士師記 1
1 ヨシュアが死んだ後、イスラエルの人々は主に問うて言った、「わたしたちのうち、だれが先に攻め上って、カナンびとと戦いましょうか」。
It happened after the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of the LORD, saying, "Who should go up first to fight for us against the Canaanites?"
2 主は言われた、「ユダが上るべきである。わたしはこの国を彼の手にわたした」。
The LORD said, "Judah should go up. Look, I have delivered the land into his hand."
3 ユダはその兄弟シメオンに言った、「わたしと一緒に、わたしに割り当てられた領地へ上って行って、カナンびとと戦ってください。そうすればわたしもあなたと一緒に、あなたに割り当てられた領地へ行きましょう」。そこでシメオンは彼と一緒に行った。
Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your lot." So Simeon went with him.
4 ユダが上って行くと、主は彼らの手にカナンびととペリジびととをわたされたので、彼らはベゼクで一万人を撃ち破り、
Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they struck of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
5 またベゼクでアドニベゼクに会い、彼と戦ってカナンびととペリジびととを撃ち破った。
They found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they struck the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 アドニベゼクは逃げたが、彼らはそのあとを追って彼を捕え、その手足の親指を切り放った。
But Adoni-Bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
7 アドニベゼクは言った、「かつて七十人の王たちが手足の親指を切られて、わたしの食卓の下で、くずを拾ったことがあったが、神はわたしがしたように、わたしに報いられたのだ」。人々は彼をエルサレムへ連れて行ったが、彼はそこで死んだ。
Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, scavenged under my table: as I have done, so God has requited me." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8 ユダの人々はエルサレムを攻めて、これを取り、つるぎをもってこれを撃ち、町に火を放った。
The people of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9 その後、ユダの人々は山地とネゲブと平地に住んでいるカナンびとと戦うために下ったが、
Afterward the people of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, and in the Negev, and in the lowland.
10 ユダはまずヘブロンに住んでいるカナンびとを攻めて、セシャイとアヒマンとタルマイを撃ち破った。ヘブロンのもとの名はキリアテ・アルバであった。
And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron, and Hebron came out in opposition (now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba), and they struck Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 またそこから進んでデビルの住民を攻めた。（デビルのもとの名はキリアテ・セペルであった。）
From there he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir before was Kiriath Sepher.)
12 時にカレブは言った、「キリアテ・セペルを撃って、これを取る者には、わたしの娘アクサを妻として与えるであろう」。
Caleb said, "He who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife."
13 カレブの弟ケナズの子オテニエルがそれを取ったので、カレブは娘アクサを妻として彼に与えた。
Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
14 アクサは行くとき彼女の父に畑を求めることを夫にすすめられたので、アクサがろばから降りると、カレブは彼女に言った、「あなたは何を望むのか」。
It happened, when she came to him, that she got him to ask her father for a field. And she got off from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What would you like?"
15 アクサは彼に言った、「わたしに贈り物をください。あなたはわたしをネゲブの地へやられるのですから、泉をもください」。それでカレブは上の泉と下の泉とを彼女に与えた。
She said to him, "Give me a blessing; since you have given me the land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her according to her heart the upper springs and the lower springs.
16 モーセのしゅうとであるケニびとの子孫はユダの人々と共に、しゅろの町からアラドに近いネゲブにあるユダの野に上ってきて、アマレクびとと共に住んだ。
And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the people of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the Negev of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.
17 そしてユダはその兄弟シメオンと共に行って、ゼパテに住んでいたカナンびとを撃ち、それをことごとく滅ぼした。これによってその町の名はホルマと呼ばれた。
Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah.
18 ユダはまたガザとその地域、アシケロンとその地域、エクロンとその地域を取った。
Also Judah took Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory, and Ashdod with its surrounding lands.
19 主がユダと共におられたので、ユダはついに山地を手に入れたが、平地に住んでいた民は鉄の戦車をもっていたので、これを追い出すことができなかった。
The LORD was with Judah; and drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20 人々はモーセがかつて言ったように、ヘブロンをカレブに与えたので、カレブはその所からアナクの三人の子を追い出した。
They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had spoken. And from there he possessed the three cities, and he drove out from there the three sons of Anak.
21 ベニヤミンの人々はエルサレムに住んでいたエブスびとを追い出さなかったので、エブスびとは今日までベニヤミンの人々と共にエルサレムに住んでいる。
The people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22 ヨセフの一族はまたベテルに攻め上ったが、主は彼らと共におられた。
And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.
23 すなわちヨセフの一族は人をやってベテルを探らせた。この町のもとの名はルズであった。
And the house of Joseph sent out spies to Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
24 その斥候たちは町から出てきた人を見て、言った、「どうぞこの町にはいる道を教えてください。そうすればわたしたちはあなたに恵みを施しましょう」。
And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they captured him, and they said to him, "Please show us the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy."
25 彼が町にはいる道を教えたので、彼らはつるぎをもって町を撃った。しかし、かの人とその家族は自由に去らせた。
He showed them the entrance into the city; and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.
26 その人はヘテびとの地に行って町を建て、それをルズと名づけた。これは今日までその名である。
The man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
27 マナセはベテシャンとその村里の住民、タアナクとその村里の住民、ドルとその村里の住民、イブレアムとその村里の住民、メギドとその村里の住民を追い出さなかったので、カナンびとは引き続いてその地に住んでいたが、
Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28 イスラエルは強くなったとき、カナンびとを強制労働に服させ、彼らをことごとくは追い出さなかった。
It happened, when Israel had grown strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and did not utterly drive them out.
29 またエフライムはゲゼルに住んでいたカナンびとを追い出さなかったので、カナンびとはゲゼルにおいて彼らのうちに住んでいた。
Ephraim didn't drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.
30 ゼブルンはキテロンの住民およびナハラルの住民を追い出さなかったので、カナンびとは彼らのうちに住んで強制労働に服した。
Zebulun didn't drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor.
31 アセルはアッコの住民およびシドン、アヘラブ、アクジブ、ヘルバ、アピク、レホブの住民を追い出さなかったので、
Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;
32 アセルびとは、その地の住民であるカナンびとのうちに住んでいた。彼らが追い出さなかったからである。
but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.
33 ナフタリはベテシメシの住民およびベテアナテの住民を追い出さずに、その地の住民であるカナンびとのうちに住んでいた。しかしベテシメシとベテアナテの住民は、ついに彼らの強制労働に服した。
Naphtali didn't drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but he lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became subject to forced labor.
34 アモリびとはダンの人々を山地に追い込んで平地に下ることを許さなかった。
The Amorites forced the people of Dan into the hill country; for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;
35 アモリびとは引き続いてハルヘレス、アヤロン、シャラビムに住んでいたが、ヨセフの一族の手が強くなったので、彼らは強制労働に服した。
but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.
36 アモリびとの境はアクラビムの坂からセラを経て上の方に及んだ。
The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
