テサロニケ人への手紙第一 3
1 そこで、わたしたちはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、わたしたちだけがアテネに留まることに定め、
Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone;
2 わたしたちの兄弟で、キリストの福音における神の同労者テモテをつかわした。それは、あなたがたの信仰を強め、
and sent Timothy, our brother and God’s minister in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort [you] concerning your faith;
3 このような患難の中にあって、動揺する者がひとりもないように励ますためであった。あなたがたの知っているとおり、わたしたちは患難に会うように定められているのである。
that no man be moved by these afflictions; for yourselves know that hereunto we are appointed.
4 そして、あなたがたの所にいたとき、わたしたちがやがて患難に会うことをあらかじめ言っておいたが、あなたがたの知っているように、今そのとおりになったのである。
For verily, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
5 そこで、わたしはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、もしや「試みる者」があなたがたを試み、そのためにわたしたちの労苦がむだになりはしないかと気づかって、あなたがたの信仰を知るために、彼をつかわしたのである。
For this cause I also, when I could no longer forbear, sent that I might know your faith, lest by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labour should be in vain.
6 ところが今テモテが、あなたがたの所からわたしたちのもとに帰ってきて、あなたがたの信仰と愛とについて知らせ、また、あなたがたがいつもわたしたちのことを覚え、わたしたちがあなたがたに会いたく思っていると同じように、わたしたちにしきりに会いたがっているという吉報をもたらした。
But when Timothy came even now unto us from you, and brought us glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, longing to see us, even as we also [to see] you;
7 兄弟たちよ。それによって、わたしたちはあらゆる苦難と患難との中にありながら、あなたがたの信仰によって慰められた。
for this cause, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith:
8 なぜなら、あなたがたが主にあって堅く立ってくれるなら、わたしたちはいま生きることになるからである。
for now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.
9 ほんとうに、わたしたちの神のみまえで、あなたがたのことで喜ぶ大きな喜びのために、どんな感謝を神にささげたらよいだろうか。
For what thanksgiving can we render again unto God for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
10 わたしたちは、あなたがたの顔を見、あなたがたの信仰の足りないところを補いたいと、日夜しきりに願っているのである。
night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
11 どうか、わたしたちの父なる神ご自身と、わたしたちの主イエスとが、あなたがたのところへ行く道を、わたしたちに開いて下さるように。
Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way unto you:
12 どうか、主が、あなたがた相互の愛とすべての人に対する愛とを、わたしたちがあなたがたを愛する愛と同じように、増し加えて豊かにして下さるように。
and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also [do] toward you;
13 そして、どうか、わたしたちの主イエスが、そのすべての聖なる者と共にこられる時、神のみまえに、あなたがたの心を強め、清く、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。
to the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
