創世記 23
1 サラの一生は百二十七年であった。これがサラの生きながらえた年である。
And Sara lived a hundred and twenty-seven years.
2 サラはカナンの地のキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンで死んだ。アブラハムは中にはいってサラのために悲しみ泣いた。
And she died in the city of Arbee which is Hebron, in the land of Chanaan: and Abraham came to mourn and weep for her.
3 アブラハムは死人のそばから立って、ヘテの人々に言った、
And after he rose up from the funeral obsequies, he spoke to the children of Heth, saying:
4 「わたしはあなたがたのうちの旅の者で寄留者ですが、わたしの死人を出して葬るため、あなたがたのうちにわたしの所有として一つの墓地をください」。
I am a stranger and sojourner among you: give me the right of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead.
5 ヘテの人々はアブラハムに答えて言った、
The children of Heth answered, saying:
6 「わが主よ、お聞きなさい。あなたはわれわれのうちにおられて、神のような主君です。われわれの墓地の最も良い所にあなたの死人を葬りなさい。その墓地を拒んで、あなたにその死人を葬らせない者はわれわれのうちには、ひとりもないでしょう」。
My Lord, hear us, thou art a prince of God among us: bury thy dead in our principal sepulchres: and no man shall have power to hinder thee from burying thy dead in his sepulchre.
7 アブラハムは立ちあがり、その地の民ヘテの人々に礼をして、
Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, to wit the children of Heth:
8 彼らに言った、「もしわたしの死人を葬るのに同意されるなら、わたしの願いをいれて、わたしのためにゾハルの子エフロンに頼み、
And said to them: If it please your soul that I should bury my dead, hear me, and intercede for me to Ephron the son of Seor.
9 彼が持っている畑の端のマクペラのほら穴をじゅうぶんな代価でわたしに与え、あなたがたのうちに墓地を持たせてください」。
That he may give me the double cave, which he hath in the end of his field: for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me before you, for a possession of a burying place.
10 時にエフロンはヘテの人々のうちにすわっていた。そこでヘテびとエフロンはヘテの人々、すなわちすべてその町の門にはいる人々の聞いているところで、アブラハムに答えて言った、
Now Ephron dwelt in the midst of the children of Heth. And Ephron made answer to Abraham in the hearing of all that went in at the gate of the city, saying:
11 「いいえ、わが主よ、お聞きなさい。わたしはあの畑をあなたにさしあげます。またその中にあるほら穴もさしあげます。わたしの民の人々の前で、それをさしあげます。あなたの死人を葬りなさい」。
Let it not be so, my lord, but do thou rather hearken to what I say: The field I deliver to thee, and the cave that is therein, in the presence of the children of my people, bury thy dead.
12 アブラハムはその地の民の前で礼をし、
Abraham bowed down before the people of the land,
13 その地の民の聞いているところでエフロンに言った、「あなたがそれを承諾されるなら、お聞きなさい。わたしはその畑の代価を払います。お受け取りください。わたしの死人をそこに葬りましょう」。
And he spoke to Ephron, in the presence of the people: I beseech thee to hear me: I will give money for the field: take it, and so I will bury my dead in it.
14 エフロンはアブラハムに答えて言った、
And Ephron answered:
15 「わが主よ、お聞きなさい。あの地は銀四百シケルですが、これはわたしとあなたの間で、なにほどのことでしょう。あなたの死人を葬りなさい」。
My lord, hear me. The ground which thou desirest, is worth four hundred sicles of silver: this is the price between me and thee: but what is this? bury thy dead.
16 そこでアブラハムはエフロンの言葉にしたがい、エフロンがヘテの人々の聞いているところで言った銀、すなわち商人の通用銀四百シケルを量ってエフロンに与えた。
And when Abraham had heard this, he weighed out the money that Ephron had asked, in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred sicles of silver of common current money.
17 こうしてマムレの前のマクペラにあるエフロンの畑は、畑も、その中のほら穴も、畑の中およびその周囲の境にあるすべての木も皆、
And the field that before was Ephron’s, wherein was the double cave, looking towards Mambre, both it and the cave, and all the trees thereof in all its limits round about,
18 ヘテの人々の前、すなわちその町の門にはいるすべての人々の前で、アブラハムの所有と決まった。
Was made sure to Abraham for a possession, in the sight of the children of Heth, and of all that went in at the gate of his city.
19 その後、アブラハムはその妻サラをカナンの地にあるマムレ、すなわちヘブロンの前のマクペラの畑のほら穴に葬った。
And so Abraham buried Sara his wife, in a double cave of the field, that looked towards Mambre, this is Hebron in the land of Chanaan.
20 このように畑とその中にあるほら穴とはヘテの人々によってアブラハムの所有の墓地と定められた。
And the field was made sure to Abraham, and the cave that was in it, for a possession to bury in, by the children of Heth.
