サムエル記Ⅰ 31
1 さてペリシテびとはイスラエルと戦った。イスラエルの人々はペリシテびとの前から逃げ、多くの者は傷ついてギルボア山にたおれた。
Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
2 ペリシテびとはサウルとその子らに攻め寄り、そしてペリシテびとはサウルの子ヨナタン、アビナダブ、およびマルキシュアを殺した。
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.
3 戦いは激しくサウルに迫り、弓を射る者どもがサウルを見つけて、彼を射たので、サウルは射る者たちにひどい傷を負わされた。
And the battle went sore against Saul, an the archers overtook him; and he was in great anguish by reason of the archers.
4 そこでサウルはその武器を執る者に言った、「つるぎを抜き、それをもってわたしを刺せ。さもないと、これらの無割礼の者どもがきて、わたしを刺し、わたしをなぶり殺しにするであろう」。しかしその武器を執る者は、ひじょうに恐れて、それに応じなかったので、サウルは、つるぎを執って、その上に伏した。
Then said Saul to his armour-bearer: 'Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and make a mock of me.' But his armour-bearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
5 武器を執る者はサウルが死んだのを見て、自分もまたつるぎの上に伏して、彼と共に死んだ。
And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died with him.
6 こうしてサウルとその三人の子たち、およびサウルの武器を執る者、ならびにその従者たちは皆、この日共に死んだ。
So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armour-bearer, and all his men, that same day together.
7 イスラエルの人々で、谷の向こう側、およびヨルダンの向こう側にいる者が、イスラエルの人々の逃げるのを見、またサウルとその子たちの死んだのを見て町々を捨てて逃げたので、ペリシテびとはきてその中に住んだ。
And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 あくる日、ペリシテびとは殺された者から、はぎ取るためにきたが、サウルとその三人の子たちがギルボア山にたおれているのを見つけた。
And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
9 彼らはサウルの首を切り、そのよろいをはぎ取り、ペリシテびとの全地に人をつかわして、この良い知らせを、その偶像と民とに伝えさせた。
And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to carry the tidings unto the house of their idols, and to the people.
10 また彼らは、そのよろいをアシタロテの神殿に置き、彼のからだをベテシャンの城壁にくぎづけにした。
And they put his armour in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
11 ヤベシ・ギレアデの住民たちは、ペリシテびとがサウルにした事を聞いて、
And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul,
12 勇士たちはみな立ち、夜もすがら行って、サウルのからだと、その子たちのからだをベテシャンの城壁から取りおろし、ヤベシにきて、これをそこで焼き、
all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan; and they came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.
13 その骨を取って、ヤベシのぎょりゅうの木の下に葬り、七日の間、断食した。
And they took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk-tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
