伝道者の書 9
1 わたしはこのすべての事に心を用いて、このすべての事を明らかにしようとした。すなわち正しい者と賢い者、および彼らのわざが、神の手にあることを明らかにしようとした。愛するか憎むかは人にはわからない。彼らの前にあるすべてのことは空である。
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knows either love or hatred by all that is before them.
2 すべての人に臨むところは、みな同様である。正しい者にも正しくない者にも、善良な者にも悪い者にも、清い者にも汚れた者にも、犠牲をささげる者にも、犠牲をささげない者にも、その臨むところは同様である。善良な人も罪びとも異なることはない。誓いをなす者も、誓いをなすことを恐れる者も異なることはない。
All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifices not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that swears, as he that fears an oath.
3 すべての人に同一に臨むのは、日の下に行われるすべての事のうちの悪事である。また人の心は悪に満ち、その生きている間は、狂気がその心のうちにあり、その後は死者のもとに行くのである。
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
4 すべて生ける者に連なる者には望みがある。生ける犬は、死せるししにまさるからである。
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 生きている者は死ぬべき事を知っている。しかし死者は何事をも知らない、また、もはや報いを受けることもない。その記憶に残る事がらさえも、ついに忘れられる。
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
6 その愛も、憎しみも、ねたみも、すでに消えうせて、彼らはもはや日の下に行われるすべての事に、永久にかかわることがない。
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
7 あなたは行って、喜びをもってあなたのパンを食べ、楽しい心をもってあなたの酒を飲むがよい。神はすでに、あなたのわざをよみせられたからである。
Go your way, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God now accepts your works.
8 あなたの衣を常に白くせよ。あなたの頭に油を絶やすな。
Let your garments be always white; and let your head lack no ointment.
9 日の下で神から賜わったあなたの空なる命の日の間、あなたはその愛する妻と共に楽しく暮すがよい。これはあなたが世にあってうける分、あなたが日の下で労する労苦によって得るものだからである。
Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of the life of your vanity, which he has given you under the sun, all the days of your vanity: for that is your portion in this life, and in your labor which you take under the sun.
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you go. (Sheol h7585)
11 わたしはまた日の下を見たが、必ずしも速い者が競走に勝つのではなく、強い者が戦いに勝つのでもない。また賢い者がパンを得るのでもなく、さとき者が富を得るのでもない。また知識ある者が恵みを得るのでもない。しかし時と災難はすべての人に臨む。
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happens to them all.
12 人はその時を知らない。魚がわざわいの網にかかり、鳥がわなにかかるように、人の子らもわざわいの時が突然彼らに臨む時、それにかかるのである。
For man also knows not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly on them.
13 またわたしは日の下にこのような知恵の例を見た。これはわたしにとって大きな事である。
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great to me:
14 ここに一つの小さい町があって、そこに住む人は少なかったが、大いなる王が攻めて来て、これを囲み、これに向かって大きな雲梯を建てた。
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
15 しかし、町のうちにひとりの貧しい知恵のある人がいて、その知恵をもって町を救った。ところがだれひとり、その貧しい人を記憶する者がなかった。
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
16 そこでわたしは言う、「知恵は力にまさる。しかしかの貧しい人の知恵は軽んぜられ、その言葉は聞かれなかった」。
Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
17 静かに聞かれる知者の言葉は、愚かな者の中のつかさたる者の叫びにまさる。
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that rules among fools.
18 知恵は戦いの武器にまさる。しかし、ひとりの罪びとは多くの良きわざを滅ぼす。
Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroys much good.
