ヨシュア記 20
1 そこで主はヨシュアに言われた、
The LORD also spoke to Joshua, saying,
2 「イスラエルの人々に言いなさい、『先にわたしがモーセによって言っておいた、のがれの町を選び定め、
Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint for you cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by the hand of Moses:
3 あやまって、知らずに人を殺した者を、そこへのがれさせなさい。これはあなたがたが、あだを討つ者をさけて、のがれる場所となるでしょう。
That the slayer that killeth [any] person unawares [and] ignorantly, may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.
4 その人は、これらの町の一つにのがれて行って、町の門の入口に立ち、その町の長老たちに、そのわけを述べなければならない。そうすれば、彼らはその人を町に受け入れて、場所を与え、共に住ませるであろう。
And when he that doth flee to one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
5 たとい、あだを討つ者が追ってきても、人を殺したその者を、その手に渡してはならない。彼はあやまって隣人を殺したのであって、もとからそれを憎んでいたのではないからである。
And if the avenger of blood shall pursue him, then they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand; because he smote his neighbor ignorantly, and had not hated him before.
6 その人は、会衆の前に立って、さばきを受けるまで、あるいはその時の大祭司が死ぬまで、その町に住まなければならない。そして後、彼は自分の町、自分の家に帰って行って、逃げ出してきたその町に住むことができる』」。
And he shall dwell in that city, until he shall stand before the congregation for judgment, [and] until the death of the high-priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from whence he fled.
7 そこで、ナフタリの山地にあるガリラヤのケデシ、エフライムの山地にあるシケム、およびユダの山地にあるキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンを、これがために選び分かち、
And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, (which [is] Hebron) in the mountain of Judah.
8 またヨルダンの向こう側、エリコの東の方では、ルベンの部族のうちから、高原の荒野にあるベゼル、ガドの部族のうちから、ギレアデのラモテ、マナセの部族のうちから、バシャンのゴランを選び定めた。
And on the other side of Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.
9 これらは、イスラエルのすべての人々、およびそのうちに寄留する他国人のために設けられた町々であって、すべて、あやまって人を殺した者を、そこにのがれさせ、会衆の前に立たないうちに、あだを討つ者の手にかかって死ぬことのないようにするためである。
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger sojourning among them, that whoever should kill [any] person unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
