1 この後アンモンの人々の王が死んで、その子ハヌンがこれに代って王となった。

2 そのときダビデは言った、「わたしはナハシの子ハヌンに、その父がわたしに恵みを施したように、恵みを施そう」。そしてダビデは彼を、その父のゆえに慰めようと、しもべをつかわした。ダビデのしもべたちはアンモンの人々の地に行ったが、

3 アンモンの人々のつかさたちはその主君ハヌンに言った、「ダビデが慰める者をあなたのもとにつかわしたのは彼があなたの父を尊ぶためだと思われますか。ダビデがあなたのもとに、しもべたちをつかわしたのは、この町をうかがい、それを探って、滅ぼすためではありませんか」。

4 そこでハヌンはダビデのしもべたちを捕え、おのおの、ひげの半ばをそり落し、その着物を中ほどから断ち切り腰の所までにして、彼らを帰らせた。

5 人々がこれをダビデに告げたので、ダビデは人をつかわして彼らを迎えさせた。その人々はひじょうに恥じたからである。そこで王は言った、「ひげがのびるまでエリコにとどまって、その後、帰りなさい」。

6 アンモンの人々は自分たちがダビデに憎まれていることがわかったので、人をつかわして、ベテ・レホブのスリヤびととゾバのスリヤびととの歩兵二万人およびマアカの王とその一千人、トブの人一万二千人を雇い入れた。

7 ダビデはそれを聞いて、ヨアブと勇士の全軍をつかわしたので、

8 アンモンの人々は出て、門の入口に戦いの備えをした。ゾバとレホブとのスリヤびと、およびトブとマアカの人々は別に野にいた。

9 ヨアブは戦いが前後から自分に迫ってくるのを見て、イスラエルのえり抜きの兵士のうちから選んで、これをスリヤびとに対して備え、

10 そのほかの民を自分の兄弟アビシャイの手にわたして、アンモンの人々に対して備えさせ、

11 そして言った、「もしスリヤびとがわたしに手ごわいときは、わたしを助けてください。もしアンモンの人々があなたに手ごわいときは、行ってあなたを助けましょう。

12 勇ましくしてください。われわれの民のため、われわれの神の町々のため、勇ましくしましょう。どうぞ主が良いと思われることをされるように」。

13 ヨアブが自分と一緒にいる民と共に、スリヤびとに向かって戦おうとして近づいたとき、スリヤびとは彼の前から逃げた。

14 アンモンの人々はスリヤびとが逃げるのを見て、彼らもまたアビシャイの前から逃げて町にはいった。そこでヨアブはアンモンの人々を撃つことをやめてエルサレムに帰った。

15 しかしスリヤびとは自分たちのイスラエルに打ち敗られたのを見て、共に集まった。

16 そしてハダデゼルは人をつかわし、ユフラテ川の向こう側にいるスリヤびとを率いてヘラムにこさせた。ハダデゼルの軍の長ショバクがこれを率いた。

17 この事がダビデに聞えたので、彼はイスラエルをことごとく集め、ヨルダンを渡ってヘラムにきた。スリヤびとはダビデに向かって備えをして彼と戦った。

18 しかしスリヤびとがイスラエルの前から逃げたので、ダビデはスリヤびとの戦車の兵七百、騎兵四万を殺し、またその軍の長ショバクを撃ったので、彼はその所で死んだ。

19 ハダデゼルの家来であった王たちはみな、自分たちがイスラエルに打ち敗られたのを見て、イスラエルと和を講じ、これに仕えた。こうしてスリヤびとは恐れて再びアンモンの人々を助けることをしなかった。
