マタイの福音書 2
1 イエスはヘロデ王の時、ユダヤのベツレヘムに生れ給ひしが、視よ、東の博士たちエルサレムに來りて言ふ、
Now when Jesus had been born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king, lo! there came magians from the East to Jerusalem,
2 『ユダヤ人の王とて生れ給へる者は、何處に在すか。我ら東にてその星を見たれば、拜せんために來れり』
saying, Where is the king of the Jews that hath been born? for we saw his star in the East, and came to do him homage.
3 ヘロデ王これを聞きて惱みまどふ、エルサレムも皆 然り。
But when Herod the king heard of these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
4 王、民の祭司長・學者らを皆あつめて、キリストの何處に生るべきを問ひ質す。
and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5 かれら言ふ『ユダヤのベツレヘムなり。それは預言者によりて、
And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judaea; for thus it is written by the prophet:
6 「ユダの地ベツレヘムよ、汝はユダの長たちの中にて最 小き者にあらず、汝の中より一人の君いでて、わが民イスラエルを牧せん」と録されたるなり』
“And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, art by no means least among the princes of Judah; for out of thee shall come a ruler, who shall feed my people Israel.”
7 ここにヘロデ密に博士たちを招きて、星の現れし時を詳細にし、
Then Herod, having privately called the magians ascertained from them exactly the time when the star appeared.
8 彼らをベツレヘムに遣さんとして言ふ『往きて幼兒のことを細にたづね、之にあはば我に告げよ。我も往きて拜せん』
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search carefully for the child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may go and do him homage.
9 彼ら王の言をききて往きしに、視よ、前に東にて見し星、先だちゆきて、幼兒の在すところの上に止る。
When they had heard the king, they departed. And lo! the star, which they had seen in the East, went before them, till it came and stood over where the child was.
10 かれら星を見て、歡喜に溢れつつ、
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy;
11 家に入りて、幼兒のその母マリヤと偕に在すを見、平伏して拜し、かつ寶の匣をあけて、黄金・乳香・沒藥など禮物を献げたり。
and when they had come into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and did homage to him; and opening their treasures, they presented him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12 かくて夢にてヘロデの許に返るなとの御告を蒙り、ほかの路より己が國に去りゆきぬ。
And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
13 その去り往きしのち、視よ、主の使、夢にてヨセフに現れていふ『起きて、幼兒とその母とを携へ、エジプトに逃れ、わが告ぐるまで彼處に留れ。ヘロデ幼兒を索めて亡さんとするなり』
And when they had gone, lo! an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I speak to thee; for Herod will seek the child, to destroy him.
14 ヨセフ起きて、夜の間に幼兒とその母とを携へて、エジプトに去りゆき、
And he arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt;
15 ヘロデの死ぬるまで彼處に留りぬ。これ主が預言者によりて『我エジプトより我が子を呼び出せり』と云ひ給ひし言の成就せん爲なり。
and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “I called my son out of Egypt.”
16 ここにヘロデ、博士たちに賺されたりと悟りて、甚だしく憤ほり、人を遣し、博士たちに由りて詳細にせし時を計り、ベツレヘム及び凡てその邊の地方なる、二 歳 以下の男の兒をことごとく殺せり。
Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the magians, was greatly enraged; and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the magians.
17 ここに預言者エレミヤによりて云はれたる言は成就したり。曰く、
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18 『聲ラマにありて聞ゆ、慟哭なり、いとどしき悲哀なり。ラケル己が子らを歎き、子 等のなき故に慰めらるるを厭ふ』
“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping, and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they were no more.”
19 ヘロデ死にてのち、視よ、主の使、夢にてエジプトなるヨセフに現れて言ふ、
But when Herod was dead, lo! an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 『起きて、幼兒とその母とを携へ、イスラエルの地にゆけ。幼兒の生命を索めし者どもは死にたり』
saying, Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel; for they who sought the child's life are dead.
21 ヨセフ起きて、幼兒とその母とを携へ、イスラエルの地に到りしに、
And he arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 アケラオその父ヘロデに代りてユダヤを治むと聞き、彼處に往くことを恐る。また夢にて御告を蒙り、ガリラヤの地方に退き、
But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; and being warned by God in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,
23 ナザレといふ町に到りて住みたり。これは預言者たちに由りて、『彼はナザレ人と呼ばれん』と云はれたる言の成就せん爲なり。
and came and took up his abode in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, “He will be called a Nazarene,”
