エレミヤ書 5
1 エルサレムのちまたを行きめぐり、見て、知るがよい。その広場を尋ねて、公平を行い、真実を求める者が、ひとりでもあるか捜してみよ。あれば、わたしはエルサレムをゆるす。
Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be [any] that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.
2 彼らは、「主は生きておられる」と言うけれども、実は、偽って誓うのだ。
And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.
3 主よ、あなたの目は、真実を顧みられるではありませんか。あなたが彼らを打たれても、痛みを覚えず、彼らを滅ぼされても、懲しめを受けることを拒み、その顔を岩よりも堅くして、悔い改めることを拒みました。
O LORD, [are] not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, [but] they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
4 それで、わたしは言った、「これらはただ貧しい愚かな人々で、主の道と、神のおきてを知りません。
Therefore I said, Surely these [are] poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, [nor] the judgment of their God.
5 わたしは偉い人たちの所へ行って、彼らに語ります。彼らは主の道を知り、神のおきてを知っています」。ところが、彼らも皆おなじように、くびきを折り、なわめを断っていた。
I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, [and] the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, [and] burst the bonds.
6 それゆえ林から、ししが出てきて彼らを殺し、荒野から、おおかみが出てきて彼らを滅ぼす。ひょうは彼らの町々をねらっている。そこから出る者はみな裂かれる。彼らの罪が多く、その背信がはなはだしいからである。
Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, [and] a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, [and] their backslidings are increased.
7 「わたしはどうしてあなたを、ゆるすことができようか。あなたの子どもらは、わたしを捨てさり、神でもないものをさして誓った。わたしが彼らを満ち足らせた時、彼らは姦淫を行い、遊女の家に群れ集まった。
How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by [them that are] no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
8 彼らは肥え太った丈夫な雄馬のように、おのおの、いなないて隣の妻を慕う。
They were [as] fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.
9 わたしはこれらの事のために彼らを罰しないでいられようか。このような国民にあだを返さないであろうか」と主は言われる。
Shall I not visit for these [things]? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 「あなたがたはユダのぶどうの並み木の間を、のぼって行って、滅ぼせ、ただ、ことごとく滅ぼしてはならない。その枝を切り除け、主のものではないからである。
Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they [are] not the LORD’s.
11 イスラエルの家とユダの家とはわたしにまったく不信であった」と主は言われる。
For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.
12 「彼らは主について偽り語って言った、『主は何事もなされない、災はわれわれに来ない、またつるぎや、ききんを見ることはない。
They have belied the LORD, and said, [It is] not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13 預言者らは風となり、彼らのうちに言葉はない。彼らはこのようになる』と」。
And the prophets shall become wind, and the word [is] not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
14 それゆえ万軍の神、主はこう言われる、「彼らがこの言葉を語ったので、見よ、わたしはあなたの口にあるわたしの言葉を火とし、この民をたきぎとする。火は彼らを焼き尽す」。
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 主は言われる、「イスラエルの家よ、見よ、わたしは遠い国の民をあなたがたのところに攻めこさせる。その国は長く続く国、古い国で、あなたがたはその国の言葉を知らず、人々の語るのを悟ることもできない。
Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it [is] a mighty nation, it [is] an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
16 その箙は開いた墓のようであり、彼らはみな勇士である。
Their quiver [is] as an open sepulchre, they [are] all mighty men.
17 彼らはあなたが刈り入れた物と、あなたの糧食とを食い尽し、あなたのむすこ娘を食い尽し、あなたの羊と牛を食い尽し、あなたのぶどうの木といちじくの木を食い尽し、またつるぎをもって、あなたが頼みとする堅固な町々を滅ぼす」。
And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, [which] thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.
18 主は言われる、「しかしその時でも、わたしはことごとくはあなたを滅ぼさない。
Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
19 あなたの民が、『どうしてわれわれの神、主はこれらのすべての事をわれわれになされたのか』と言うならば、あなたは彼らに答えなければならない、『あなたがたがわたしを捨てて、自分の地で異なる神々に仕えたように、あなたがたは自分のものでない地で異邦の人に仕えるようになる』と」。
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these [things] unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land [that is] not yours.
20 これをヤコブの家にのべ、またユダに示して言え、
Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21 「愚かで、悟りもなく、目があっても見えず、耳があっても聞えない民よ、これを聞け。
Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
22 主は言われる、あなたがたはわたしを恐れないのか、わたしの前におののかないのか。わたしは砂を置いて海の境とし、これを永遠の限界として、越えることができないようにした。波はさかまいても、勝つことはできない、鳴りわたっても、これを越えることはできない。
Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand [for] the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
23 ところが、この民には強情な、そむく心があり、彼らはわき道にそれて、去ってしまった。
But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.
24 彼らは『われわれに雨を与え、秋の雨と春の雨を時にしたがって降らせ、われわれのために刈入れの時を定められたわれわれの神、主を恐れよう』とその心のうちに言わないのだ。
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25 あなたがたのとがは、これらの事をしりぞけ、あなたがたの罪は、良い物があなたがたに来るのをさまたげた。
Your iniquities have turned away these [things], and your sins have withholden good [things] from you.
26 わが民のうちには悪い者があって、鳥をとる人のように身をかがめてうかがい、わなを置いて人を捕える。
For among my people are found wicked [men: ] they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 かごに鳥が満ちているように、彼らの家は不義の宝で満ちている。それゆえ、彼らは大いなる者、裕福な者となり、
As a cage is full of birds, so [are] their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.
28 肥えて、つやがあり、その悪しき行いには際限がない。彼らは公正に、みなしごの訴えをさばいて、それを助けようとはせず、また貧しい人の訴えをさばかない。
They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.
29 主は言われる、わたしはこのような事のために、彼らを罰しないであろうか。わたしはこのような民に、あだを返さないであろうか」。
Shall I not visit for these [things]? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 驚くべきこと、恐るべきことがこの地に起っている。
A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;
31 預言者は偽って預言し、祭司は自分の手によって治め、わが民はこのようにすることを愛している。しかしあなたがたはその終りにはどうするつもりか。
The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love [to have it] so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
