列王記Ⅰ 18
1 多くの日を経て、三年目に主の言葉がエリヤに臨んだ、「行って、あなたの身をアハブに示しなさい。わたしは雨を地に降らせる」。
And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
2 エリヤはその身をアハブに示そうとして行った。その時、サマリヤにききんが激しかった。
And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. And there was a grievous famine in Samaria.
3 アハブは家づかさオバデヤを召した。（オバデヤは深く主を恐れる人で、
And Ahab called Obadiah, who was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:
4 イゼベルが主の預言者を断ち滅ぼした時、オバデヤは百人の預言者を救い出して五十人ずつほら穴に隠し、パンと水をもって彼らを養った）。
For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
5 アハブはオバデヤに言った、「国中のすべての水の源と、すべての川に行ってみるがよい。馬と騾馬を生かしておくための草があるかもしれない。そうすれば、われわれは家畜をいくぶんでも失わずにすむであろう」。
And Ahab said to Obadiah, Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all brooks: perhaps we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
6 彼らは行き巡る地をふたりで分け、アハブはひとりでこの道を行き、オバデヤはひとりで他の道を行った。
So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 オバデヤが道を進んでいた時、エリヤが彼に会った。彼はエリヤを認めて伏して言った、「わが主エリヤよ、あなたはここにおられるのですか」。
And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?
8 エリヤは彼に言った、「そうです。行って、あなたの主人に、エリヤはここにいると告げなさい」。
And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
9 彼は言った、「わたしにどんな罪があって、あなたはしもべをアハブの手にわたして殺そうとされるのですか。
And he said, How have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?
10 あなたの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの主人があなたを尋ねるために、人をつかわさない民はなく、国もありません。そしてエリヤはいないと言う時は、その国、その民に、あなたが見つからないという誓いをさせるのです。
As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation nor kingdom, where my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
11 あなたは今『行って、エリヤはここにいると主人に告げよ』と言われます。
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.
12 しかしわたしがあなたを離れて行くと、主の霊はあなたを、わたしの知らない所へ連れて行くでしょう。わたしが行ってアハブに告げ、彼があなたを見つけることができなければ、彼はわたしを殺すでしょう。しかし、しもべは幼い時から主を恐れている者です。
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I have gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee where I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.
13 イゼベルが主の預言者を殺した時に、わたしがした事、すなわち、わたしが主の預言者のうち百人を五十人ずつほら穴に隠して、パンと水をもって養った事を、わが主は聞かれませんでしたか。
Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
14 ところが今あなたは『行って、エリヤはここにいると主人に告げよ』と言われます。そのようなことをすれば彼はわたしを殺すでしょう」。
And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.
15 エリヤは言った、「わたしの仕える万軍の主は生きておられる。わたしは必ず、きょう、わたしの身を彼に示すであろう」。
And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him to day.
16 オバデヤは行ってアハブに会い、彼に告げたので、アハブはエリヤに会おうとして行った。
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 アハブはエリヤを見たとき、彼に言った、「イスラエルを悩ます者よ、あなたはここにいるのですか」。
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
18 彼は答えた、「わたしがイスラエルを悩ますのではありません。あなたと、あなたの父の家が悩ましたのです。あなたがたが主の命令を捨て、バアルに従ったためです。
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.
19 それで今、人をつかわしてイスラエルのすべての人およびバアルの預言者四百五十人、ならびにアシラの預言者四百人、イゼベルの食卓で食事する者たちをカルメル山に集めて、わたしの所にこさせなさい」。
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, who eat at Jezebel’s table.
20 そこでアハブはイスラエルのすべての人に人をつかわして、預言者たちをカルメル山に集めた。
So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to mount Carmel.
21 そのときエリヤはすべての民に近づいて言った、「あなたがたはいつまで二つのものの間に迷っているのですか。主が神ならばそれに従いなさい。しかしバアルが神ならば、それに従いなさい」。民はひと言も彼に答えなかった。
And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD is God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
22 エリヤは民に言った、「わたしはただひとり残った主の預言者です。しかしバアルの預言者は四百五十人あります。
Then said Elijah to the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
23 われわれに二頭の牛をください。そして一頭の牛を彼らに選ばせ、それを切り裂いて、たきぎの上に載せ、それに火をつけずにおかせなさい。わたしも一頭の牛を整え、それをたきぎの上に載せて火をつけずにおきましょう。
Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
24 こうしてあなたがたはあなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。わたしは主の名を呼びましょう。そして火をもって答える神を神としましょう」。民は皆答えて「それがよかろう」と言った。
And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
25 そこでエリヤはバアルの預言者たちに言った、「あなたがたは大ぜいだから初めに一頭の牛を選んで、それを整え、あなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。ただし火をつけてはなりません」。
And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose one bull for yourselves, and prepare it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
26 彼らは与えられた牛を取って整え、朝から昼までバアルの名を呼んで「バアルよ、答えてください」と言った。しかしなんの声もなく、また答える者もなかったので、彼らは自分たちの造った祭壇のまわりに踊った。
And they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
27 昼になってエリヤは彼らをあざけって言った、「彼は神だから、大声をあげて呼びなさい。彼は考えにふけっているのか、よそへ行ったのか、旅に出たのか、または眠っていて起されなければならないのか」。
And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleepeth, and must be awakened.
28 そこで彼らは大声に呼ばわり、彼らのならわしに従って、刀とやりで身を傷つけ、血をその身に流すに至った。
And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
29 こうして昼が過ぎても彼らはなお叫び続けて、夕の供え物をささげる時にまで及んだ。しかしなんの声もなく、答える者もなく、また顧みる者もなかった。
And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
30 その時エリヤはすべての民にむかって「わたしに近寄りなさい」と言ったので、民は皆彼に近寄った。彼はこわれている主の祭壇を繕った。
And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.
31 そしてエリヤは昔、主の言葉がヤコブに臨んで、「イスラエルをあなたの名とせよ」と言われたヤコブの子らの部族の数にしたがって十二の石を取り、
And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
32 その石で主の名によって祭壇を築き、祭壇の周囲に種二セヤをいれるほどの大きさの、みぞを作った。
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
33 また、たきぎを並べ、牛を切り裂いてたきぎの上に載せて言った、「四つのかめに水を満たし、それを燔祭とたきぎの上に注げ」。
And he put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
34 また言った、「それを二度せよ」。二度それをすると、また言った、「三度それをせよ」。三度それをした。
And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
35 水は祭壇の周囲に流れた。またみぞにも水を満たした。
And the water ran around the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
36 夕の供え物をささげる時になって、預言者エリヤは近寄って言った、「アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神、主よ、イスラエルでは、あなたが神であること、わたしがあなたのしもべであって、あなたの言葉に従ってこのすべての事を行ったことを、今日知らせてください。
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
37 主よ、わたしに答えてください、わたしに答えてください。主よ、この民にあなたが神であること、またあなたが彼らの心を翻されたのであることを知らせてください」。
Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
38 そのとき主の火が下って燔祭と、たきぎと、石と、ちりとを焼きつくし、またみぞの水をなめつくした。
Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 民は皆見て、ひれ伏して言った、「主が神である。主が神である」。
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
40 エリヤは彼らに言った、「バアルの預言者を捕えよ。そのひとりも逃がしてはならない」。そこで彼らを捕えたので、エリヤは彼らをキション川に連れくだって、そこで彼らを殺した。
And Elijah said to them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
41 エリヤはアハブに言った、「大雨の音がするから、上って行って、食い飲みしなさい」。
And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.
42 アハブは食い飲みするために上っていった。しかしエリヤはカルメルの頂に登り、地に伏して顔をひざの間に入れていたが、
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
43 彼はしもべに言った、「上っていって海の方を見なさい」。彼は上っていって、見て、「何もありません」と言ったので、エリヤは「もう一度行きなさい」と言って七度に及んだ。
And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
44 七度目にしもべは言った、「海から人の手ほどの小さな雲が起っています」。エリヤは言った、「上っていって、『雨にとどめられないように車を整えて下れ』とアハブに言いなさい」。
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say to Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and go down, that the rain may not hinder thee.
45 すると間もなく、雲と風が起り、空が黒くなって大雨が降ってきた。アハブは車に乗ってエズレルへ行った。
And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
46 また主の手がエリヤに臨んだので、彼は腰をからげ、エズレルの入口までアハブの前に走っていった。
And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
