エレミヤ書 1
1 ベニヤミンの地アナトテの祭司のひとりである、ヒルキヤの子エレミヤの言葉。
These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests living in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.
2 アモンの子、ユダの王ヨシヤの時、すなわちその治世の十三年に、主の言葉がエレミヤに臨んだ。
The Lord's message came to Jeremiah beginning in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah, son of Amon, king of Judah,
3 その言葉はまたヨシヤの子、ユダの王エホヤキムの時にも臨んで、ヨシヤの子、ユダの王ゼデキヤの十一年の終り、すなわちその年の五月にエルサレムの民が捕え移された時にまで及んだ。
and on through the time of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, up to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah, son of Josiah, king of Judah, which was when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.
4 主の言葉がわたしに臨んで言う、
The Lord came and told me,
5 「わたしはあなたをまだ母の胎につくらないさきに、あなたを知り、あなたがまだ生れないさきに、あなたを聖別し、あなたを立てて万国の預言者とした」。
“I knew exactly who you would be before I created you in your mother's womb; I chose you before you were born to be a prophet to the nations.”
6 その時わたしは言った、「ああ、主なる神よ、わたしはただ若者にすぎず、どのように語ってよいか知りません」。
“Oh no, Lord God!” I replied. “I really don't know how to speak in public because I'm still too young!”
7 しかし主はわたしに言われた、「あなたはただ若者にすぎないと言ってはならない。だれにでも、すべてわたしがつかわす人へ行き、あなたに命じることをみな語らなければならない。
“Don't say you're too young,” the Lord told me. “Go to everyone I send you to. Tell them everything I order you to say.
8 彼らを恐れてはならない、わたしがあなたと共にいて、あなたを救うからである」と主は仰せられる。
Don't be afraid of them because I'll go with you and I'll look after you. This is the Lord's promise.”
9 そして主はみ手を伸べて、わたしの口につけ、主はわたしに言われた、「見よ、わたしの言葉をあなたの口に入れた。
The Lord stretched out his hand, touched my mouth, and told me: “Look, I've put my words in your mouth.
10 見よ、わたしはきょう、あなたを万民の上と、万国の上に立て、あなたに、あるいは抜き、あるいはこわし、あるいは滅ぼし、あるいは倒し、あるいは建て、あるいは植えさせる」。
Today I've placed you over nations and kingdoms to pull up and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.”
11 主の言葉がまたわたしに臨んで言う、「エレミヤよ、あなたは何を見るか」。わたしは答えた、「あめんどうの枝を見ます」。
The Lord's message came to me, asking, “Jeremiah, what can you see?” “I see a twig from an almond tree,” I answered.
12 主はわたしに言われた、「あなたの見たとおりだ。わたしは自分の言葉を行おうとして見張っているのだ」。
“That's right, because I am watching to make sure what I say happens,” the Lord said.
13 主の言葉がふたたびわたしに臨んで言う、「あなたは何を見るか」。わたしは答えた、「煮え立っているなべを見ます。北からこちらに向かっています」。
The Lord's message came to me again, asking, “What can you see?” “I see a pot that's boiling,” I answered, “and it's tipping in this direction from the north.”
14 主はわたしに言われた、「災が北から起って、この地に住むすべての者の上に臨む」。
Then the Lord told me, “Trouble brewing from the north will sweep out over everyone living in the country.
15 主は言われる、「見よ、わたしは北の国々のすべての民を呼ぶ。彼らは来て、エルサレムの門の入口と、周囲のすべての城壁、およびユダのすべての町々に向かって、おのおのその座を設ける。
Watch out! I'm going to summon all the nations and kings of the north,” declares the Lord. “Each of these kings will come and set up their thrones right at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and attack all its fortifications and all the towns in Judah.
16 わたしは、彼らがわたしを捨てて、すべての悪事を行ったゆえに、わたしのさばきを彼らに告げる。彼らは他の神々に香をたき、自分の手で作った物を拝したのである。
I will carry out my sentence against the inhabitants for all their wickedness, because they abandoned me to burn incense to pagan gods, to worship idols they themselves made.
17 しかしあなたは腰に帯して立ち、わたしが命じるすべての事を彼らに告げよ。彼らを恐れてはならない。さもないと、わたしは彼らの前であなたをあわてさせる。
You need to get yourself ready. You are going to stand before the people and tell them everything that I order you to say. Don't be scared by them, or I will scare you in front of them.
18 見よ、わたしはきょう、この全国と、ユダの王と、そのつかさと、その祭司と、その地の民の前に、あなたを堅き城、鉄の柱、青銅の城壁とする。
Look! Today I have made you like a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze to stand against the whole country—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the country.
19 彼らはあなたと戦うが、あなたに勝つことはできない。わたしがあなたと共にいて、あなたを救うからである」と主は言われる。
They will fight against you but they won't defeat you, because I'll be there to rescue you,” declares the Lord.
