were in Maspha, that whosoever were wanting should be slain.
6 しかしイスラエルの人々は兄弟ベニヤミンをあわれんで言った、「今日イスラエルに一つの部族が絶えた。
And the children of Israel being moved with repentance for their brother Benjamin, began to say: One tribe is taken away from Israel.
7 われわれは主をさして、われわれの娘を彼らに妻として与えないと誓ったので、かの残った者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいであろうか」。
Whence shall they take wives? For we have all in general sworn, not to give our daughters to them.
8 彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルの部族のうちで、ミヅパにのぼって主のもとに行かなかったのはどの部族か」。ところがヤベシ・ギレアデからはひとりも陣営にきて集会に臨んだ者がなかった。
Therefore they said: Who is thereof all the tribes of Israel, that came not up to the Lord to Maspha. And behold the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad were found not to have been in that army.
9 すなわち民を集めて見ると、ヤベシ・ギレアデの住民はひとりもそこにいなかった。
(At that time also when they were in Silo, no one of them was found there.)
10 そこで会衆は勇士一万二千人をかしこにつかわし、これに命じて言った、「ヤベシ・ギレアデに行って、その住民を、女、子供もろともつるぎをもって撃て。
So they sent ten thousand of the most valiant men, and commanded them, saying: Go and put the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad to the sword, with their wives and their children.
11 そしてこのようにしなければならない。すなわち男および男と寝た女はことごとく滅ぼさなければならない」。
And this is what you shall observe: Every male, and all women that have known men, you shall kill, but the virgins you shall save.
12 こうして彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの住民のうちで四百人の若い処女を獲た。これはまだ男と寝たことがなく、男を知らない者である。彼らはこれをカナンの地にあるシロの陣営に連れてきた。
And there were found of Jabes Galaad four hundred virgins, that had not known the bed of a man, and they brought them to the camp Silo, into the land of Chanaan.
13 そこで全会衆は人をつかわして、リンモンの岩におるベニヤミンの人々に平和を告げた。
And they sent messengers to the children of Benjamin, that were in the rock Remmon, and commanded them to receive them in peace.
14 ベニヤミンの人々がその時、帰ってきたので、彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの女のうちから生かしておいた女をこれに与えたが、なお足りなかった。
And the children of Benjamin came at that time, and wives were given them of the daughters of Jabes Galaad: but they found no others, whom they might give in like manner.
15 こうして民は、主がイスラエルの部族のうちに欠陥をつくられたことのために、ベニヤミンをあわれんだ。
And all Israel was very sorry, and repented for the destroying of one tribe out of Israel.
16 会衆の長老たちは言った、「ベニヤミンの女が絶えたので、かの残りの者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいでしょうか」。
And the ancients said: What shall we do with the rest, that have not received wives? for all the women in Benjamin are dead.
17 彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルから一つの部族が消えうせないためにベニヤミンのうちの残りの者どもに、あとつぎがなければならない。
And we must use all care, and provide with great diligence, that one tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
18 しかし、われわれの娘を彼らの妻に与えることはできない。イスラエルの人々が『ベニヤミンに妻を与える者はのろわれる』と言って誓ったからである」。
For as to our own daughters we cannot give them, being bound with an oath and a curse, whereby we said: Cursed be he that shall give Benjamin any of his daughters to wife.
19 それで彼らは言った、「年々シロに主の祭がある」。シロはベテルの北にあって、ベテルからシケムにのぼる大路の東、レバナの南にある。
So they took counsel, and said: Behold there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord in Silo, which is situate on the north of the city of Bethel, and on the east side of the way, that goeth from Bethel to Sichem, and on the south of the town of Lebona.
20 そして彼らはベニヤミンの人々に命じて言った、「あなたがたは行って、ぶどう畑に待ち伏せして、
And they commanded the children of Benjamin, and said: Go, and lie hid in the vineyards,
21 うかがいなさい。もしシロの娘たちが踊りを踊りに出てきたならば、ぶどう畑から出て、シロの娘たちのうちから、めいめい自分の妻をとって、ベニヤミンの地に連れて行きなさい。
And when you shall see the daughters of Silo come out, as the custom is, to dance, come ye on a sudden out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife among them, and go into the land of Benjamin.
22 もしその父あるいは兄弟がきて、われわれに訴えるならば、われわれは彼らに、『われわれのために彼らをゆるしてください。戦争のときにわれわれは、彼らおのおのに妻をとってやらなかったし、またあなたがたも彼らに与えなかったからです。もし与えたならば、あなたがたは罪を犯したことになるからでした』と言いましょう」。
And when their fathers and their brethren shall come, and shall begin to complain against you, and to chide, we will say to them: Have pity on them for they took them not away as by the right of war or conquest, but when they asked to have them, you gave them not, and the fault was committed on your part.
23 ベニヤミンの人々はそのように行い、踊っている者どものうちから自分たちの数にしたがって妻を取り、それを連れて領地に帰り、町々を建てなおして、そこに住んだ。
And the children of Benjamin did, as they had been commanded: and according to their number, they carried off for themselves every man his wife of them that were dancing: and they went into their possession and built up their cities, and dwelt in them.
24 こうしてイスラエルの人々は、その時そこを去って、おのおのその部族および氏族に帰った。すなわちそこを立って、おのおのその嗣業の地に帰った。
The children of Israel also returned by their tribes, and families, to their dwellings.
25 そのころ、イスラエルには王がなかったので、おのおの自分の目に正しいと見るところをおこなった。
In those days there was no king in Israel: but every one did that which seemed right to himself.
