ヨブ 記 2
1 ある日、また神の子たちが来て、主の前に立った。サタンもまたその中に来て、主の前に立った。
And it came to pass, when on a certain day the sons of God came, and stood before the Lord, and Satan came among them, and stood in his sight,
2 主はサタンに言われた、「あなたはどこから来たか」。サタンは主に答えて言った、「地を行きめぐり、あちらこちら歩いてきました」。
That the Lord said to Satan: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
3 主はサタンに言われた、「あなたは、わたしのしもべヨブのように全く、かつ正しく、神を恐れ、悪に遠ざかる者の世にないことを気づいたか。あなたは、わたしを勧めて、ゆえなく彼を滅ぼそうとしたが、彼はなお堅く保って、おのれを全うした」。
And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple, and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence? But thou hast moved me against him, that I should afflict him without cause.
4 サタンは主に答えて言った、「皮には皮をもってします。人は自分の命のために、その持っているすべての物をも与えます。
And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin, and all that a man hath he will give for his life:
5 しかしいま、あなたの手を伸べて、彼の骨と肉とを撃ってごらんなさい。彼は必ずあなたの顔に向かって、あなたをのろうでしょう」。
But put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt gee that he will bless thee to thy face.
6 主はサタンに言われた、「見よ、彼はあなたの手にある。ただ彼の命を助けよ」。
And the Lord said to Satan: Behold be is in thy hand, but yet save his life.
7 サタンは主の前から出て行って、ヨブを撃ち、その足の裏から頭の頂まで、いやな腫物をもって彼を悩ました。
So Satan went forth from the presence Of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:
8 ヨブは陶器の破片を取り、それで自分の身をかき、灰の中にすわった。
And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.
9 時にその妻は彼に言った、「あなたはなおも堅く保って、自分を全うするのですか。神をのろって死になさい」。
And his wife said to him: Dost thou still continue in thy simplicity? bless God and die.
10 しかしヨブは彼女に言った、「あなたの語ることは愚かな女の語るのと同じだ。われわれは神から幸をうけるのだから、災をも、うけるべきではないか」。すべてこの事においてヨブはそのくちびるをもって罪を犯さなかった。
And he said to her: Thou hast; spoken like one of the foolish women: if we have received good things at the hand of God, why should we not receive evil? In all these things Job did not sin with his lips.
11 時に、ヨブの三人の友がこのすべての災のヨブに臨んだのを聞いて、めいめい自分の所から尋ねて来た。すなわちテマンびとエリパズ、シュヒびとビルダデ、ナアマびとゾパルである。彼らはヨブをいたわり、慰めようとして、たがいに約束してきたのである。
Now when Job’s three friends heard all the evil that had befallen him, they came every one from his own place, Alphas the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment to come together and visit him, and comfort him.
12 彼らは目をあげて遠方から見たが、彼のヨブであることを認めがたいほどであったので、声をあげて泣き、めいめい自分の上着を裂き、天に向かって、ちりをうちあげ、自分たちの頭の上にまき散らした。
And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out they wept, and rending their garments they sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven.
13 こうして七日七夜、彼と共に地に座していて、ひと言も彼に話しかける者がなかった。彼の苦しみの非常に大きいのを見たからである。
And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.
