伝道者の書 11

1 あなたのパンを水の上に投げよ、多くの日の後、あなたはそれを得るからである。

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.

2 あなたは一つの分を七つまた八つに分けよ、あなたは、どんな災が地に起るかを知らないからだ。

Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

3 雲がもし雨で満ちるならば、地にそれを注ぐ、また木がもし南か北に倒れるならば、その木は倒れた所に横たわる。

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty [themselves] upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.

4 風を警戒する者は種をまかない、雲を観測する者は刈ることをしない。

He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.

5 あなたは、身ごもった女の胎の中で、どうして霊が骨にはいるかを知らない。そのようにあなたは、すべての事をなされる神のわざを知らない。

As thou knowest not what [is] the way of the spirit, [nor] how the bones [do grow] in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

6 朝のうちに種をまけ、夕まで手を休めてはならない。実るのは、これであるか、あれであるか、あるいは二つともに良いのであるか、あなたは知らないからである。

In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both [shall be] alike good.

7 光は快いものである。目に太陽を見るのは楽しいことである。

Truly the light [is] sweet, and a pleasant [thing it is] for the eyes to behold the sun:

8 人が多くの年、生きながらえ、そのすべてにおいて自分を楽しませても、暗い日の多くあるべきことを忘れてはならない。すべて、きたらんとする事は皆空である。

But if a man live many years, [and] rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh [is] vanity.

9 若い者よ、あなたの若い時に楽しめ。あなたの若い日にあなたの心を喜ばせよ。あなたの心の道に歩み、あなたの目の見るところに歩め。ただし、そのすべての事のために、神はあなたをさばかれることを知れ。

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these [things] God will bring thee into judgment.

10 あなたの心から悩みを去り、あなたのからだから痛みを除け。若い時と盛んな時はともに空だからである。

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth [are] vanity.
